The next morning, they met up with the boys on the beach and had breakfast with them as usual. After returning to Tilly’s, the girls went up to her bedroom and switched on her iPad to do some research into contraception. They were disappointed to find out that it would be difficult for under-16s to get contraception, apart from condoms, without a parent.
“We’ll just have to ask them then” Mia said, resignedly. “Do you think your mum will let you?”
“Dunno” Tilly replied. “And it’s going to be so embarrassing asking!”
“Just make sure your dad’s not around when you do!” Mia said, giggling at the thought.
Next they decided to research what type of contraception they should get. Sex Ed at school had covered the different types briefly, but the embarrassed teacher had quickly shut down any discussion about which type would be best.
“It looks like the pill isn’t a good idea as it would be too easy to forget to take one” Tilly said. “Although it would be useful to be able to delay your period for parties.”
“And a patch under the skin might show in the showers after sports” Mia pointed out. “That would be so embarrassing if the soccer team found out and then spread it round the school!”
“It looks like you have to repeat injections, if you opted for those, every three months which would be a bind and I hate injections” Tilly said.
“I guess that leaves IUDs then, but the thought of something up there sounds uncomfortable.”
“It says here that you don’t normally notice it after a couple of days.”
“IUDs it is then!” Mia concluded.
“All we need now is to get our mums to agree!” Tilly sighed.
It was Thursday before Mia had summoned up enough courage and found an opportunity to talk to her mum alone. Her dad had gone into the study to prepare a lecture and she was helping her mum clear up after dinner.
Mia cleared her throat with a little cough. “Mum, can we talk?”
“Of course dear, let me just put this last pan in the dishwasher and set it going.”
Mia followed her into the lounge and they sat down opposite each other with Mia staring at the coffee table between them.
“What would you like to talk about, Mia?” Jules said with a warm, smiley face.
“Well, you know I’ve got a new boyfriend, well my first actually”

“Really well!” Mia replied, hardly able to control her enthusiasm. “He’s really nice to me and we’re getting really close.”

Mia chuckled “Sorry! We’re getting on amazingly well, he’s so nice to me and we’re becoming super close. Actually, it was originally two sentences!”
Jules chuckled. “I’m very pleased for you, now how can I help?”
Knowing that her mum would appreciate it, Mia decided to be direct. “You might think I’m too young, but I’m falling in love with Brett and things are progressing quite fast so I think we will be having sex soon.”
Jules gave her a big smile “Well, you are quite young, but I never understood why girls’ bodies are prepared for sex around your age and society expects you to wait until you’re at least 18 or even until you’re married before you have sex. I was only a bit older than you for my first time. I was browsing the internet the other day and it seems that almost 20 percent of girls lose their virginities at age 14 or earlier and most have sex for the first time at or before age 16. But, of course, there are risks.”
“Which is why I need your help. I don’t want to use a condom for my first time and, anyway they’re not really reliable. But it seems that it’s difficult to get anything better without a parent’s help.”
“If things are progressing that fast, I think it’s a good idea to get on the pill or something. You still need to use condoms to be safe, unless you really trust him, but even then you should get him to have an STI test.”
Mia was visibly relieved and rushed over to hug her mum with a big smile. “Thank you so much for understanding, Mum! I love you so much!”
“I love you too, which is why I want you to enjoy sex and minimise the risks. Just one thing though, having sex can be very emotional and I want you to come and talk to me if you get upset about anything. Of course, you can tell me about how amazing sex is too!”
“I will!” Mia replied.
“So, as you’re under 16, I have to go to the clinic with you. Would you like me to make an appointment next week? Thursday might be best as I don’t have any lectures or tutorials in the afternoon.”
“I was hoping you would come anyway and I don’t have anything on after school on Thursdays.”
“OK. Now have you thought about what type of contraception?”
“Me and Tilly did some research and we decided an IUD would probably be best. What do you think?”
“I agree, it’s what I use.”
“Thanks for being so cool, Mum!” Mia said.
“Why don’t you invite Brett, Tilly and her boyfriend over for a barbie on Friday. I’ll invite Claire and James so we can all get to know the boys a bit better?”
“OK. I’ll ask them” Mia replied, hoping that the boys would not freak out.
Mia went to her room to let Tilly know the news...
Once Tilly answered her phone, Mia exclaimed “Mum was so cool about it! She’s going to make an appointment at the clinic for Thursday after school!”
“That’s a relief. I haven’t found the right time to ask mine as Dad always seems to be around, but now that I can say your mum agreed, I can’t imagine she’ll say no. I’ll do it now as Dad is glued to cricket on the TV.”
Ten minutes later Tilly phoned back. “Mum agreed! And she’s about to phone yours to ask her to pick me up from school too and then meet us at the clinic.”
“Mum wants us to invite the boys for a barbie on Friday with your parents too” Mia explained. “Do you think the boys will freak out?”
“Nah. They’ve both got enough balls to cope with a parental inspection!”
Jules met the girls outside school on the Thursday and drove the excited pair to the clinic. Tilly’s mum, Claire had managed to get an appointment immediately after Mia’s and she met them at the clinic. After a short wait, Mia and Jules were called into the doctor’s room.
“Hello Mia and Mrs Davison. Please sit down and tell me how I can help you.”
Mia’s mum looked at her and nodded slightly to indicate that Mia should reply.
“Hello Dr Findley. I would like to have an IUD fitted, if you think that would be OK.”
Dr Findley smiled. “Most girls just ask for the pill, but you’ve obviously been doing some research.”
“I have, and then Mum told me she had an IUD.”
“Excellent! I think it’s the best choice but I need to do a quick examination first then a pregnancy test. I’d suggest an STI test too, even if you haven’t had intercourse yet.”
“OK” Mia replied with a grin.
The examination was quick, if a little undignified and taking the sample of blood for the test was not too bad.
“All done” pronounced the doctor. “Her’s your prescription for the IUD and make another appointment next week for me to fit it.”
“Thank you, doctor!” Mia and her mum both said as they were leaving.
Mia came out of the doctor’s room with a big smile and waving her prescription, Tilly and her mum were called in. After a smiling Tilly returned to the waiting area waving her own prescription, they made appointments for the following Thursday to have the IUDs fitted and then they all went back to Mia’s for a coffee, or in the girls’ case juice.
Sitting in the lounge with their drinks, Claire said “So you girls will be all set for the party next weekend!”
“It’s good to know we’ll be safe if we get carried away, but we really want to be on our own for our first time.”
“Good idea” Jules said, “and you should really spend the whole night together, especially for your first time.”
Both girls’ faces lit up at the thought of spending the whole night with their boyfriends and they looked at each other with big grins
“We’re going to James and Alisons the weekend after for a catch-up, so both houses will be free on the Saturday night” Jules suggested.
“You’re so good to us, Mum!” Mia exclaimed.
“Well, your first time is important”
“How was your first time, Mum?” Tilly asked.
