The Mynos system was in the same sector as Grendel and Bova, and thus part of the sector the Electra was patrolling. To get from Grendel to Secundus a ship has to jump via an empty system to Bova, which was the main jump gate hub for that sector. Mynos was six light years from Grendel and was a dead-end system, meaning it only has one jump gate to get in and out of the system. Grendel, Bova, Mynos, and the nameless empty system formed a kind of triangular pyramid.

The Mynos system consisted of two habitable worlds and a number of large mining asteroids. The seat of the Mynos government was on a large moon orbiting a gas giant on the outer edge of the goldilocks zone around the Mynos sun. The inner planet was called Sparta and was on the extreme inner edge of the goldilocks zone and, while people lived there, it was not truly habitable since the atmosphere was too thin with not enough oxygen.

The planet was a desert with temperature extremes that made plant-life unlikely. It rotated so slow that the same hemisphere was always facing the sun. This meant that all the water on the planet was on the dark side in the form of snow and ice while the sun side was a very hot dry desert. The planet was rich in all sorts of metals and minerals with enough of a population and industry to have a viscount ruling it. The planet surface looked and felt like an industrial hell so the entire population lived in deep shafts and cavities underground. The numerous factories were spewing pollutants into the atmosphere without restriction since the air was not breathable anyway and with no plant or animal life depending on it.

By contrast, the moon orbiting the gas giant was a virtual paradise. The original settlers never bothered to name the gas giant, other than to refer to ‘The Gas Giant’, but called the moon Athena. The moon had a comfortable temperature range and a breathable atmosphere with an indigenous plant and insect biosphere. What made Athena even more of a virtual paradise was the fact that the plants and insects were human compatible.

The outer asteroid mines in the Mynos system were all space habitats with permanent residents and were managed by barons reporting directly to the Duke of Mynos. There had been talk among the locals that all the asteroid mining colonies should fall under another viscount, somebody who would stand up for their rights and living conditions.

For unknown reasons, Duke Arnold of Mynos never appoint another viscount. He also never appointed an official heir even after he was in his late 60s. What made the issue more confusing was that the duke had two sons, twins aged sixteen. While the twins were close and got along very well with each other, they differed like day and night in personality.

The death of the duke two months earlier threw the system into turmoil, resulting in the Electra being called to stop a threatening rebellion.

“So, which of the two sons would make a more suitable duke?” Captain Ericson commented rhetorically after his XO gave a summary of the situation.

“Do we know who the opposing parties are?” Commander Garrister wondered.

“All of us might just have to act as advisors to Lord Jason if matters end up becoming a bit tricky,” Captain Ericson said.

“Nothing we discussed so far is giving me any indication that there might be a threatening rebellion,” Jason said, “unless the group of barons in the asteroid belt are threatening to appoint themselves a viscount without Imperial authority.”

“Captain, can we get Lord Jason’s other ADCs to join this meeting please.” Commander Garrister suddenly said as he looked up from his tablet.

“Get Gomes in as well.” The battalion commander added. “We might as well inform them both of the proposed exchange.” When the captain nodded his head, Gwen sent them messages. A few minutes later Dalton, Lisa, Carmen, and Delano entered the conference room and took seats at the long table.

“You first,” the XO said to the battalion commander.

“I talked to Lord Jason and we agreed to your request” Lt Col Winterton said as he faced Lisa and Dalton. “We still need confirmation from the commandant of the marine corps but with Lord Jason’s backing that will just be a formality. Lady Lisa, you will immediately assume the position of senior ADC to Jason Taurus. Lieutenant Dalton, you will assume command of the Fourth Platoon, Alpha-Company, Third Battalion.” Both Lisa and Dalton had huge grins on their faces as they first looked at each other and then at Jason.

“The real reason we called all of you here is because we have just received an official video message from the Merope.” Commander Garrister said. He turned on the large view screen against the wall and did something on his tablet. The next moment the screen turned dark and then the emperor appeared on the screen. He was sitting behind a desk with an elaborate version of the emblem of the Pleiades cluster behind him.

