The lunch bell rang on Tuesday. Quinn left his physics class happy to be halfway done with the day. His mind felt restless this morning, like he’d forgotten to turn the stove off, or he’d left something at home. Just that little nagging feeling that something was wrong, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. It was probably nothing, as it usually was. Likely he’d forgotten to take the garbage out or something.
As he walked down the hallway to grab some lunch, he passed Miguel and Darius. The two star athletes gave him a grin and a nod, a small but significant acknowledgement of their newfound acquaintanceship. Quinn returned the gesture; he walked just a little bit prouder that he shared a secret with the two of them.
Quinn was fairly average, which mostly made him invisible to most people. He wasn’t drooled over like the jocks at the school, nor was he picked on like the nerds. He drifted around to different cliques at school, the ones most people don’t even notice exist. He had a few friends in the band, a couple of acquaintances on the track team, and a few more from what was left of the arts programs. He was never particularly close with anyone, preferring to keep people at arm’s length. He kind of liked being a social drifter, not tied to any specific group. It made him feel like a lone rogue or knight-errant from the medieval fantasy novels he loved so much.
Still though, high school was a dangerous land, filled with beasts and beauties alike. If he needed the services of those two gallant warriors, he suspected they might aid him if circumstances were dire. He felt there to be an unspoken pact, a bond if you will, amongst the survivors of the great Whiteout. For they had triumphed over adversity and shared a dark secret made of a magic potion.
Quinn’s fantasy was snapped when the lunch lady asked for his order. He ordered some fries and moved on down the line to receive them, his mind returned to the world in his head. He liked it there, a place he could get lost in, which was constructed from the numerous books he’d read. He could be a dashing hero or a silent assassin, instead of the slightly pudgy curly-haired person that he was. He took his food and headed into the cafetorium as he searched for a place to sit. Off in a far corner, he spotted Andrea by herself as usual. With her laptop open and headphones on, she munched on what looked like a plain-bread sandwich.
“Anyone sitting here?” he asked as he approached an empty seat across from her. She looked up, annoyed that someone was bothering her, until she saw it was Quinn.
“No. Are you sure you want to sit here?” she asked as she looked around the mostly crowded room. She wasn’t used to anyone sitting within three tables of her, let alone wanting to talk to her.
“Of course, why wouldn’t I?”
“Because you have better people to talk to, and well, I’m not much of a people person.”
“I think you’re more sociable than you think,” he said with a warm smile. He popped a few fries in his mouth. They were soggy and coated in ketchup; just the way he liked them.
“Whatcha up to? Playing that game you like?” Quinn asked as he watched Andrea’s eyes occasionally leave the screen to keep an eye on him.
“Yeah, there was a sequel that just dropped, but it looks exactly the same. It’s kind of bullshit.”
“Oh, that sucks. What did they change?” Quinn stood up and moved around the table and sat beside Andrea as he looked at the screen in front of her. He had no idea what he was looking at, but he wanted to learn more about it.
Andrea felt a little weird, with Quinn now seated beside her. She looked up from her monitor and couldn’t help but see a few eyes look their way from some of the other tables. She had always been the weird freak loner with the ratty clothes, and now, suddenly, she had someone talking to her. She wondered what the gossip around the school would be. She’d already overheard some the previous day about their group who’d been trapped in the school overnight. It was all bullshit since the truth was wilder than anything anyone could have come up with.
Andrea swallowed hard on her dry bread sandwich, “Well, beyond the PVP changes from 6v6 to 5v5, they supposedly improved the graphics and foliage of the trees, but I have all the settings maxed and can’t tell a thing.”
She moved her character around a small medieval village. Quinn just watched as she interacted with various characters; a blacksmith, a fisherman, and some strange guy that seemed to be bent over crying. He couldn’t hear any sound, as it was connected to her headphones, but read the text as it popped up on the screen.
“Are these real people?” he asked, not knowing how the game worked.
“These? No, these are NPCs. If you see the people running around with numbers over their heads, those are other players or adventurers, as the game calls them. Look, here’s Greg. He’s kind of a glitchy NPC. His textures and clothing look exactly the same as the first game. This is complete bullshit. They could have at least given him his wife back.”
“You really like this game, huh? How much does it cost?” Quinn asked as he watched her accept a quest to gather some sheep.
“What? Why do you care? I’ve just been ranting about it for the past few minutes,” she snapped at him. Her voice crackled with an intensity he’d not heard since they met in the library.
