Chapter 4: Attack of the Concubines

Later that evening Jason had just come out of the bathroom attached to his bedroom when he found his four future concubines siting on the huge bed. They were all dressed in sleepwear and looked at him with looks that Jason could only describe as hungry looks, except for Megan who looked just curious.
“What’s up with your four?” he asked as he sat on the edge of the bed. He still had just a towel around his hips and was planning to sleep in the nude like he always did.

Jason glanced at the girls as well and noticed all four of them had secretive smirks on their faces.
“You didn’t use the gym this morning,” Jade said as she glared at Jason. Then she sobered up and blushed as she looked down. “Sorry, my lord. That was rude and uncalled for” she added softly. All Jason’s other ladies were already seated around the breakfast table and all of them were looking at Jason with suspicious glares, made even worse when the four concubines started giggling. Jason could see the girls were all burning to have a hen party without him. Even Jade picked on the mood.
“Sam, stay here. Ron, grab a cup of coffee and let’s go see the twins,” Jason ordered as he grabbed a plate full of pastries and the cup of coffee that Mia had just placed in front of him. Lois shyly smiled at Ron as she poured him a cup and handed him some pastries as well. For the first time since Ron became his body protector, he looked uncomfortable.
“You are married,” Jason commented as they walked out of the breakfast lounge. “Are your marriage exclusive?”
“Not by choice, my lord,” Rom muttered. “Both me and my wife are without any living family. We just never talked about adding other people into our lives.”
“Children?” Jason asked.
“Grace is ten and Geraldine is eight,” Ron said.
After the death of the previous Duke Mynos three months earlier, the duke’s Chief of Staff, an old gentleman named Peter Moss, has decided to retire as soon as the new duke has been appointed. When Jason first arrived at the ducal palace in Athena City, the chief of staff was the only person with any legal authority inside the palace. He promptly offered the duke’s private office to Jason for his use and offered to assist Jason in any way. Jason was impressed with how the old guy, who was a lot older than the already old duke, was managing the palace and staff. Peter Moss and the twins were waiting in the reception area when Jason and Ron arrived.
“Did I miss anything interesting?” Jason joked as he headed into the inner office while still carrying the plate of pastries and the cup of coffee.
“Nothing, my lord,” Moss said as he held the door for Jason. “These two seems nervous about something and the conference is eager to continue but I told them you will call them when you are ready.”
“Excellent,” Jason said as he sat down on one of the couches in the office. “Have a seat everybody” he added as he placed the pastries on the coffee table. “Help yourself.”
“This concerns Lady Lilly Osbourne, my lord...,” Allan said as he nervously sat next to his brother.
“Just come out and say it,” Jason suggested when Allan suddenly seemed at a loss of words.
“I would like to ask for her hand in marriage my lord,” Allan said. “I have been made to believe that she would not be joining your household and thus would be able to marry me. I feel so strong about this that I am willing to stand back so Alex can assume the title of duke, if I can have Lilly.” Alex didn’t seem surprised at his brother’s proposal. Jason just looked at Allan with no expression on his face, causing Allan to start fidgeting nervously.
“What are your thoughts on this matter, Alex?” Jason asked.
“He is besotted with her,” Alex said. “You should have asked her if she will still have you after you declined the title. She might just decline your offer because of that,” he said to his brother.
“I was asking about your feelings,” Jason said to Alex.
“I would have liked to have Lilly as well,” Alex said. “Especially since both the very lovely Lady Clarissa and the equally lovely Lady Chloe claimed that they were already part of your household and would thus not be able to accept my proposal. I actually wanted to ask you to confirm that Lady Chloe is a member of your household. I know you are their guardian but that would not stop Lady Chloe from accepting another offer, unless you declared her one of your concubines.”
“You can assume that, unlike Lady Lilly, neither Clarissa nor Chloe are available to accept any other proposals,” Jason said. Alex just bowed his head in acceptance.
“I have a proposition for the two of you,” Jason said. “You can decline if you want and it will not make any difference in my final decision but it will make matters easier for everybody else on Mynos. Alex, I want you to formally appoint Allan as your heir. You are free to change that once you have a son of your own but for now Allan should be your legal heir.” The two looked confused for a moment before Allan relaxed and looked down at his hands.
