Jim sent me a formal email the day after the Georgia trip, letting me know that they were going to pull Eric and Margie from our team soon. We needed to learn everything we could during our last couple of Dives, so that they could go help others and we could start training our own ‘newbies’. Well, shit.
Eric also sent me an email, basically forwarding the one that he’d gotten saying the same thing. He and Margie would try to think of anything they could, that needed to be covered in our last two Dives together. If we could think of anything, we needed to be sure we brought it up while we could.
Meanwhile, we had set up a second staff-training session at the BTF. This time, with a little experience under our belt, we were inviting all ‘staffers’ of all ages, but still only from Alabama. That would be in two weeks on Sunday, January 16th. As soon as I heard about it I texted Ron and had him order a hundred more practice staffs from the lumber brand of his choice. He could pick it up or have it delivered, but we needed to have them at least a week early to give us time to deal with problems.
I also updated the ‘press release’ to go on ALPRA’s website. I changed the cost to free for teenagers, $5 for adults who pre-registered, and +$5 for anyone who did NOT pre-register so either $5 or $10 depending upon their age. The big thing this time was to point out that parking was limited so carpooling was encouraged.
Oh, and I had to contact everyone who had won the eight auctions, trying to set up delivering the four RoUS paws and four Giant Centipede legs so we could get paid for them. Since Eric hadn’t had any trouble transporting the first set we figured that any Weapon could probably do it, but Eric and Margie were still our best bets. Since Margie was supposedly now working for Team Newbie, LLC, maybe she would do it this time. Of course, maybe she would take Eric with her.
Cindy and I went out to the Gadsden Mall New Years’ Eve to watch the fireworks over the river. While we were out there getting cold she let me know that I needed to come up with an involved-sounding thing we needed to do in B’ham the next weekend. We would be there from the 7th through the 9th, really until the morning of the 10th if we could. I asked why, and she just looked at me.
Aye, aye, Captain! Apparently the wait was over, and she wanted to do it right, with a whole weekend spent in a hotel room. Well, ‘in our own home’ would be better, but that wouldn’t happen for at least a couple more years.
That settled it, I needed to set up our next Dive. I sent a team text out, asking if Saturday, January 15th worked for everyone and if we were up to taking on the ‘River Rats’ up in Decatur. If we all died, at least Cindy and I wouldn’t die as virgins. I didn’t put that last part in the text. I did point out that no one was allowed to get hurt in that Portal, as we had staff training at the BTF the next day.
Well, we needed to paint more spots on the training ground. And, work out a better parking barrier than a forklift. And better visitor parking, right? While we were at it, we may as well explore the grounds a little. Of course this all had to be done no later than the weekend before, right? I’ll take Nell and Cindy, and we’ll just get a hotel room down in Birmingham for the weekend.
Mom wasn’t real enthusiastic about that. She didn’t refuse, though. She just insisted that we had to come back Sunday evening. We had school! I went out of my way to never ask Mr. Jeffreys what he thought. Cindy just told me that her mother had authorized it and that was that. I told Elaine that I had to go work this weekend, and I’d probably be gone most of the next weekend, too.
Once me and Cindy and Nell started talking about it, though, it occurred to us that maybe we could spend some time at UAB’s hospital that weekend, healing people who are about to die or maybe have lost the use of a limb and no one knows why. Yes, I wanted to make 2nd Level Footman, but I had to enter Portals and get my experience while risking my life. And everyone else’s lives, of course. If I had to choose between us I think I’d be better off if Cindy made 2nd Level Healer. Saving people’s lives and helping them live better was just gravy beside her getting free experience she didn’t have to risk dying for.
I sent Dr. Subba a text asking her to call me when she had a couple of minutes (not during school hours!). When she called, I admitted that I knew nothing of teaching hospitals, but ... We had a Healer. She wasn’t very powerful, but sometimes just a little help is all you need. Did UAB’s hospital ever get patients who the surgeons could save if they just had a little more time? Or patients who had gotten nerve damage somehow so their limb was still there but useless?
