The guys there at the house who were watching the Portal for the PRA had set up a cookout for us. Hamburgers, hot dogs, beans, slaw, and just about everything that people put on burgers and dogs. I was fourth on the list for a shower and I figured by then there wouldn’t be any hot water anyway, so I’d just gone back to the hose and rinsed my face and hands in ice cubes.
Eric was digging in when I got back to the tables. Some of the condiments were running low, so all the parents had clearly already had their turn. That’s fine, I can deal with it, whatever’s left is good.
I started with a double cheeseburger with mustard, lettuce, pickles, and ketsup. And some hot baked beans. And a coke. It was all good. For seconds, I had a hotdog with mustard and relish with a pile of chips.
I was talking with Jim, Nell, Mr. Jeffreys, and one of our cooks about how uncomfortable I felt eating lunch with my back to that Portal just a few feet away but still stuffing my face when Cindy came out, trying to dry her hair. Sorry, but with her arms up above her head like that the first thing I saw was what it did to her figure. Yeah, as far as I’m concerned that’s perfect.
Margie was next out. She’d said she was going to use the bathroom real fast before ‘the boys’ went in, and she’d try to hold out for the hotel room’s shower. She was the team’s treasurer, so after she had her plate I told her I’d been thinking that we should chip in for the food, and asked if that was a ‘Sam’ thing or a ‘team’ thing?
She said I might have been the one to think of it, but the whole team benefitted so the team should pay for it. I was fine with that, but Jim said that would be double-paying. ALPRA had already paid for it. Huh. “Thanks, Uncle ALPRA!”
I asked him if he’d talked to the Animal Hospital about using their scales this afternoon. Yes he had, and they’d said ‘No!’. He’d been transferred to the doctor who ran the place, and he’d said that he’d love to see our trophies, but it would be irresponsible. They had several animals boarding for assorted issues, and they had to keep possible disease vectors away from them.
Hmm. Jim was trying to work his way around finding another way to weigh all of our trophies so we didn’t end up taking them all to the BTF without admitting that he didn’t want alien monster parts contaminating his training facility. Nell pointed out that maybe UAB would help.
Yes! UAB had a teaching hospital, and I’d sold some ‘alien monster parts’ to their Pathology lab. I’d sold two RoUS parts for an outrageous sum, and then given them two Giant Centipede legs to generate goodwill. Nell had been there as my ‘driver’ and seen it happen. I should call my point of contact. After I finished eating and washed my hands again.
Since we had Jim, Mr. Jeffreys, and the entire team except George and Matt, when I got up I said we needed to decide if we were going to help GEOPRA and if so when, and also we needed to set up some ‘live fire’ practice for our Fire Mages. That should be safe at the BTF, since it used to be a steel furnace, right? Even if it turned out to not be safe, it was probably the best place to find that out.
George came out while I was heading in to use the kitchen sink, complaining about no hot water. Yeah, and it’ll be worse after Matt is done. Go get some lunch.
When I got back out there, while I was fixing another dog I heard George telling someone that we wouldn’t be going in another Portal next Saturday, that was Christmas Day and our parents weren’t going to let us go. Nor on the following Saturday, either, as that was New Year’s Day. We were taking at least a two-week break from Diving. Maybe the next Saturday after New Year’s Day.
I sat down next to Cindy, who was next to her Dad. She told me that Margie was agitating to go throw fire tomorrow. Everyone else was okay with that, but we needed to check with Matt. Matt’s father was there and he was fine with it, but we should ask Matt before we made it definite. That was fine with me, I just had to let Mom know.
Everyone agreed that we should help GEOPRA, and her dad was going to set that up as he was the only one involved who had to deal with a job. He had all of Christmas week off, since KOAM was shutting down from Christmas Eve until the day after New Year’s, so if we could do it then it would be easy. She’d let me know.
And she asked how much more I was going to pack in, looking at my plate. I told her that I didn’t want to waste any of our tax dollars. She didn’t understand that. I realized that she hadn’t been out there when Jim told us he’d paid for it with ALPRA funds, and waved at Jim to explain it. I had a hotdog in my mouth.