“This is an official Imperial declaration,” the Emperor said. “This declaration will also be sent to the Imperial Council for ratification as soon as we reach Secundus. Effective upon receiving this announcement, my heir, Jason Taurus, will assume the role of plenipotentiary representative of House Pleiades. Any decisions he makes in my name will be upheld by me. All subjects of the empire are hereby notified to give him any and all assistance he requires to fulfill his duties to the empire.” The emperor hesitated as he looked up at the screen. “Jason Taurus might be young but he is vastly more mature than his age would suggest. Once this appointment has been ratified by the Imperial Council, I intend to create a new title to reflect the new status of my heir. I might declare the new title to be hereditary, after discussing it with the imperial council.

Jason Taurus, this is a heavy burden I am placing on you but I know you will perform your new duties to the satisfaction of me and your mother. I included a private message to you. That is all. Good day” Then the video faded to black.

“Now that none of us expected,” Captain Ericson muttered.

“Suddenly the Electra has a lot more teeth,” the battalion commander added with a chuckle.

“Trust him to play the mom card,” Jason muttered.

“With you already being an earl, the only worthwhile new title would be that of a new dukedom,” Lady Lisa said. She meant it as a private comment but as she started talking, everybody stopped talking so everybody heard her.

“It sounded to me as if he would only decide what title it will be once the imperial council agrees.” Jason said. “I should be fine acting as imperial representative with my current title of Earl of Taurus.”

“Congratulations, My Lord. I think you will do great as roving ambassador,” Captain Ericson said. Jason was just as shocked as everybody who saw the announcement. It took a while for the implications to sink in.

“How do I access the private message?” Jason asked.

“Check your tablet, My Lord.” the XO suggested. “There is an encrypted section in the main message. I suspect it also went straight to your tablet.” Jason stood and walked out of the conference room as he activated his tablet. He didn’t even notice as everybody, including Captain Ericson, jumped to attention as he left.

He found the message quick enough. If it was encrypted, his tablet most likely decrypted it automatically. The message consisted of text explaining how to use his Taurus medallion to interact with other dormant medallions should he have a need to activate one. The text explained that while the emperor’s medallion was the only one that could activate a new ducal medallion, the Taurus medallion could reactivate any existing medallion below that of Earl, and also reactivate a ducal medallion by using the Taurus medallion and his tablet. There was a coded signal embedded in the message that would allow Jason to use his Taurus medallion to act on a ducal medallion. While Jason could fix any dormant medallion and assign it a new holder, he could not create a new title.

Jason realized that he now had the power to act as Imperial judge and arbitrator on any matter that would normally be referred to the emperor. He knew that each system had its own justice system, with the local duke as supreme judge. When it came to imperial matters, jurisdiction included the imperial court on Pleiades Prime and the Imperial Council before a case would go to the emperor. Jason assumed his new authority fitted in there somewhere, below the emperor, but he was not sure about the imperial council.

In school Jason was taught that all twelve members of the Imperial Council could act as imperial justices, with the Emperor having the final veto. As far as criminal matters went the local duke has the final say on matters occurring in his jurisdiction while civil matters could be escalated to the Imperial Court on Pleiades Prime or the Imperial Council on Secundus. Jason realized he needed to study up on imperial law if he was now a roaming imperial judge.

“Some instructions on how to handle dormant medallions,” Jason said when he got back to the conference room. “It seems my medallion now has some new abilities.”

“I guess there is not much more we can do until we know more,” The captain said. “We will reconvene as soon as we have more information.”

When Jason got back to his pod, the girls were all busy with school work. Both the couches were occupied and some of the girls were lying on the floor. All of them were busy reading on their tablets. Mister Gray was sitting at the desk but he stood and moved away when he noticed Jason.

“Can you cue up whatever you have on imperial law for me please,” Jason said as he sat down behind the desk.

