Chapter 20

“We need to take Mr. Spencer out of here asap,” Aaron said. Lindsey nodded in agreement.

Her years working as her sister’s assistant had turned her into a resourceful, inventive, and adaptable person.

She punched a number on her phone. There was only one person she could trust with Spencer’s safety.

“Hi, Cassandra?”

“Hey, girlfriend, I heard you were back in LA, I know I said it before, but I’m sorry for your loss. I never met your father but I know how much you loved him. How are you feeling?”

“Thank you, Cassie. I’m as a fine as I can be. Listen, we’ll catch up later, now I’m in the middle of a situation and I need your help.”

“What have you done?”

“Not me but a good friend of mine. He’s from my hometown...”

“And you brought him here with you! It was about time!” Cassandra approved.

Lindsey blushed, “What? No, there’s nothing going on between Spencer and me...” Spencer let out an involuntary grunt.” “But he needs a place to stay off the radar while I think of a way of sorting a tricky situation out.”

“You know you can count on me. What happened?”

“He might have hit Brandon,” Lindsey said lowering her voice.

Cassandra laughed at the other end of the line, which eased Lindsey’s anxiety a bit.

“Good. I’m sure Brandon deserved it. I already like your friend.”

They talked for a short while, Lindsey nodded from time to time, at some point she mentioned Starbucks, and finally, she called, “Spencer?”

He turned to find Lindsey holding her phone out toward him.

“It’s Cassandra. She wants to talk with you.”

“Cassandra wants to talk with me?” he asked as he took the phone she offered him. “Who is she?”

“A good friend of mine. I trust her with my life.”

“Hello?”

“Hello, there. You just became my hero. How hard did you punch the asshole?” a young woman’s voice asked.

“Errr ... I’m not sure. It was a good punch.”

“Good. Listen. Go to the Starbucks where you were with Lindsey before. Can you reach there?”

“Yes, I can.”

“I’m coming to get you in ten minutes.” Then she hung up.

A little numb with surprise, Spencer handed the phone back to Lindsey. “She’s bossy.”

Lindsey laughed. “That she is. But it suits her. Look, I have to go back and update Mel on everything that happened. Don’t worry, we have a great lawyer and Brandon is not the best-liked person right now. I’m sure a lot of people feel like you did a public service punching him. We’ll use my recording to prove you were provoked if necessary.”

“Thank you, Linds. And I’m sorry for all the trouble I caused ... but when he said those horrible things about you...”

Lindsey placed a hand on Spencer’s cheek and caressed it with her thumb. “I know.”

She disappeared inside the hotel and Aaron followed her.

Spencer walked out of the back street and braced himself for what was to come.
