Chapter 16
A loud horn honked outside the cabin.
Bert and Karen opened the front door and found a smiling Nick driving a snowplow.
“Someone asked for an Uber?”
“Very funny, Kid. What are you doing here?”
“And Merry Christmas to you, too, chief. Good morning, Mrs. Morris. Nice to see you again. Merry.”
Karen blushed. “Merry Christmas, indeed, Nick.”
“To answer your question, I’m rescuing you two, of course. The Twins told me you might be stranded up here.”
“The Twins, of course,” Bert mumbled. “I’m going to have a long conversation with my sisters when we get back. Merry Christmas, Kid.”
“Good luck with that,” said Nick, who was enjoying a good belly laugh. “Get dressed. We have to go to town. If we hurry, we can make it on time for the Christmas service. The road is clear. You can follow me in your truck.”
“What about my car?” Karen asked.
“We’ll retrieve your car later, Mrs. Morris. There’s a crew coming behind me with sand to try to keep the roads drivable, at least for a while. So, we should be good to go,” Nick explained.
“Okay, Kid. Give us ten minutes to pack.”
They made it just in time for the church service.
Bert and Karen walked into the church, holding hands, and made their way toward the first row where the Twins were sitting. Faith stood up, resting on her cane. “Bertie, over here. We saved you a seat, darling.”
Karen’s daughter and her family were sitting with them. They had arrived in Middletown the day before.
Bert wanted to tell the Twins about Karen, but they didn’t give him a chance. He should’ve known Hope would take care of that for him.
“Who’s this, Bertie? Your girlfriend?” she asked, feigning ignorance.
