After breakfast Jason went to his office to check up on any system or cluster-wide news as well as any personal messages. He realized he had not much to do so he explored the office, which was clean as well as mostly empty of documents and books. He had more fun exploring the House Taurus computer network and data storage which also contained some archives dating back over five hundred years. Not much of the old historic archives were of interest since it contained mostly day to day events.
Jason knew that when the first settlers arrived in the vicinity of the Pleiades Prime system over one thousand three hundred years earlier, they arrived in a hollowed-out asteroid with complete factories and garden cavities as well as the entire knowledge base of the planet of their origin.
That ship became the model on which the current Pleiades Prime habitat was built, with the original ship now a museum attached to the PP habitat. Even at that time they had computers and lasers. There were even some medicines which the settlers have not yet managed to reproduce, even if they managed to develop much more advanced medical scanning equipment thanks to one of the mystery crystals.
In all the time since then, they had not yet managed, or even attempted, to redesign the computers that arrived with the colonists. They have been able to reproduce them and even make them more reliable and secure but they still used the original design.
“Are you busy?” Clarissa asked when she walked into his office. Jason was slouched on the couch in front of his desk as he looked at some of the imperial law topics being taught by most of the universities in the cluster.
“For you, never too busy to drop everything and give you my undivided attention,” Jason responded as he waved at her to sit down next to him.
“I have formally appointed Simon Dempsey as butler for House Taurus,” Clarissa said. “He used to be the assistant butler but since we only have need for one butler at the moment, he will be just the butler. If we need more butlers then he will become the senior butler. I also appointed Loretta as kitchen manager, and her friend Greta as cook. Greta’s daughter, Sana, is the kitchen helper. Simon’s four grandsons have been hired as general servants, responsible for cleaning outside, specifically the gardens and pool. They are obedient and hard-working but they need a supervisor. Simon will supervise them for now but he cannot be watching over them and his own post at the same time.”
“All of that sounds great so far,” Jason said.
“The next point is a bit awkward,” Clarissa said. “We need a housekeeper, usually a woman who can think for herself and can manage a bunch of female housekeeping servants. Mom offered to fill that position, until I can find a replacement.”
“Awkward in which way?” Jason asked.
“Mom was used to being the lady of the house, well sort of the lady of the house,” Clarissa explained. “The position of housekeeper is that of a senior servant, not Viscount’s widow.”
“I see your point but if she offered, then I will allow her to do it, provided she just supervises,” Jason said as Sylvia and Lisa came walking into his office.
“People should not just be allowed to walk into your office like this,” Sylvia said as she calmly sat down on Jason’s lap and kissed him. Lisa walked around the desk and sat in Jason’s chair behind his desk.
“That is because Tracy, who is supposed to be Jason’s receptionist, is busy cleaning up on the second floor,” Clarissa said.
“Sorry, I just decided to grab all the servant girls to get this place in a livable condition,” Sylvia said.
“So, you want to play the role of Housekeeper, Bed Warmer for the Head of the House, formal Hostess to House Taurus, and Baby-maker, all in one?” Jason said as he placed his hand on Sylvia’s flat stomach. Sylvia smiled at him as she fluttered her eyelids at him.
“Bed Warmer sounds nice,” she said. “We need somebody who knows how to manage a house. Until Clarissa finds somebody, I will just step up and do it. No big deal. Are you sure you want me as your formal hostess? It might be a bit awkward.”
“Similar to knowing how to run a large household like this, you are the one with the most experience,” Jason said. “Clarissa would be my first choice to be the formal hostess, until I am ordered to marry somebody, at which time it will be the job of the new countess.”
“You are correct, Mom should be the interim hostess,” Clarissa said quickly.
“My mom tried to train me to be a hostess but I ended up being more interested in joining the marines,” Lisa commented.
“Don’t worry, I will train both of you,” Sylvia said. “I have been training you since your first offer of marriage to the son of Duke Sheffield of Buford. I still can’t believe Lavender ended up with him.”
“I’m very glad I didn’t end up being his wife, once I found out he is abusive,” Clarissa said.
“I took the liberty of having the container with the bulk of our luggage sent here,” Lisa said. “We also need to plan to return to the imperial palace soon. You already have some requests to meet with some of the local viscounts and barons”
“Viscounts I can understand but why the barons?” Clarissa asked.
“The two who asked to see Jason stated it was because they want to do business with House Taurus,” Lisa explained. “I also expect the emperor to return at any moment, at which time it would be best if you are residing in the palace. The return of the emperor with Lady Olivia at his side will instantly result in a lot of formal events where your presence will be required.”
“I think you should go and take your concubines and Chief of Staff with you,” Sylvia said. “I will be here with most of your servants and the children, getting your house ready for when you return.”