Our healer didn’t want to spend her life helping people with hangovers, or infected ingrown toenails. However, if there was a risky operation that could restore someone’s quality of life but with the risk of dying during the operation, perhaps a small boost when the surgeons screamed for help might, well, help. Who should we talk to, to both help people who needed it but at the same time preserve our privacy and freedom?
She said she would try to find out, and she would talk to Jim Milton about it when she knew more. And she thanked me for volunteering. Yes, I was right, sometimes it was just a matter of minutes or even seconds, and someone who could give a patient a small boost when things were going wrong could make all the difference in the world to that patient and their family.
I made sure I talked to both Cindy and Nell, but I stayed home for a couple of days after New Year’s, just doing ALPRA paperwork and getting ready to go back to school. Nell hadn’t gotten anywhere trying to find completely mechanical cameras, so I passed that up the chain to Jim. Surely a US Federal agency could find a supplier? This wasn’t for us so much as to help the rest of the world understand Dungeon World. Yeah, and to help teach new Hunters about what they would face before they actually entered their first Portal.
Those cameras wouldn’t do anything for the team that took them in and used them. THOSE people already knew what the monsters looked like. The benefit was for all the people waiting for them back on Earth.
School started up again on Wednesday the 4th. We got our report cards for the fall term on Thursday. Other than a ‘Pass’ for PE and a ‘B’ for history, I got straight ‘A’s. I felt robbed, but sure. Not worth fighting over. This term I would get an ‘exempt’ in the block for my PE grade.
School was school. What can you say? At least the schedule was right. I had Modern American History for 3rd period and study hall for last period. I could leave early if I could come up with ANY sort of job-related excuse.
Nell picked me up at home about 7 every morning and dropped me off at school, and she was waiting with all the parents when school let out. A couple of people had noticed, but no one had started talking about it yet.
Friday afternoon I had to take the bus home. Cindy’s waiting period had ended on the 4th and she wasn’t going to wait another week. Nell was going to pick up Cindy at her school, take her home to change clothes and grab whatever she needed for the weekend, then come get me. She had reserved two rooms at a hotel in Birmingham not far from the BTF.
She said there was a hotel only a block away from the BTF, really just across the tracks, but it wasn’t a very nice area so she’d gone with a ‘Relax Inn’ on US-11, or 1st Ave North, about a mile away just before it went under I-20 ... There was another one across the street that cost less, but they wouldn’t promise her that we’d get two connected rooms. That was important. If she had to come to my room in the middle of the night and tell me to turn the TV down, she shouldn’t have to go out into the hall and wake everyone else up yelling at me.
Of course you’re right, Nell. Good thinking and planning ahead!
Well, when we got there the Relax Inn was a ‘motel’, not a ‘hotel’, with all the room doors opening onto a walkway open to the parking lot. You could park your car in front of your room, if you were on the first floor. We were on the second floor, so it didn’t matter where we parked. Yes, our two rooms had a connecting door.
It was actually two doors, one on either side of the doorway. Each door could only be locked or unlocked from that side. It didn’t even have a doorknob on the other side, it was blanked off. You have to have the people in both rooms open their doors before you could pass through the doorway. Sure! I had one room, and I had to keep the TV down. Nell and Cindy had the other room.
It was dinner time by the time we were all checked in and moved in, and Nell recommended that we go eat before we got too involved with the night’s activities. We wouldn’t want to have to go out later. Sure. So, we all sat down and looked at our phones to see what was nearby. Pacific Seafood, sure, that was right next door and we could walk, but that looked like a drive-through. McDonalds was just down the road a couple of blocks. No.
We decided to try “Bayles Catering and Restaurant”, across the street from McDonalds. If it was good we’d make it a regular stop. If not, we wouldn’t. Well, they were closed. The sign on the door said they were open 6:30 to 2 except Sunday when they were only open for lunch.