“I don’t know,” Quinn muttered, his eyes moved to her face and then back to the screen. “You just seem so passionate about it. Outside of my books and physics, I don’t think I care about anything to get that worked up about. I just thought it might be fun to try.”
Andrea stopped and looked at her hands on the keyboard, a feeling of shame washed over her. She was defensive about money, having always been picked on for the used and ratty clothes she wore. She thought he was going to say something about wasting her limited money on it. She was so used to the mean comments that she tried to become invisible.
Everyone thought she was poor, which was partially true. Her dad worked as a laborer on a farm. It was hard work for very little money, but he had no education or skills beyond that. Her mom left years ago and went to find herself, supposedly, so there wasn’t always steady income coming into the household. She learned basic coding in school and in short order, surpassed her teacher’s abilities.
She learned to sell her talents to individuals online, usually to create cheats for various multiplayer games. She used the money to supplement the household income. When she decided she needed to buy a new laptop, she scrimped and saved what she could until she could buy the highest-end laptop she could find. Andrea viewed it as an investment in her future and spent big on it. What the rest of the students didn’t know was that her laptop cost almost as much as a low-end new car.
“It’s $70, but I think there’s a free trial for new accounts,” her voice quieted again. It was barely discernible over the noise of the lunchroom cacophony.
“Ok, I might look it up. I didn’t mean to bother you,” Quinn stood up to leave her to her game. He hadn’t meant to upset her. He just wanted to get to know her better.
Her hand reached out and touched his arm. It stopped him in his tracks, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean...” she sighed, “ ... I get a lot of crap, and I’m not used to people wanting to talk to me in the real world.”
“It’s ok, don’t worry about it.”
“It’s not, though. I’ve felt weird ever since that night, you know? Yesterday, I threatened Chuck Rodgers when he was beating up Warren. I don’t know why I did that, but I did it.”
Quinn looked shocked, “I heard something about it. That was YOU?”
“Yeah, for some reason, it actually worked, and Chuck left him alone, not that Warren thanked me or anything. He just took off. I just feel edgier now, though. Do you think that stuff has something to do with it?” She chose her words carefully as there were still people around that might overhear if they tried.
“I don’t know. Do you think Warren and Brittany can actually improve that stuff?”
“I hope so, although if fighting bullies is a side effect, I think we could keep it,” replied Andrea with a laugh. Quinn couldn’t help but notice her face lit up as she laughed, something he wished she’d do more often. It made her face glow in the light from the monitor.
“Want some of my fries?” Quinn offered as he asked her more about the game she played. She ate a few and then offered to guide him through how to play ... if he decided to download it.
Students shuffled and rushed through the halls to catch buses or just to escape after a long day of school. Karla had to move upstream of the crowd as she headed to find her friend Brittany to see what her plan was after school. They hadn’t really had a chance to hang out much since Brittany and Warren began their work on that gas stuff on Monday. It normally would have pissed her off to be abandoned for a guy, but she knew they were doing something important.
This experiment of theirs wasn’t a big deal to her personally. She could get any guy she wanted whenever she wanted. But she couldn’t deny the wild carnal appeal of what had happened that Friday night. Karla had slept with several guys in the school, which was pretty well known by most, but nothing compared to her experience that night.
Despite her reputation, Karla wasn’t easy. She liked that reputation and the attention that it brought to her socially. If everyone thought she was risqué and sexual, they were most likely to follow her. Guys wanted to look at her, and girls wanted to be her. She couldn’t help it; not that she wanted to anyway. She even planted a few false rumors that she slept with more people than was true. To boost their own reputations, the guys just went with it, thereby validating the initial rumors. She knew how to play the game, and she played it well. She was already getting advertisement opportunities that would usually be offered to accounts twice her size. They knew to get in early on an emerging influencer.
As Karla approached Brittany’s locker, she started to hear raised voices amongst the clatter and chatter of the hallway. She easily recognized her friend but couldn’t make out the other male voice until she got closer. It was Chuck, Brittany’s now ex-boyfriend, flanked by a couple of his football buddies.
“Why can’t you just be mature about this!” Brittany said, her voice exasperated.
“I don’t see why it’s your business or why you care,” Chuck replied with visible confusion, not that it took much to confuse him. If it wasn’t a football play, it wouldn’t register. After the two broke up, Karla couldn’t help but wonder how he and her friend stayed together for so long.
Karla couldn’t help but jump in, “What’s going on here? Britt, is everything ok?”
“Now you’ve got HER involved,” Chuck said derisively. Karla didn’t even look at him, not after he dumped her friend. She just looked to Brittany for an answer.
