‘Missile 1-4’ Recap - If you read them just skip this

Hi, I’m Samuel Alfred McGowan. Sam or ‘SAM the Missile’ to my buddies. I’m a ‘Hunter’. If this is the first one of these that you’ve seen, welcome to my journal. I’ve cleaned it up some, because I wrote all this back when I was 16.

I’m 23 now, and I can tell just re-reading this that I’m not the same person I was back then. I used to be just another useless teenager, another run-of-the-mill American high school kid. Something happened, though, and I had to grow up kinda quick. A lot faster than I wanted to, that’s for sure!

That something was the Portals. Let’s see how far I can condense this and still make sense.

One night? Early morning? We’re not sure. We are sure that everyone involved was asleep. That may even have been one of the selection criteria, only people who were fast asleep were eligible. Or, maybe whoever was behind it just made sure everyone selected WAS asleep. How could we tell the difference?

Anyway, one night something happened. The next morning, a bunch of people woke up with full-sized medieval weapons hanging in the air above them. Big, scary, sharp. Definitely sharp. As soon as they were touched, they disappeared again like they had never been there. It wasn’t just something they dreamed, though, because people being people, a lot of them had cuts on their hands where they’d reached out to touch the shiny sharp part of their sword or axe or whatever.

And, every one of them was in pain. Every injury they had ever had was acting up, like your old shoulder injury was telling you there was a bad storm coming. It made the news, and it became clear pretty soon that it had happened to a lot of people all over the world. There were probably over a million world-wide. That sounds like a lot, but with over eight billion people on the planet, that was only “one in 8000” people.

Those chosen said the pain was excruciating. It didn’t last long, though, before it was just an ache. It was no big deal, and within a few days they all felt better. Better than they ever had felt, actually. They were all becoming the healthiest they could be, as if their bodies were becoming optimized. Nobody really complained, but it got noticed.

Then, a few days after they all were at perfect health, some ‘Portals’ appeared. They were simple glowing globes hanging in the air, giving off a little static electricity like Van de Graff generators. There weren’t that many, but they were obvious to everyone.

That was the first oddity, besides their appearance. People could see them, but technology could not. Cameras did not see them. As near as we could tell, neither could animals. People claimed to have seen birds flying through them. And, if you tried to touch them, there was nothing there.

Which was good, because one rule that quickly became obvious was that they only appeared over concrete. In a parking lot, on a sidewalk, in the middle of a road. You could walk through them. You could drive through the ones on roads.

Those caused accidents, of course, when drivers tried to avoid them. Other drivers had to go through them, and ... nothing happened. Still, governments quickly surrounded all the ones they could find with caution tape, traffic cones, concrete barriers.

It wasn’t long before some people who tried to touch them disappeared. Well, THAT started the hysteria all over again. In many cases, the person who had disappeared popped back out again an hour or two later. They all told the same story.

They had gone to a stone room with stairs going downward. Their ‘weapon’ was hanging in the air in front of them. This time, it was real and they could pick it up. There was nothing else in the room except for the stairs. It was clear that they were supposed to take their weapon and go down the stairs.

At the bottom there was a black wall or curtain which disappeared when they touched it, and they were in a different world. With monsters. Giant ants or rats or crabs. They had killed all the monsters, and eventually when they killed the last one, two more stairways had appeared.

One went up and one went down. Well, that was obvious. Down went to the next level. Probably harder. Up went back to Earth.

Every single person who came back said the same thing. They had climbed the ‘up’ stairs and gone through the Portal again and they were back on Earth where they’d been.

Some of the conclusions were obvious, right? Everyone could see those Portals, but only those who had been granted weapons could enter the Portals. Granted by who? No one knew. People started calling it the ‘System’ for lack of a better word.

And, the vast majority of people -they were already getting called ‘Weapons’- never came back. Those who did were often injured, so it was clear that the rest of the Weapons had simply not survived meeting their monsters. Of all the Weapons who entered the Portals those first few days, only about one in ten ever came back out.

Governments panicked. If some people could go in, then probably some monsters could come out. And, no one knew what was inside the ones that no one had returned from. All over the world, every Portal they could find got surrounded by soldiers, walls, fences, land mines.

Not every Portal was found immediately, though. And, the Weapons were mostly self-starters, the sort of people who would have become adventurers, mercenaries, Vikings, or freebooters in an earlier age. The System, whatever it was, had chosen well. The Weapons WANTED to go in those Portals, get their weapons, and kill all the monsters. In many countries, when a Weapon found a Portal, they didn’t tell the government about it if they could hide it. They went in, got their weapon, cleared the Level, and came out.

And then, went in a second time when the Portal let them. And a third time. And took some friends who also had weapons with them, to make it easier and safer and more fun. They shared their discoveries. They discovered more rules. A Weapon who knew about a secret Portal could enter it every ten days. However, that was a limit on the Portal, not the Weapon. For the Weapons, the limit was five days. A Weapon could not enter any Portal until five days after their last ‘Dive’. A Weapon who knew about TWO secret Portals could alternate between the two every five days.

We couldn’t help but compare this whole thing to a video game. Was Earth nothing more than a ‘reality show’ for some advanced alien civilization? Now, with real reality?

Up to six Weapons could go in together. Oh, and before long the word spread that you could only do that first level five times. The sixth time you entered that particular Portal, you found yourself in a different place. There were more monsters and they were bigger, stronger, faster. The word spread FAST that Level Two wasn’t for the marginal teams. They needed to go find another Portal after five runs through their original one.

Time passed. More Portals appeared. These, now, could be anywhere. In a forest. On a river islet. In a cave. In an apartment. On a building’s roof. It became clear that their color meant something. Pinks and ‘Violets’ weren’t too hard. Dark Blues or ‘Indigos’ were more deadly. ‘Blues’ were nightmares. ‘Greens’ were just impossible. Roy G Biv, right? The colors of the rainbow.

Then, a disaster. Or, maybe, a warning. One night, right at midnight, whenever local midnight was, a whole bunch of those Portals spewed out a whole bunch of monsters. In many cases, the surrounding soldiers killed them all and went back to sleep.

In most cases, though, either the soldiers DIDN’T win that fight, or there were no soldiers watching the Portal in the first place. For those portals, all the monsters went looking for prey. Food, loot, whatever. Most of them were giant Earth insects or animals, and they were looking for food.

In most cases, the most convenient food they could find were the humans they ran across. It took several days, in some cases, to run down all those man-eating giant rats and spiders and crabs. The casualty bill was horrific, and in just about every nation there was a public uprising against the Government which had allowed this to happen, to let those monsters eat their wife, their mother, their children.

The riots got a lot worse when it came out that only those Portals which had never been entered had done this. Well, only those Portals which had never had a Weapon enter and then come out again. The ones where no one had returned from had participated in the ‘outbreak’. The ones that Divers had returned from didn’t contribute to the outbreak. Most governments had claimed the Portals, making it illegal for anyone to enter them if they weren’t in the government, the police, or the army. And then they hadn’t done anything with most of them.

Their greed in not letting the public have access, but then their laziness in not entering themselves, had gotten MY GRANDMOTHER (my wife, my daughter, my brother... ) EATEN! ALIVE! There were quite a few countries which, um, changed governments after that.

It wasn’t really that bad, in the US. Or, any other nation which had an armed public. For every Portal which vomited out twenty-five monsters, there were several hundred veterans, hunters, and Second Amendment wackos with rifles. Almost every group of monsters got stopped within hours of the alarm going out. We lost an awful lot of grocery-store stockers and all-night gas station attendants first, though.