After I finished the dog I called the number I’d gotten from Dr. Subba. I didn’t know the lady who answered, but she didn’t have an Indian accent so I knew it wasn’t Dr. Subba. I explained who I was and why I was calling, and asked her to have Dr. Subba call me back at her convenience. The next day, Sunday, would be best for us, but we would try to work around the lab’s issues.
After that I just drank my second coke and pushed the chips around on my plate. I’d finish them, but that would be it for me. I was pretty full. Most of us were going back to the hotel for a nap, but we wanted to hear from Matt before deciding on the live-fire exercise tomorrow. Jim said we weren’t going to have a live press conference, but he did want to have a debriefing around dinner time. He had a video camera so anyone with questions later could watch it.
Matt came out a few minutes later, complaining about no hot water like he was surprised or something. We got his agreement on live-fire time tomorrow while he was loading up his plate. With that, the rest of us could take off. I wanted a hot shower at the hotel!
Nell made me sit on a sheet she’d pulled from the back seat. That was in lieu of having to sit back in the truck bed, so sure, no problem. Should we invest in a HazMat van? Or, maybe that was something ALPRA would want to set up. Something, anyway, to help any of us kids who got hurt, instead of taking some local town’s only ambulance out of service while they waited for us mangled survivors to crawl out of the Portal.
She said that Jim had gotten us permission to use the hotel’s washers, so as soon as I was in the shower my clothes and that sheet were all going away. Good thing I’ve got a spare set in my pack! I told her that as soon as we got in the room her clothes were going away, as well.
That didn’t work as well as I’d like. She took care of me as soon as we were in the room, but she had to get dressed to take all my biohazard clothes to get washed. We got some real quality time when she came back, though. I didn’t dress after my shower, and Nell got undressed again after she’d delivered my nuclear waste, and I got to do as much for her as she did for me.
Cindy had been right; Nell didn’t argue at all about being gagged while I gave her head. That was just as much fun as Cindy had been. And, it would have been difficult to keep my promise to Cindy, if Nell hadn’t taken care of me before my shower. I really wanted to jam that thing in there where it belonged and just go to town on it!
That turned into a nap. Nell was taller than me so we didn’t fit together quite as well as me and Cindy did, but I still loved holding her as we slept. I slept great with Nell, just like I had with Cindy. I slept on my back holding her. She slept half on top of me, her breasts pressed into my chest.
Was it the particular women, or was it me, or was it all women in general? Someday I’d have to run some experiments with a group of random women, seeing if who I slept with affected how well I slept. Someday when Cindy and Nell were out of the country.
Dr. Subba woke us up when she called to ask about our specimens. She was busy today, but if we could schedule something she would support us in return for a quick look at what we had. I told her that several of us had more trophies but they were all from three different Portals. We had parts from giant raccoons, giant centipedes, and giant spiders. She might be interested in the giant spiders, since they had venom.
She asked if we knew if they were toxic or not. I got to point out that I had personal experience with that and could verify it. Even just getting splashed with it hurts like hell, turns your skin black, and starts damaging your body. We were all okay now, but that was only because we had a Healer with us. We were pretty sure that not even her healing spell would have helped, if any of us had actually gotten injected. I would take it as a personal favor if she could start working on an anti-venom for it.
She wanted to verify that we had some actual venom. We’re not sure how much, but absolutely yes. Oh, and we’d also like to know what it took to get rid of it, since it was on our clothes. Would washing in hot water take care of it, or did we need to burn our clothes?
Yeah, we should have thought of that BEFORE we contaminated the hotel’s washers. Call Jim next!
I told her that, if possible, we would like to get all our trophies weighed tomorrow, since we would be in Birmingham anyway. We had two Fire Mages and we were going to the ALPRA training facility to let them practice throwing their fire, and it would be awfully convenient if we could go by her lab when we were done. Or first, if she wanted.
She countered with wanting to watch our Mages throw fire. Uh, I think that’s okay, but I’d better ask first. I’ll call you back.