“I guess it makes sense,” Alex said. “I hereby declare, in front of two other witnesses, that my brother Allan Bitra is my legal heir.”
“Allan, I want you do declare Alex as your heir,” Jason said. Allan looked a bit confused but then he repeated the phrase his brother used.
“Good,” Jason said. “That was just a formality. I plan to reconvene the conference later today. At that time, I will finalize matters here. Before I reconvene the conference, I would like to review the ducal finances.”
“I will get the chief of finances, my lord,” Peter Moss said as he stood. The twins decided that they were done as well and also left.
After reviewing the finances of the Mynos system, and getting Maggie to act as advisors to him, Jason reconvened the conference for just after lunch. Clarissa was present, as well, taking notes. The two ladies were uncharacteristically shy towards Jason. The mere presence of Clarissa in the duke’s office resulted in the financial manager and his assistant to be tongue-tied. For the first time Jason noticed that Clarissa was getting upset at the effect she had on men.
“Would you have considered Alex’s proposal if you were not my chief of staff?” Jason asked Clarissa when they were alone for a short while. She gave him a glaring look but then her features softened and she just looked sad.
“If I was given that option before..., before Rick, before you appeared back on the scene, I would have considered a proposal from Allan. Alex is too full of himself, selfish,” Clarissa said. “Now?” she shrugged and looked away as she stayed quiet.
Before lunch, Viscount Sparta asked to see Jason in private. He had some proposals as well and Jason agreed to consider them.
Viscount Sparta and all the barons were back in the conference room after lunch, as well as a lot of other people with some interest in the proceedings. Jason smiled and again bowed and kissed Jade’s hand when she joined them as well, which caused everybody to again take renewed interest in the pretty girl in the hover chair.
“I have been analyzing events and conditions here on Mynos and have come to a final decision,” Jason announced. “My first order of business. There are some serious accusations against the duchess concerning what she knew or didn’t know about the real cause of the death of the duke. I will not sit in judgment on that matter. It will rest on the shoulders of the new Duke of Mynos to take care of that matter. I would like to suggest that the duchess not being stripped of her status and suffer any further embarrassment.” The audience murmured about that but Jason suspected most of the people agreed with his suggestion.
“Carlos Mondragon and his sister will be taken to Secundus for judgment in their roles for kidnapping and attempted murder of me and the Bitra twins. I will not sit in judgment in that case either,” Jason continued.
“Now the next part, a much more enjoyable pair of decisions,” Jason announced. “Alex, Allan, would you two please stand?” The twins stood up in front of the conference. “I received two proposals concerning both of you. I considered these proposals and have decided.” Jason stood and walked around the head table. Everybody watched his every move as he walked up to Lilly and took her hand. She blushed as she stood and followed him as he led her to where Allan was standing. There were a lot of giggles and gasps from the ladies as Jason places Lilly’s hand in Allan’s hand. Then he walked to where Viscount Sparta was sitting. Next to the viscount was his wife and only child, a pretty girl of Lilly’s age. Her eyes suddenly popped wide open as she realized what was about to happen. She shot her mother a questioning look but stood as Jason took her hand. Alex had a big grin on his face as Jason placed the viscount’s daughter’s hand in his.
“The two proposals I was asked to consider involved that of formal marriage. Allan Bitra, son of Duke Arnold of Mynos, do you take Lilly Osborne, daughter of Viscount Mount Grace of Grendel, as you wife?” Lilly was still blushing as she looked up at Allan who looked just as uncomfortable.
“I do,” he managed on his second try.
“Alex Bitra, son of Duke Arnold of Mynos, do you take Sandra Argos, daughter of Viscount Sparta on Mynos, as your wife?” Jason asked.
“I do,” he said as he grinned into the girl’s excited face.
“As special envoy to emperor Jason Pleiades, I hereby declare Lilly and Sandra to be the formal wives of their respective husbands, to share in the duties and titles bestowed on their husbands, to be prudent in selecting any concubines for their husbands. You may kiss each other.” The hall burst into a loud noise at that point as Jason returned to his seat.