“Imperial law?” Mister Gray asked in surprise. “Is this just for interest or do you have a specific topic in mind, my lord?” Clarissa and Sylvia both came out of Jason’s room with questioning looks on their faces. Before Jason could respond, the large screen came alive with the image of Captain Ericson facing the camera.

We have just received a formal imperial announcement.” the captain said. “We are the first to receive this but it will be made public within the next couple of days. This is what we received.” With that the screen turned blank and then the image of the Emperor appeared. Everybody in the pod sat up and watched as the announcement was repeated throughout the Electra.

“What does that mean?” Chloe asked as everybody in the pod stared at Jason after the emperor’s image disappeared from the screen.

“Oh, my word!” Mister Gray said. “No wonder you want to read up on Imperial law. I have some material on that topic but not nearly enough. I will have to see if the ship’s library has more. Lord Jason is now an Imperial ambassador or Imperial judge. From that announcement I would guess he just became one of the highest ranking noblemen in the empire.”

“Provided the Imperial Council approves of it,” Jason muttered.

“In my lifetime there has never been an imperial announcement that was this far-reaching.” Mister Gray said. “Up untill now the Imperial Council has been approving everything the Emperor asked for. They might want to interview you before ratifying this but I have no doubt that they will ratify it.”

Mister Gray only had a few introductory courses on Imperial law so Jason started reading those. Most of the stuff was fairly boring since it consisted mostly of the definitions of various legal terms. After a while he realized that the pod was exceptionally quiet. As he looked up, he noticed that all the girls were watching him, with huge eyes and serious looks on their faces. Not only did Jason feel way out of his depth but suddenly he also felt isolated.

“This is not working,” Jason muttered as he stood up from the desk and wiggled himself down on the couch between Andrea and Lotus. Both of them were predending that they were reading their tablets but like everybody else, they were watching him. He grabbed the nearest girl on the floor, which happened to be Chloe, and pulled her onto his lap. He had her sitting upright on his thighs as he propped his tablet against her lower back. “Can I have some muttering and other related sounds please,” he said before trying to read again.

“Can we move as well?” Andrea asked.

“Yes, please,” Jason said as he reached out and tweaked her nose. She gave him a skewed smirk as she wiggled her nose in response. It took a while before the rest of the girls started acting normally again but after a while the nearly dead silence in the pod was replaced with normal mutterings, comments and giggles.

Later that day Jason found himself sitting next to Lilly. She was also studying like all the other girls but unlike the others she kept her distance and stayed quiet around him. She would respond when he talked to her, but seldom started chatting to him like the others.

“So, tell me,” Jason asked when nobody else was close by. “What do you think of being sent off to Secundus with me? Have your parents even bothered to ask you if you want to go? What do you hope to achieve by going to Secundus?” Lilly looked back at Jason with huge eyes and a surprised look on her face.

“Um, I guess I’m supposed to end up in a suitable marriage,” she said softly. Then she seemed to gather herself as she sat more upright and turned her shoulders towards Jason. “No, they didn’t ask me if I wanted to go to Secundus, just like they never asked Lavender if she wanted to go to Bova. Lotus is the only one who ended up getting what she really wanted. She has been eyeing you from a distance ever since you moved to the castle and you got more involved with everybody else. She never spoke to you, but she talked a lot about you. She was careful never to let Mother hear her talk about you. We used to tease her a lot, about her picking you. Since then I realized she is the happiest of the three of us. She got to be with the guy she wanted. It would not have mattered to her if you ended up a regularly employed commoner or farm hand. The fact that you ended up being the heir of the Emperor makes no difference to her.”

“Mm, that was all about Lotus,” Jason responded, “but what about you?”

“I guess I never really knew what I wanted,” she said. “Both Lavender and I always just let Mother dictate what we do, who we see, how we behave. It’s nearly as if she was brainwashing us into being the good little daughters that she wanted us to be. I guess in a way being sent to Secundus is a blessing in disguise. For the first time in my life I will not be influenced by my mother.”

“Can I assume you don’t see yourself as one of my many concubines?” Jason asked with a teasing smile. Lilly returned his look with a serious expression on her face.

