She led us to a room with two beds. One man was asleep, and Mr. Jeffreys was in the other one, clicking on a remote control and looking pissed. His head was bandaged up. His left arm was in a cast.
I gave it my best ‘disappointed parent’ voice. “What did you do this time?”
He looked up, dropped his shoulders, and shook his head. “Fuck you, Sam. I wasn’t doing anything.”
“Yeah, that’s what I used to say. It didn’t work for me, either. Come on, let’s have it. What did you do?”
“I hit my head and I’m having trouble remembering things. Did I tell you to fuck off, yet? If not, I’m sorry. Sam, fuck off! I was driving home when I came across a wrecked car, it looked fresh so I stopped and got out to see if anyone needed help. The driver was still in it, alive and drunk as hell. I called 911 and was trying to see what he needed when another car came around the corner and slammed into my car. I dove over the guardrail. Unfortunately, it was dark and I didn’t notice that there was a dropoff there. Maybe, that was why there was a guardrail there, but I dunno. There was no way to land gracefully because I couldn’t see my landing zone. I have a broken wrist, assorted soft tissue injuries, and a possible concussion. Oh, and my knee hurts like hell but it does still work.”
It sounded to me like his memory was pretty good! “Hmmm. Can you remember if you updated your will to leave both of your daughters to me?”
“No, I don’t remember that. I’ll have to check.”
“I’ll see if I can get a copy and make sure it gets updated.”
“My memory’s not right. Did I remember to tell you to fuck off?”
“No, I don’t think so.” I turned to the battleaxe. “He’s fine. There should be another adult in here in a minute, if you need someone to take responsibility for him.”
“We really want him to stay here overnight. He has a head injury.”
“He’s a Marine. Head injuries don’t have any effect on them.”
“Still, he’s staying the night. You can come get him in the morning.”
“Okay. Cindy, you want a few minutes?”
“Yes, please. You go somewhere else and stop upsetting him.”
I asked the battleaxe “You got a waiting area?”
She led me back to where we’d come in, and Nell was there wondering where we went. I started with “He’s fine, they’re just keeping him overnight so they can charge more.”
She told me “Sam, behave.” and asked the battleaxe “How is he?”
The battleaxe said “Really, he’s in good shape. He may have a concussion, though, so we’re keeping him overnight for observation.”
“May I go see him?”
“Certainly! I’ll show you where he is.” Then she turned to me and said “You stay here. I’ll bring them back out when they’re done.”
I gave her “What did I do?” but I was smiling while I said it. I was sure that someone would tell Nell.
I could have just sat down and watched something on my phone, but that’s not my way. There was a policeman or deputy there, so I walked over to him.
“Excuse me, I’m here to help my girlfriend see her father, who was brought in a little while ago after getting in a wreck with two other cars. Are the other two drivers here? My prospective father-in-law is a retired Marine, and he’s pretty pissed about that ‘accident’. We may need to get the other two drivers somewhere safe before he finds out where they are, or they may end up needing a lot more work.”
He got on his radio and asked for current location of the other two drivers. He got something back that sounded like “ ... held at Department 7.” He looked at me.
“I wouldn’t worry about it. All three came here, but he was the only one we could help. The other two’re being held for the coroner to verify cause before turning them over to their families.”
“He told me that the first one he could smell the alcohol.”
“He could have smelled the other one, too. Drunk driving kills more people on Saturday than any other cause around here.”
What was I supposed to say? I just shook my head. “I’ll pass on to my girlfriend and my parents that I’m not supposed to drink and drive.”
“Good call. Don’t let them do it, either.”
Well, that kinda put a damper on the evening’s festivities. I still wanted to curl up with Cindy, but I just wanted to hold her all night. She came out not too much later, saying “Dad wanted to talk to Grandma without me listening in.”
I got to hold Cindy until Nell came out.
Nell came out and walked over to us. “We can go. We need to be back here around 8 in the morning, to pick him up. I told him we weren’t going to come get him any earlier, so he could sleep on that nice comfortable bed or he could check out early and have to sleep in the waiting room. I won’t take bets on which one he does.”
We got back in the truck, and while Nell was driving us back to the hotel I was texting Mom. Mr. Jeffreys in auto accident, in hospital overnight. Then I copied that to the team and Jim. We won’t be leaving Oneonta until 10 or so. For the one to Mom, I added that we would still be going to Birmingham in the morning, just a couple hours late due to taking him with us. Cindy was doing the same thing, then talking to her mom when she called for more details.
Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees. This was a good example of what that saying meant. It wasn’t long before I was listening to Cindy explain to her mother why she hadn’t just healed her father. Uh, none of us thought of it?
Besides, if she was going to heal someone at that hospital, shouldn’t she be spending her Mana healing someone who would die without help? Her Dad just got knocked around. He’s got a concussion and a broken wrist. Mom, he’ll get better. Others need help. We’ll talk about it, okay?
Cindy finally got her mom off the phone. “What was it my Dad said earlier? ‘Family conference in my room’. We need to talk.”
I nodded. “I agree. You have a gift, and everyone who wants you to heal them will try to guilt you into doing it. ‘It’s your moral duty to heal the sick’ and all that.”
Nell understood the problem. “Yes, but can you heal everyone? That was a small hospital but they may have a hundred people in there that you could help. If I understand it correctly, you can help one person a little bit three times a day. How do you choose which three? Is it the little girl with cancer but no money who deserves to live a full life, or the rich bastard who pays you to cure his hangover? And, how do you have a private life when every sick person in the state is at your door demanding you heal them before anyone else?”
After a second she added “Lets just think about it for now so I can concentrate on driving in a strange town. In the dark. On Saturday night with drunks out.”
I pulled up my map-app and made sure she turned onto the right street for our hotel, but other than that we kept our thoughts to ourselves until we got up to my room. We still had our same rooms assigned to us, we just had to get new key-cards.
For the moment, we were all going to dump our stuff in my room. That was my decision. All three of us had our own rooms, but it didn’t seem right to barge into their rooms. Those should be their private spaces. I shouldn’t be in there with them. Me, I didn’t have private spaces, not from them. They belonged in my room with me.
When we got my door open I asked if they wanted any water, but Cindy said “No. You, naked, in the bed. I want to hold you. We’ll keep our pants on.”
What a pushy bitch! Yeah, I got naked and in the bed. Cindy and Nell both took their tops and shoes off. Cindy climbed in beside me, snuggled up on one side, and said “Now we can talk. Nell can be on the other side.”
No. “Cindy, you can give me orders. You can’t treat Nell like that. Nell, I’d be delighted for you to join us. There’s plenty of room.”
I really wasn’t thinking of sex, but with Cindy on one side, pressing those beautiful breasts into me and holding onto little Sammy, and Nell with her soft larger breasts swaying as she joined us? Yeah. Little Sammy woke right up!
Cindy stroked it, saying “That’s good, but later. Talk now.”
I waited until Nell got comfortable before I started. “We’ve got a lot of different competing sides here. There probably isn’t a middle-ground that will please everyone. All we can do is come up with a compromise that we can all live with. Me, I’m selfish. I want my Cindy to live with me. I don’t want to lose you to some hospital where they make you heal whoever they want every eight hours for the rest of your life.”
Nell said “I think that, morally, you should do what you can to help others. That’s got to be your decision, though, how much you can do without it ruining your life.”
Cindy, still playing with Sammie, said “This is too big for me. I want my husband to tell me what I should do.”
Well, if you keep playing with it like that, it won’t be too big for very long! “Your husband doesn’t know what the right answer is. And, your husband may well occasionally make a mistake. I do think that you should heal your dad, though. Maybe you wait until we get him away from the hospital? Or, do you want to go heal the children with cancer before we leave? You’d have to talk to the doctors, or at least the nurses, to find out which ones need it the most. And then, if you do that, the whole world will know that you can heal people.”
Nell, with her face on my chest just a few inches away from Cindy’s, murmured “If you want to help someone at the hospital, you may want to only do one, then one for your father, and keep one in reserve. What if we run across an accident on our way down to Birmingham? And someone is hurt so bad that they won’t last long enough for the ambulance to get there? I don’t think you should save all of them for an emergency, but you may want to keep one back.”
Cindy shook her head. “God, this is too hard.”
I had to say it. “Well, it isn’t going to be hard for long if you keep doing that. Believe me, I’ve seen how it works.”
“Cindy, dear girl, our husband is a sixteen-year-old boy and you’ve distracted him. You started it, now you need to finish it so he can think.”
“You won’t mind?”
I got in “Of course I...” before she interrupted me.
“I was talking to Grandma!”
“I would prefer you call me ‘Nell’ at times like this. And no I won’t mind. I’ll do it if you don’t want to, but it’s your fault so you should do it.”
I didn’t last long at ALL! With Cindy giving me head and Nell pressing her chest into mine I came almost in seconds. We talked for a little longer, but I fell asleep pretty quickly, too. I hope they did, too.