I called Jim while sitting on a hotel bed naked, with Nell laying beside me trying to give me head again. She was going to succeed before long, but it wasn’t urgent.
First, the possible crisis. It was possible that we were complete morons. We had the hotel washing our filthy clothes. I’d been talking to the Pathology doctor at UAB, and it occurred to me that that poison had started to damage us even just splashed on our skin. Did we need to quarantine all the washers we were using? It was to be hoped that simple hot water and detergent would denature the poison, but we didn’t know that yet. He said he’d try to find out which washers they were using, and get them to not use them for anything else until we found out if that was a problem or not.
Second, the doctor at UAB’s Pathology lab wanted to examine our trophies in exchange for weighing them. I’d asked her to see if it would be possible to develop an anti-venom shot for Giant Alien Spider bites, and she’d countered with wanting to go see Margie and Matt practice throwing fire. Was that allowed?
He said that HE wanted to watch it, and so would Ron and Rick, so it wasn’t like only Weapons could be there. On the other hand, this was why ALPRA had set up the BTF, to keep the dangerous things we did away from the general public. We would keep the public out but if I wanted to invite special guests I could. I’d be responsible for them. ALPRA would not be held liable for any trouble non-Weapons got in when Weapons were doing dangerous things inside the BTF. That would all be on Sam McGowan.
I had to let Nell finish before I could do anything else. Then, I had to wait until I recovered before I could call Dr. Subba back and sound intelligent. I wanted to just go back to sleep, but it would be dinner time soon so I put some pants on and moved to a chair, then had Nell sit on my lap so I could do something fun while I recovered.
When I called the doctor back, I had to admit that I didn’t have times yet for either Fire practice or her lab, but she was allowed to come watch as long as she behaved. ALPRA had set the BTF up because we did crazy things and we didn’t want the public endangered. She said the lab would be open after 9AM, and asked me to let her know when I knew more. I promised I would.
Going back to bed with an attractive naked older woman who liked me seemed like my best next move, but someone I knew would be upset if I spent all day and all night with another woman. It took me a minute to figure out what to do. I texted Mr. Jeffreys and said I didn’t want to wake Cindy up if she was napping. I guess he showed his phone to her, because I got an immediate text from Cindy saying they were down in the lobby talking.
I showed that to Nell and told her I should go down there after a quick rinse. While I was setting the water temperature she called out to me that she was going to her room for the same thing, and she’d meet me down there.
Matt and Margie wanted to get started as early in the morning as possible, as it would take a long time to recover their Mana once they ran out. We agreed to meet at the BTF at 8 in the morning. Jim said he’d have someone there to watch the counter, and I had to be there if I was bringing a guest.
I thought that was a great intro to the next discussion. Most of us had trophies, and we needed them photographed, measured, and weighed if we wanted to auction them. My contact at UAB was willing to let us use her lab tomorrow for that, but she had her own unreasonable demands. She wanted to examine our trophies, and she wanted to go watch our Fire Mages practice throwing fire.
Jim had agreed that I could invite her, but I was responsible for her and ALPRA wasn’t going to cover her expenses if she got hurt. So, I was thinking that we should go to the BTF first, then once Margie and Matt were out of Mana we could all go to UAB and get our trophies weighed. I’d also asked her if she could start looking into developing an anti-venom shot.
I think everyone on the team looked up at that. Yeah, knowing that we had a chance even if we did get injected would make us all a lot happier. I had no idea how difficult that would be or how long it would take, but if it was possible the sooner they started the sooner we’d have it. The System was doing its best to strip away all the advantages that our civilization had developed for our soldiers. We had to go into the Portals and fight on its terms with weapons it gave us, and we needed to put our civilization to work figuring what we could take in with us.
And, I didn’t know what Dr. Subba’s specialty was, but I figured that UAB would be delighted to get a chance to work on an antidote for Giant Alien Spider bites.
After that we got into the debriefing and our lessons-learned discussion. Eric said that this had gone FAR better than the first time he went into that Portal. One Fire Mage was good. Two Fire Mages just naturally made everything better!