“That would be unfair to Lotus,” she said. “She does not mind having to share you with all the others but she would not like having to share you with me or with Lavender. I think I also grew up some over the past couple of weeks. Before the season I was still this happy ignorant girl with a mother with too high hopes for me. Then you appeared and our world got upended. I believe Mother is as confused as I am when it comes to you. I think she was hoping to lure you into her clutches by offering me to you, and then to try and control you like she does with Daddy. Instead you picked Lotus, the youngest daughter who has not been brainwashed like Lavender and me. I came to realize you are way out of my class. Actually, I think you are way out of Clarissa’s class, and she was seen as the most sought-after marriage partner in the Empire, out here in this sector at least. Looking at Lotus, and even Roxy, I now think it is far more important to like your husband as a person, not as a title with money. I think it would be very easy to like you like that but I had my chance and I blew it. Mother blew it. I’m happy for Lotus. I will not try to get into your harem.”

“Would you settle for friendship?” Jason asked as he looked her in the eyes, the girl whom he always fantasized about and realized they would never get together. Now they still would not be together but for a totally different reason.

“I’d like that,” she said with a shy smile. “I envy Lotus but not because I didn’t get you. I envy her for getting somebody she wanted and you wanting her back.”

The Electra moved closer to the gas giant as the commanders tried to figure out what was happening and how to resolve the lack of a duke in the system. The small group of barons who ran the asteroid colonies, and who initially requested the help of the Imperial Marines, seemed just as confused and unsure of what to do next.

There were definitely two polarized factions in the system. All they knew was that one faction wants one of the twins to be appointed as the new duke while the other faction wants a totally new duke unrelated to the previous duke. The baron who communicated with them claimed he and his fellow barons are in one camp and Viscount Sparta is in the other camp. Initially, before the Electra arrived, it sounded as if the two factions were ready to start a civil war over the matter. So far nothing has been heard from the twins or their mother about the issue.

“We finally had a message from somebody claiming to speak for the ducal palace on Athena,” The XO announced two days later. The top ranks onboard the Electra, as well as Jason and his ADCs, were again in the conference room reviewing what they knew and studying maps of the system.

“Who from?” Lt Col Winterton asked.

“A person named Carlos Mondragon” Commander Garrister said. “He claims to be the confidant of the duchess and a close friend of the deceased duke. He also claimed that the duchess is still mourning the death of the duke and the twins are arguing all the time about who should take over. He said he was the only calm one around so he will convey all messages between us and the palace.

“Any way to find out where he comes from, his background?” Captain Ericson asked.

“I have heard that name before,” Gwen suddenly spoke up. “A news article about one of the larger independent industrial families in the Pleiades Prime system.” Gwen was scrunching up her face as she tried to recall what she heard. Suddenly she smiled and relaxed her shoulders. “They’re one of the wealthier industrialist families based inside a huge hollowed-out asteroid orbiting the prime system. The patriarch died a few years ago and his son was supposed to inherit everything and take over the operation but then the older daughter got appointed as the new CEO. The son, this Carlos Mondragon, still had the majority shares in the corporation but he was not allowed to run the show.”

“I remember now as well,” Lt Col Winterton added. “There was a blowup over the heir of Mondragon Industries being sidelined in favor of his two sisters. He has something like 75% of the shares but his two sisters got 51% of the vote. If both the sisters decide to do something, he has to listen to them. On his own he cannot do anything.”

“Okay, so what does he want?” Captain Ericson asked.

“He didn’t make any demands or requests,” Garrister said. “At first he just said that they are having an internal power struggle and that Imperial Marines are not required since there is no fighting involved. I told him we are not here to fight; we are here to represent the Empire. He still didn’t want to give out any details about the internal power struggle until I told him we have an Imperial envoy onboard and that the Emperor would want to know all the details about how the new duke came into power. That seemed to have shaken him a bit. He asked for more time to find out what the twins have to say about the Imperial envoy.”

