Chapter 5
Millions of stars filled the night sky as Yzzy looked up. The first week that she had found herself in Choteau had passed quickly, where every day was a new experience that also built up on the previous day. Experiences that were new as well as common happened, and she found herself happy to participate and learn.
Her friendship with Leona grew slowly, cautiously. And the woman stopped seeing Yzzy as a threat to her relationship with Ryan. Soon, when time allowed, after work at the ranch and main house, the two were seen in town as Yzzy was introduced to people and participated in activities.
The Reverend and Sarah Smith welcomed her at Sunday service and Yzzy found herself surrounded by curious people at the afternoon pot-luck being questioned about what life was like in ‘exotic’ California. Most of them had lived in or around Choteau all their life, and when Yzzy described what her own life was like, and the experiences she had, it was almost an alien concept to them. She might as well have told them that she lived on Mars.
“If you live in a big city, how can you ride a horse?” “The school I attended when I was younger had a program where we learned to not only ride, but how to take care of horses!”
“Are you close to your family? Do they also live in Sacramento?” Sadly, I’m pretty much an orphan, but through school and work I have many close friends.
“Do you work at a big law firm to do you practice alone?” “I work at a firm. I’m sort of a small fish in a big lake there. But it is interesting.” When a follow up question of “Can you tell us anything about a case you worked on?” came along, Yzzy knew she had to be careful due to confidentiality clauses. She did share one piece of information that made people smile. “I worked on a Family Trust and a provision was set up my the holder that funds be set aside so that all of his grandchildren could go to a local Baskin Robbins, once a month, and get a giant ice cream sundae!” Everyone thought that was sweet of him to do that.
And then the big question. “Are you dating anyone? Lots of nice, single, men here!” This often happened. It seemed that when women who were married or at least partnered with someone found a single woman, they made it a mission to set her up with someone. “I do have a special someone I spend time with, but both of us have demanding careers and don’t get to see each other as often as we want.” Francine stepped up at this point. “Okay everyone! Leave her alone! Besides, she is returning to California soon, so no flings are going to take place. Melissa, I know you are still looking to fix your brother up with anyone who has a pulse! Not going to happen!” Yzzy stage whispered to Melissa, “Sorry. I’m a lawyer. We’re heartless. No pulse!” Laughter.
It was Wednesday night. Earlier that day, Yzzy rode up into the foothills with Ryan, his brother and the two hands. They would be starting the process of bringing down about a dozen horses and almost a hundred free range cattle. The other ladies at the ranch stayed home to keep an eye on things. The mare she was given to ride was a dark reddish brown and very gentle. Perfect for someone who had some riding experience, but still needed help. They rode up, started the process of gathering the animals and hobbled the horses for the night so they could quickly get started in the morning to return home. After that, each animal wuld be sorted to either be sold or kept another year.
“You looked right at home on Punkin,” Ryan smiled, standing next to Yzzy as she looked up at the sky.
“She’s really gentle and she seems to have a sixth sense for where to go. A little pressure with my knees and she went where I wanted.”
“Dad trained all our horses that way,” he sighed and then was quiet a moment. “I think Dad would have liked you a lot. And I think you would have liked him also.”
“I’m sorry. I know you miss him.” The previous year, a fast spreading cancer had taken the man within two months of diagnosis.
“Thank God he made sure to insure himself. Mortgage Term Life policies cleared the note on the ranch and personal policies made sure mom was set for money. Cameron and I vowed we will make sure that Red Wolf stays viable.”
Speaking of Cameron, the man had brought out a small guitar so everyone could relax around the campfire as they finished a meal and would soon make ready to sleep under the stars. After a rousing rendition of ‘Green Grow, the Rushes, Oh!’ Yzzy asked for the guitar.
“It’s been a while since I played, so I’m rusty. Please don’t laugh.” She ran her fingers along the neck of the guitar, plucking a few notes. Closing her eyes, she began to sing...
“Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam, and I’ll show you a house full of shit ... It smells really bad, it makes me feel sad, and the neighbors are having a fit! Home, home full of shit! My housekeeping staff all did quit! We got methane gas, from big, bovine ass, just pray that a match isn’t lit!”
Putting the guitar down, she smiled to herself. “I’m sorry. I don’t remember the rest.”
The four men started laughing at the silly version of the song. “Where on earth did you learn that?” one of the hands asked.
