Conversation with Jason Tanner-Grimes, Abby Tanner-Grimes, Donna Tanner-Grimes, and occasionally Yan Tanner-Grimes
Andrew Kiraly: First off ... to be honest I’m not sure why you called me out of the blue. I wasn’t expecting to get the opportunity to talk with you until you were out of hiding. This is off the record, right?
Jason: Yeah. And because it’s off the record ... I don’t know. I felt like we should talk with you before the actual interview. Maybe as an apology for how I treated you in Hawaii. And I do apologize.
Andrew: That’s okay. It was a very stressful time ... definitely not the right time to interview you. I’ve got you on speaker phone, are you hearing me okay?
Jason: Loud and clear ... you’re on the speakers here, we coming through okay?
Andrew: Yeah, so, what’s up? What made you decide to call me in the middle of the day?
:: laughter in the background::
Jason: Middle of the night here, we decided to make it easy for you.
Andrew: Oh. I don’t suppose you’d like to tell me where you are?
Jason: Tuscany.
Donna: Jason!
Jason: If we can’t trust Chorale’s press agent, why bother hiding at all? Besides ... no, not going into that.
Andrew: Not sure I see the logic in that, but okay. So, how’s Tuscany in the winter?
Abby: I’ll take that one if I may?
Jason: Certainly, my love.
Abby: It’s not a deep winter, we haven’t seen much snow ... and it has seemed to me that most any day, Spring could break out, like it’s just below that thin layer of snow or frost, ready to surprise us. And, since we’re coming up on the end of Winter, that sensation is growing stronger.
Donna: I’m taking bets that when Spring does start showing up, there’s going to be a naked Abby dancing in the fields.
Abby: Don’t bet against that, by the way.
Andrew::: laughing:: I won’t. So...
Jason: Why the call?
Andrew: Yeah.
Jason: Yan’s here, too, and she’s just bouncing, wanting to answer, but has agreed to stay out of this. Although I’m pretty sure you need to interview her before too long. In answer to your question ... it seemed like a good idea earlier this morning when we were talking. So ... ask your questions.
Andrew: Uh, I’m going to skip the usual preliminary questions. I’ve read everyone’s notes on your kidnapping, spoken with the crew of the Li Mei – and it took an order from Madam Gao for them to cooperate, same deal with the staff at Hau’oli Mala about the attack there ... how are the three of you doing?
Donna: You first, Jason, then Abby, then me.
Jason: Okay, me first. Thanks. Learning how to fight, so I’ll be useful next time. Waking up sometimes in the middle of the night feeling like I’m drowning ... drowning in the dark, in the depths of the Pacific. Until recently I was talking with Dr. Susan Lowenstein about ways to handle ... ways to handle ... if I don’t find ways to deal with the hate I feel for the Nelson family, it sometimes feels like it’s going to eat me alive. She was able to help with that. Church helps a lot.
Andrew: Church? Like Milady Carol’s ‘Church’?
Jason: Exactly. Abby?
Abby: I’ve never been comfortable with hate ... so the Nelsons have made me very uncomfortable. I’m focusing on life, on being in these moments, not looking forward, not looking back, on the life growing in my womb. I’m blessed beyond anything I’ve ever dreamed of, and it ... it seems to me allowing anything to mar my appreciation of these blessings is ... it’s just wrong. Donna?
Donna: I see their faces in my dreams, see them leering at us. So I see their faces when I’m sparring with my sister Helen. I feel safe doing that because she won’t let me hurt her ... which is why I won’t see their faces when I’m sparring with Jason. Sorry, husband...
Jason: Don’t apologize ... I appreciate it.
Donna: So ... I fight them when I’m awake, when I’m training. At night ... I ... I try to hide from them. I’m not very good at it.
Andrew: Uh ... Okay. Traumatized and dealing with it. Not to step on any frayed nerves, but ... what’s it like living with a bounty on your heads?
Jason: I’m getting waved at by Donna and Abby, and they’re shaking their heads, so I guess this one’s mine. To be honest ... it’s not something I think of ... except when I do. Where we are ... clear fields of fire around the estate, a great security staff, and ... well, stone walls around us. We toured the panic room at this place ... did you have a chance to see Hau’oli Mala’s panic room?
Andrew: No, but the maitre ‘d described it to me.
Jason: This estate has a smaller panic room, about a quarter of the size of Hau’oli Mala’s ... and we’ve added a lot of people to our constellation. Pretty sure we’ll all fit here, but it’s going to be a bit tight.
Donna::: snort:: That’s one way of putting it. Pretty sure half the crowd’s gonna have to breathe out so the other half has room to breathe in.
Abby: Plus lots of people sitting in other people’s laps.
Jason: Lots of people. Back to the question ... being my age and being coached on what to do when people wanting to kidnap us show up ... it sucks. It really sucks. But most of the time, I don’t think about it, like I said. There’s a lot going on here, several people have commented we’re having the busiest honeymoons they’ve ever heard of.
Andrew: Honeymoons?
Jason: Yeah, we’re combining honeymoons. Abby, Donna, and mine, combined with Yan and ours.
Andrew: Okay, now I understand. What’s making your honeymoons so busy?
Donna: Jason’s pretending he’s dying of thirst, so while he gets something to drink... for all of us ... I’ll take this one. Everyday we have church in the late afternoon, just a half-hour. Then we get ready for cocktails – totally Yan’s idea and it’s brilliant – we have our cocktail hour, then supper. Cocktails and supper are semi-formal on Sundays with everyone using their best manners. Friday nights we play ‘Graveyards & Ghouls’ – a lot more fun than most of us thought it would be. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, Jason, Abby, Lizzy, and I have school in the morning, a light lunch, then we all hit the gym, work out, then Jason and I go train with my sister, Helen, who can beat the shit out of us both if she wanted to.
Andrew: Whoa ... that is a busy schedule!
Donna: Yeah, but it’s flexible, too. If we decide to cancel classes one day, we do. Jason’s a slave-driver, so the gym and training don’t get skipped. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we try to hit the gym, and Jason’s not nearly so strict.
Jason: Yep, slave-driver, that’s me.
Andrew: I’m going to ask a question where I think I already know the answer, if that’s okay?
Abby and Donna: Okay!
Andrew: Jason, why won’t you skip the gym and training?
:: long silence::
Andrew: If you don’t want to answer-
Jason: Give me a minute, goddamnit!
:: long silence::
Jason: Look ... first off, I’m sorry, Andrew, it’s just...