“Like I said, we suddenly have a lot more clout,” Lt Col Winterton said as he smiled at Jason.

“Can we contact Viscount Sparta directly and get his input as to what is going on?” Jason asked.

“Good idea,” Garrister said. “Let me get onto that.”

“Can I tag along, commander?” Lisa asked as she gave Jason a questioning look. Jason nodded as Garrister waved at her to follow him to the communications center.

“So, the only people we have had any contact with is this one baron and Carlos Mondragon?” Jason asked.

“The one baron, Mykonos I think, seems to be their spokesperson but there were three other people of equal rank in the room at the time,” Captain Ericson said.

“Viscount Sparta seems to be on his own power trip,” Garrister commented when he and Lisa returned to the conference room. “He claims that he doesn’t care which twin becomes the new duke but since the old duke has not appointed one of them as his heir it means the old duke didn’t want either of them to become the new duke. He also added that he does not trust anything the palace says. He didn’t say it out loud but he was hinting that as the ranking nobleman in the system he should be taking control of the system until the Emperor gets around to appoint a new duke. I bet he hopes that takes a long time, and that the Emperor then just makes him the new duke.”

“Did he say anything when you told him about Jason?” Captain Ericson asked.

“Yes, that was when he claimed to be the ranking nobleman that should be in charge,” Garrister replied. “He became a lot less communicative when he realized Jason actually has the authority to appoint a new duke.”

“We have a response from Mister Mondragon,” Garrister announced half an hour later. “He only sent a message, stating that the twins would like to meet with the imperial envoy in person so they can state their sides directly and in private. He stated that the twins are currently on their way to the asteroid colonies to negotiate with the barons, in Mondragon’s private luxury yacht. He said the captain of the yacht will wait and allow the Imperial envoy to join the twins.”

“What if we refuse to let Jason go onboard this yacht?” Captain Ericson asked. “Why can’t they come aboard the Electra?”

“I told him we would prefer to have all the parties on the Electra but he declined,” Garrister said. “He didn’t say it outright but he hinted that the twins are edgy and don’t trust outsiders. They will allow Jason onto the yacht but no Marines. I told him Jason goes nowhere without his body protectors and ADCs, who happens to be Marine officers. He didn’t respond to that.”

“This character keep sounding more and more like trouble,” Captain Ericson commented.

“So, how do we handle this?” Winterton asked. “Dare we risk letting Lord Jason leave the Electra?”

“I’m willing to go onboard the yacht, provided I get to take my body protectors and ADCs, at least some of them, with me,” Jason said. “As far as my personal safety is concerned, I bet not many people will see me and my wand as a threat.”

“I am still against that, my lord, but the final decision is yours,” the captain said.

Forty-eight hours later the Electra and the Mondragon yacht approached each other cautiously. The yacht looked totally different to any other space ship Jason had ever seen, not that he was an expert but he had seen images of a number of cargo ships and naval ships.

While they all used the open lattice framework structure with rotating rings, the Mondragon yacht, named Sarina, consisted of a solid cylinder of about 50 meters in diameter and 300 meters long which put her at the same size as most cargo ships. Her bow was closed and shaped like a dome with a radius of 50 meters. Her stern was shaped like an inverted dome with four propulsion exhaust nozzles in the center, meaning she could not slow down without turning around first.

Captain Ericson was advised, by a female with a sexy sounding voice, that the Sarina dock was not compatible with the dock of the cruiser because of where the docking port was located; between the four engine nozzles at the rear, but that any shuttle could dock with the Sarina.

Carlos Mondragon, who was apparently not aboard the Sarina, informed the Electra earlier that Jason could take only female attendants with him and only four of them. Ron bitched and nearly threw a tantrum until Jason suggested he help crew the shuttle and try to sneak aboard once they were on the Sarina. Jason, Lisa, Gwen, Carmen, and Shelly were all dressed in navy-issue pressure suits for the trip. Jason was unarmed but each of the females had a laser pistol and a short combat sword.