“My next declaration,” Jason announced once the peace in the hall has returned. “You four can stay standing where you are. I hereby ask Peter Moss to come forward.” The old man looked surprised but came forward. “For this part I require you to kneel,” Jason said as he picked up his saber that was placed on the head table as an indication of Jason’s authority. “By the powers vested in me by His Imperial Majesty, emperor Jason Pleiades, I hereby appoint you, Peter Moss, as friend of the Empire and Knight Protector of Mynos. You will be known as Sir Peter till your death.” Jason placed the blade of his saber on the right shoulder of Peter Moss. As he helped the old man to stand, he noticed Moss had tears in his eyes.
“I hope those are not tears of pain for making you kneel,” Jason muttered softly to Sir Peter.
“No, my lord,” Sir Peter said. “It is the highest honor I could ever have received, and getting it from your hand, the son and heir of the emperor, makes it extra special.”
“I was hoping you would postpone your retirement for a few months, you will have a new young duke as well as your replacement to train,” Jason said.
“As Knight of the Empire I just will have to, my lord,” Sir Peter beamed at Jason.
“You four are young enough to stay standing right there,” Jason said when he returned to his chair. Sandra Bitra just blushed and smiled at him while Lilly Bitra blew him a quiet raspberry. “Nobody knew the real reason whey Duke Mynos never appointed an official heir, or why he never assigned his own minor title to any of his sons. During my investigation into matters pertaining to the dukedom of Mynos, I talked to a number of people and also examined the contents of the duke’s office, his journals, and other items of interest.” As Jason spoke, he picked up the brand-new medallion, made a couple of years earlier on request by the barons of the outer reaches or Arden Reaches as the four asteroid colonies were collectively known.
“One of the decisions the duke decided not to make was to implement a new title requested by the barons of the Arden Reaches,” Jason said as he walked around the table again and stood in front of the twins and their wives. “Granted, such a title could only become reality if the emperor decrees it. Any duke can request a new title be created and the emperor will comply if enough reason for such a title exists. I discovered that the duke of Mynos did request the creation of such a title but never enacted the title. As imperial envoy it is in my power to enact such a title. What I do not have to do, is give reasons for my decisions. I thus decided to appoint Alex Bitra as the new Viscount of Arden Reaches, overseer of the people and interests of the Arden Reaches.” Jason took the dormant medallion out of its container, touched the back of the medallion to his Taurus medallion and then pressed Alex’s thumb to the medallion. Alex’s eyes grew big as he felt the reaction of the medallion. Then Jason placed the new medallion over Alex’s neck. “Congratulations, Viscountess Sandra,” Jason said as he bent down and kissed the blushing girl on the cheek.
“One of the few perks of this job is to congratulate the pretty girls, by kissing them,” Jason commented and received a lot of laughter from the audience. He walked back to the main table and picked up the medallion of Viscount Mynos, the duke’s minor title. By the time he has returned to stand in front of the two couples the noise has mostly died down.
“Allan Bitra,” Jason announced as soon as the noise died. “I hereby appoint you the title of Viscount Kreta,” The people in the audience, especially the commoners, gasped in surprise.
The duke’s minor title dated back to the leader of the original colonization party which made the moon habitable. When the new nobleman later became the new duke, the title of Viscount Kreta became his minor title, to be passed on to his heir in the sixteenth birthday of the heir. The title was thus older than the ducal title, but since it was a minor title, it was not a title the population was used to encounter. Everybody assumed there was now a new viscount in the system. The silence continued as Jason activated the dormant medallion and then paired it with Allan.
“Congratulations, Viscountess Lilly,” Jason said as he kissed Lilly on her cheek.
“So, having the twins now both with the title of Viscount, would that make my final decision any easier?” Jason asked the attendees. He was met by mostly silence as he fetched the final medallion. He walked to Allan and used the newly activated medallion around Allan’s neck to activate the dormant ducal medallion, which instantly reacted, and seconds later the newly activated medallion of Viscount Kreta went dormant.
“Allan Bitra, Duke of Mynos, you are the protector of the people of Mynos. You have this duty by grace of His Imperial Majesty emperor Jason Pleiades.” As Jason walked back to his seat the hall erupted in renewed chaos.