“The school I attended when I was younger. We would sometimes go camping overnight in the Redwoods. You get a bunch of teenage girls together and they are NOT all sweet and innocent. That was pretty tame for some of the stuff we sang!”
They awoke at sunrise. Yzzy felt quite refreshed, even after sleeping under the stars. A quick wash, food and they gathered the animals to move. Punkin was sure footed as she made her way down the hill and when riding conditions allowed, walked next to Bingo, a large black gelding. The fact Ryan was astride Bingo allowed him to talk with his guest.
“How did you and Leona get together?”
“She was just sort of always around. Her parents split up around the time she was eleven and she came out from Bozeman to live with her grandparents. Not sure what happened to her mom and dad. Anyway, all the kids in town sort of hang out together, if they are in the same general age range. You met Amelia and Carl Dawson. They have their own group of friends that they all run around with. Leona ended up with the group I hung out with. I guess she decided I was good for her and she started to spend time focusing on me. It was just understood that we were together. We probably would be married by now, but things got sidetracked when Dad passed away. I was told that next April, there will be a wedding. Mom is working with Leona and her grandmother, Papa Bears wife. I was told to stay quiet and show up at the correct time and location. Oh, and wear a nice suit.” He looked up. “It would be great if you could attend.”
“Let me know when you pick a date,” Yzzy grinned. “I can be here early to help her friends make sure she has a proper ‘hen party’ and all that.” They rode for several minutes in silence. “Do you love her?”
“What sort of question is that?”
“Humor me. I’m a lawyer. I’m pretty good at reading people. I look at the two of you and things sort of seem like you’re almost just going through the motions. If I’m wrong, I’m sorry if I upset you.”
Ryan took a moment to think of how to phrase his answer. “Yes, I love her. But i’m nt IN LOVE with her. It’s more like sometimes I look at her and see her as a sweet cousin, and not a life partner.”
“Kissin’ Cousins!” Yzzy giggled.
“It’s almost a matter of practicality. For every five men out in this part of the country, there are three women. So the ratio is in their favor. Sure, growing up, I wanted a marriage like I saw with my parents. Dad got lucky. He enlisted in the Marines and did his tour and came home. On the way, he went to visit the family of his best friend in Iowa and met my mother. Mom says it was love at first sight and before anyone knew it, she was a ranchers wife and on her way to becoming a mother. But I’m being practical. Leona is someone I feel I can be happy with and have a family. Cameron met Nichole at a conference about feed supplements for cattle, if you can believe that. She called herself a ‘billboard bunny’ because she didn’t know anything about the product, but stood at the display table in a pretty dress to draw the attention of men to come over and look at the product.”
“So he went looking for better feed and came home with a wife?”
“Pretty much,” Ryan laughed. “They met on a Friday and eloped the following Tuesday. You have no idea how upset Mom was! She had wanted to plan a wedding for her oldest son. We did have a party though. I think that’s why she wants a big to-do for Leona and I.”
“I don’t have that option. I have no family.” Not that long ago, Yzzy had tried to see if she cold find any information about her mother. There had never been anything about who her father might have been. Sadly, the last time any official information about the woman was available was for a bench warrant on a failure to appear, concerning a shoplifting charge when Yzzy was fifteen.
“You have us, Ryan stated. “Mom loves you. Leona is warming up to you. I think you’re fantastic.” He looked ahead to where his brother was riding point and over to the hands, each on one side of the group as they all made their was forward. “Yzzy, you have a lot to offer. You’re a strong woman. Emotionally as well as physically. You’re smart. You took yourself on a journey that started as a street waif to a successful businesswoman. Not at all a ‘shrinking violet’ or a mouse. You’re beautiful. Your looks are exotic and dare I say it, erotic. A man, or a woman, could easily fall in love with you and want to build a life together. I know you say that Annette is special to you, and I believe it. I also understand why you told us about her, so to calm Leona down before she got upset. Sort of diffuse a bomb before you had to decide if it was the red wire or the blue one, before shit blew up. I’m going to be a jerk here and ask YOU a question.”
Yzzy sort of had an idea of what she was going to be asked.
“What is it that YOU want in life? You are at a point that you might be thinking options and will need to make a few tough decisions. Right now, out here, this is just a fun escape. But soon you will be returning to California. What do you want from life?”