It turned out ridiculously easy for Ron to sneak onboard the Sarina. The navy shuttle and the Sarina obviously had compatible docking rings so Ron, acting as if he was a navy rating manning the airlock, casually slipped into the airlock with Jason and the girls.

Since the airlock was weightless, Ron just stayed out of view of the observation window. When the inner airlock hatch opened, they found an empty ante-chamber so Ron exited the airlock with them. There were lockers with civilian pressure suits in the ante chamber so Ron hid in one of them while Jason and the four girls removed their helmets.

The central shaft of the Sarina was built like a spiral staircase with smooth surfaces on the outside of the stairs. Jason could see that if the Sarina was accelerating the central shaft would become a staircase, with a sliding surface on the outside which could allow for a rapid descent towards the rear of the ship. At that moment the ship was coasting so the staircase looked more like a spiraling passageway.

There were a number of hatches leading off the flat bottom surface where they found themselves. Then a person came floating into view along the spiraling passageway. She was dressed in a formfitting boiler suit with her fairly long dark brown hair tied up into a long braid that seemed to be reaching her waist.

“Welcome aboard the Sarina, ” the young woman said as she got closer. “I’m Dania Mondragon, captain of the Sarina. If you would follow me, I will lead the way to the conference room.” Jason was surrounded by his female crew so he was certain Dania Mondragon didn’t get much of a look at him before she turned around and headed back where she came from.

The Sarina seemed to have internal decks because they encountered a landing every 50 meters as they progressed along the spiraling shaft. At each landing there were a number of hatchways, at least four on each landing. Dania Mondragon led the way nearly all the way to the front where she opened one of the hatches and led the way inside.

Sam was in front of Jason and stopped so suddenly she caused Jason to bump into her. It was a conference room with another open hatch towards the left of the room. Dania Mondragon didn’t stop and kept heading for other hatch. There were three males sitting at the far end of the table, with four more males floating against the walls. Two of them were near the hatch where Jason, Sam, and the three ADCs had just entered while two more were guarding the hatch where Dania just exited.

“Come in and have a seat, please,” the man at the end of the table said as he waved at them. Jason noticed all four of the males floating near the hatches had laser pistols in their hands which were aimed in the general direction of the floor while glaring at Jason and the females. “Please hand over any weapons before my men get too nervous. We don’t want to hurt anybody, at least not just yet.”

That was when both the wands in the sleeves on Jason’s thighs started vibrating. They didn’t vibrate as badly as the last time Jason was facing a weapon but they still vibrated gently. Jason just lifted his hands as he pushed off and floated towards the one side of the table. He recognized the other two males instantly even if he had never seen them before. They were teenagers and had similar characteristics but were not identical. They had to be the duke’s twin sons.

“Let go of me!” Lisa growled behind Jason. He anchored himself against one of the chairs and looked back to where one of the males was trying to determine if Lisa had any more weapons on her and ended up groping her. All four the females were now without their laser pistols and short swords.

“Anybody going to check if he has any weapons?” the older male at the head of the table asked the four guards.

“I don’t have any weapons, but you touch me and you die,” Jason said in a conversational tone. “I’m an Imperial envoy under direct orders of the Emperor, and thus should be treated like an Imperial ambassador.”

“A bit young and rather snotty to be an Imperial ambassador, don’t you think?” the man said. “How exactly do you plan to kill them?”

“I never said I was going to kill them,” Jason said. “What are your names?” Jason asked as he looked at the two teenagers. Both of them were looking ever so slightly pissed as they glared at the older man.

“Oops, where are my manners,” the man said. “I’m Carlos Mondragon, the owner of this fine vessel, and soon to be the ruler of this fine system.” He gave a nasty snort. “That is twin A and this is twin B, brats of the late Duke of Mynos. Give the kid your names, boys.”

“I’m Alex Bitra.” the one across from Jason said in a surly voice.

“I’m Allan Bitra.” the one next to Jason said.

“Pleased to meet you,” Jason said. “I’m Jason Taurus.”
