AUTHOR COMMENTARY - CHAPTER 9: Routine
After the relentless pace of the first eight chapters, my goal here was to slow things down and show Paul’s life settling into a stable, comfortable routine, with Lisa as his girlfriend, and Clarissa a close friend and confidante. But the chapter’s underlying theme is that no matter how comfortable a routine is, a relationship can’t last without a foundation of genuine, mutual love. Paul and Lisa respect each other immensely but aren’t in love, and so their relationship comes to a natural, gentle, and respectful end.
The two key aspects of this chapter are the growth that Lisa shows and a new, different test of Paul’s “Good Man” persona.
This is a pivotal chapter for Lisa’s growth. She starts as an inexperienced and vulnerable girl, but the safe and supportive relationship with Paul allows her confidence to blossom. This transformation is vital, as Lisa goes on to become an important supporting character for Paul in future books, offering advice and home truths—a role she couldn’t have fulfilled without the journey she takes in this chapter.
For Paul, this chapter marks a new level of maturity. Clarissa forces him into a moment of self-awareness about his feelings, and the breakup itself provides a different kind of test for his ‘Good Man’ persona. In marked contrast to how he behaved after his break-up with Kelly, he shows no anger or bruised ego. Instead, his immediate reaction is one of kindness and support, prioritising Lisa’s happiness over everything else. He once again demonstrates who he is at his core.
This chapter expertly handles the entire lifecycle of a teenage relationship—from inception to an amicable conclusion—within a single, focused narrative. It uses the relationship between Paul and Lisa to build Lisa’s confidence and to further highlight Paul’s emotional maturity and the true direction of his affections.
1) Plot
New plots & subplots introduced:
The Lisa and Lee Romance Plot: A new romantic path is introduced for Lisa in the form of Lee Green. Described as a once “annoying geek” who has matured, he represents a genuine, mutual romantic prospect for the newly confident Lisa, allowing her character a happy and hopeful exit from her relationship with Paul.
</li>Existing plots/subplots progression:
Paul and Lisa’s Romance Subplot: This plot is brought to its complete and logical conclusion. It begins with the relationship being formally defined (“boyfriend”), progresses through a montage of their dating “routine” over several weeks, and culminates in a mature, mutual breakup. The relationship successfully serves its narrative purpose: it was a gentle, positive experience that built Lisa’s confidence but was never destined to last, as Paul internally admits to a lack of “fireworks.”
Kevin and Lauren’s Romance Subplot: This is neatly resolved off-page. Lisa’s report that Kevin and Lauren “worked it out themselves” provides a satisfying conclusion to the crisis from the previous chapter, reinforcing the success of Paul’s intervention.
Paul and Clarissa’s Relationship: This plot is advanced through their conversations. Clarissa solidifies her role as Paul’s primary confidante, the only person with whom he is honest about his lack of true passion for Lisa. Her insightful questions push him to confront the emotional realities of his situation, strengthening their intellectual and emotional bond.
