Chapter 14

I didn’t go to work that day. Too much on my mind.

“How are you, Sis? I heard the news as soon as I got home from work,” my sister said. She had come to visit. “I would’ve called you sooner, but Liam suggested you had to mellow out first.”

My sister’s husband had the magic touch with Jenny. He had pulled her out of her depression and changed her into a different woman.

“I’m fine, Jen. No worries.”

“What made you finally say yes to Ray?” my sister asked.

“It was the right thing to do,” I replied, trying to rest importance from the matter. “Why play hard to get? Ray is my baby’s father. We’re going to be a happy family.”

“Don’t give me that crap! You’re talking with me,” Jenny said, with a laugh. “Tell me the truth. Why the change of heart? You said Ray wasn’t in love with you. You said that didn’t want to marry him just because it was convenient.”

“I’m taking a gamble. Win or lose. Ray would either end up hating me or loving me forever. Sometimes you need to take a leap of faith, and this is mine.”

Then, I explained to Jenny about Ray’s slip of the tongue after we had sex.

“Well, you certainly are taking a gamble with Ray. But you are making the right choice if you ask me,” Jenny opined.

“I hope so,” I sighed. “Maybe we’ll grow on each other. You know, learn to love each other. Ray was my best friend in high school. We are best friends again. That is a great foundation for any relationship. He is amazing.”

My mind flashed to the mind-blowing sex we shared.

“The wedding is really this Friday, as in three days away?”

“Yup.”

“Oh, God, Kara! We can hardly plan anything good with so little time,” Jenny complained. “We need to find you a dress and...”

“We don’t want a big wedding. We just want to get it done and move on with our lives,” I interrupted my sister.

“How many people are we talking about?” Jenny asked.

“Mom and Dad, you and your husband, of course,” I said.

“What about your co-workers?”

“I don’t want the crew there. It will complicate things, Jenny. They don’t expect an invitation anyway.”

“Besides I don’t want Floyd Leland and Martha anywhere near the place that day.”

“What about Ray’s parents?”

“I have no idea. I’ll let Ray handle that. But I think he won’t invite them.”

“Are they still on a cruise?”

I shrugged. “I’m not sure. I think things are not kosher with his parents. But, that’s Ray’s problem.”

I saw my sister wanted to say something, but I talked faster than her.

“Jen, I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but you’re trying to complicate things, and we want to keep them simple.”

“Okay, okay,” Jenny said raising her palms. “I’ll call you tomorrow to help you pick a dress, unless you want to get married in jeans and a T-shirt.”

“Not a bad idea,” I said, and I meant it.

Jenny chuckled. “I can almost hear Mom saying, ‘This dress doesn’t have enough sparkle’, or “This one isn’t traditional enough’.”

We laughed hard.

“I love you, Jen,” I said, hugging my sister.

That evening, I asked Ray about his parents, and he said that they didn’t need to be present at the wedding.

“I think it’s best if we don’t invite them. They’ll probably side with your mother and insist on having a big wedding. We don’t need that kind of pressure. We want to keep things simple. I’ll call them after we’re married. Trust me; it’ll be better that way.”

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely,” Ray lifted his gaze to mine.” I don’t want to be a bundle of nerves on our wedding day, I’m afraid I will be if my parents are there.” Then, he adopted a serious tone of voice.

“Kara, you’re going to be my wife. There shouldn’t be any secrets between us. So I want to tell you everything about Amy. Kind of exorcise her from my system before our wedding.”

I placed my hand on his. “Okay, how come you end up with someone like her? Don’t take it the wrong way, but she doesn’t seem your type of girl.”

Ray scratched the back of his head, and twisted his mouth, “I have asked myself the same question over and over again. The first thing that always comes to my mind is that she kind of came with the job. She was always around at the office. To this day, I’m not sure if she was supposed to work there or she was just looking for a new lover.”

“How did you two meet?”

“I had been working for her father for almost a year. Her old man liked me. You know me, I’m a good worker, responsible, I learn fast, I get along well with others, and always keep ahead of the game. He took me under his wing.”

I nodded and invited him to go on.

“At some point, Amy’s father started saying that I was like the son he never had.”

“Oh, boy, that was an open invitation to date his daughter.”

“Yeah, I thought the same. From that day on, Amy was always looking for an excuse to have lunch with me. One day, I asked her out for a date. The fact that she was also the kind of girl my parents would approve of played a part in my decision.”

“Unlike me,” I thought.

“Anyway, we dated for a few months and became exclusive, or so I thought. In hindsight, I believe she wanted to have a relationship with me because her father liked me and she knew he would approve of us being together.”

“So she could keep being slut without her father suspecting anything.”