“We will all go, including you, when there is a formal dinner or a ball,” Jason said as he stroked over her lower back. She arched her back and looked decidedly content. It nearly looked as if she was going to start purring like a cat at any moment. “Is there anything happening there right now that requires my attention?”
“Just the two barons who heard House Taurus has been reactivated and requested a meeting with the new earl of House Taurus,” Lisa said. “They proposed to meet with you in your office in the imperial palace at your earliest convenience.”
“Clarissa, get Maggie and Major Emerson,” Jason said as he lifted Sylvia off his lap. She pouted at him but stood and moved out of his way. “Lisa, Greg, you and Maggie will go with me. Let’s hear what these two barons want.”
“For how long do we get to keep this thing?” Jason asked as he and his much-reduced entourage approached the shuttle. The two marines were at their posts in front and at the rear of the craft while the two female pilots were lounging next to the open side door.
“It has been permanently assigned to the Special Imperial Envoy, my lord,” Emerson said. “They will assign more marines and pilots as well as a support crew, as soon as reality catches up with everybody.”
“It seems like a bit of overkill to use this thing to commute to Imperial City and back every day,” Jason commented. “Why not just use the rail system?”
“We have not tested the rail shuttles yet so let’s take the shuttle for now,” Lisa suggested.
“I agree,” Sam and Elena said at the same time.
The trip with the shuttle was over before Jason had time to admire the view. This time only the duty officer and a squad of on-duty marines came out and formed up while the shuttle landed. Since the marines, their sergeant, and the officer, a fellow Imperial Marine Corps lieutenant, made the effort of forming up to welcome him, he thanked the marines and took note of the officer’s name for later use. Then he was escorted to his suite.
The two barons were in the city and so eager to meet with Jason that they offered to come to him within the hour. The group who arrived at the palace consisted of the two barons, their heirs, and their business managers.
The group looked confused on meeting Jason’s group, both because of his age and because his chief financial officer was a woman. It turned out they wanted Taurus investments badly enough to overlook the cause of their confusion.
The two barons were the owners of a factory on the Ashland continent that supplied mechanical components which were used in the assembly of other parts. Jason discovered that he was the owner of the factory that bought most of the components made by the two barons’ factory.
Since neither Jason nor Maggie had any knowledge of the factories owned by Jason, they were at a bit of a loss about how to respond, but then Maggie started asking questions which resulted in some more detailed explanations.
Jason finally figured out that the barons had run into some financial problems and wanted Jason’s factory to increase the quantities of their product. They first approached the manager of the Taurus factory, who claimed he didn’t have the authority to expand his operation and could not get financing for the expansion anyway.
Then Maggie suggested they come to an interim agreement, where Taurus would buy more of their product, with them keeping and paying for storage, until the Taurus factory was ready to call for the increased number of components.
The barons tried to brow-beat Jason and Maggie into making more concessions, claiming they were under a timing constraint, and walked into a stone wall when Jason wanted to cancel the rest of the meeting. The two barons quickly apologized for any unintentional insults to Maggie and eagerly accepted her proposal.
“You did great,” Jason said as he leaned over and gave Maggie a peck on the cheek. She was blushing before he pulled away from her face.
“I guess the three of us, and Lisa, had better go visit this factory so we can determine exactly what the situation is,” Clarissa said. She had an excited look on her face as she grinned at Jason and Maggie. “Who would have thought business management could be this much fun?”
“I would not exactly call it fun,” Lisa said, “but is can be exciting, and often a bit challenging.”
“I guess you might have to study business management, now that you have all these business enterprises to manage and you cannot be a marine anymore,” Clarissa said to Jason.
“Lord Jason completed his officers’ training on Grendel,” Greg commented. “That means he should get full credit for a Bachelors’ degree in Military Science.”
“No wonder Grendel trained officers are so popular with the Imperial Marine Corps,” Emerson commented. “I guess you can then just add a Masters’ degree in Business Management.”
“I would not mind doing something like that,” Clarissa said. “Nobody ever talked about me or Chloe doing anything more than finish our secondary education, preferably before we get married.”
“We should plan for the necessary funds to allow all House Taurus members as well as their dependents to go to a good university,” Jason said to Maggie.
“Actually, House Taurus already has an education fund,” Maggie responded. “It has been stagnant for the past twelve years but it is still in a very good shape since nobody has used it for a long time.”
“Then you can start planning on doing your PhD,” Jason said to Maggie. “Clarissa gets to study business management. We should pay Mister Gray from that fund so he can stay and teach all the younger girls, including your daughters and Ron’s girls. Lisa, find out what is happening with Ron’s wife. When the hospital discharges her, they will not have anywhere to go. Tell Ron to bring his wife to House Taurus. Are there married quarters in the servants’ residence?”