“I’m trying to get him to stop beating up on Warren, his face was bruised up the other day and he’s even worse today,” Brittany said as she looked to her friend for support.
“That little bitch can’t even fight his own fights, now he’s sending girls to pick his battles,” one of Chuck’s meathead friends said.
“Yeah, now he’s got your skirt to hide behind, too. Little panty waste,” Chuck quickly added, a smug look on his face.
“All I’m asking is for you to leave him alone, you’re better than this Charles.” Brittany’s use of his full first name seemed to strike a small chord with him. Despite everything, Chuck did care for her. He wouldn’t have broken up with her if his friends hadn’t pushed him into it, but he also knew they were headed in different directions.
His tone changed to be more cordial, “I’m sorry Britt. I don’t know why it matters to you now. I know you got locked in with that dork and it seems you had some Breakfast Club moment or something, but no one’s really getting hurt, ok? It’s just guys having fun.”
“Well, he’s NOT having fun. I’m just asking you to let him be, ok?” Brittany said, not backing down.
“Ugh! Maybe,” Chuck said, as he looked frustrated, “Ok, why don’t we talk about it at the game tomorrow? You’re going, right?”
“Chuck! Yo, what are you doing?” his friend on the right admonished.
“Shut up, Tony!” he snapped back. “What do you say, Britt?”
“I’ll think about it. I have to get going. I’ll text you later when I’ve decided. Karla, let’s go.” Brittany grabbed Karla’s arm and started to pull her away. They weren’t out of earshot when Karla overheard one thing that made her turn around.
“Damn, Chuck, first that freak and now he’s got to your bitch, too?”
“You should break his teeth, bro.”
“Watch your mouth, Tiny Dick. What freak? Who is he talking about?” Karla said angrily. She didn’t like hearing her friend be insulted by anyone, let alone those two dickless wonders.”
A little surprised when Karla got in his face, Chuck replied, “I don’t know her name. That poor, welfare-looking chick who’s always on her computer. She threatened me on Monday.”
Brittany and Karla looked at each other. “ANDREA?!”
“Yeah, it was weird. I didn’t think she knew how to talk,” Chuck replied as his two buddies started to walk away. “I gotta go, text me later.”
The two girls watched as he ran off with his two friends, likely coming up with an excuse to make himself seem tough. Guys are such simple, dull creatures, Karla thought to herself. She and Brittany turned towards the science lab where Warren was likely waiting to continue their work.
“What the hell was that all about?” Karla asked, after they turned a corner and the crowd had dissipated.
“Warren’s been getting beat up lately and I thought I’d try to stop it. I don’t think I helped though,” said Brittany. Karla noticed her friend looked a little dejected that her attempt failed.
“Well yeah!” Karla replied, “He’s been doing that to him since Freshman year, why would it matter now?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Britt, you’re my best friend and I love you but seriously? There’s no way you’ve been so blind not to see Chuck kick the crap out of certain people in this school. Warren especially! I’m shocked no one’s come in with a gun to get back at him yet.”
This was one of Brittany’s problems. She was so focused on school that she never really noticed what was going on around her. A bomb could go off during a test and she’d keep on writing. But even then, it was still astounding that Brittany didn’t know about her boyfriend’s malicious streak.
“I swear I didn’t know. Now I feel terrible!”
“Maybe do something nice for him maybe? If you actually care,” replied Karla as they entered the science lab, inside was Warren and Ms. Linda. She looked at her friend and could see tears welling up in her eyes. She couldn’t help but wonder if there was something more going on with this after-school chemistry stuff that her friend wasn’t telling her about.
“Sorry I’m late. Got held up,” Brittany said as she dropped her stuff off at a table and joined Warren in setting up some equipment. From the backroom, a small cage emerged with a couple of white mice that were put in an enclosed cabinet.
“Where did you get those things?” Karla asked. She wasn’t knowledgeable in science at all. She was more of a social science person.
“I picked them up at a pet store, male and female,” Ms. Linda said as she gathered up her things. “They aren’t true lab mice, but it’s the best I could do. Figured this was a better life for them than being fed to a hungry snake.”
Karla yelled, “Gross!”
“You two good from here?” Ms. Linda asked as she put on her coat and headed to the door.
“Yes ma’am,” Warren and Brittany replied. They set up various chemical contraptions that Karla couldn’t begin to comprehend.
“Alright, you two have fun but remember, not TOO much fun.” Linda then turned to Karla, “Wanna walk me out?”
“Sure ... Linda,” Karla responded with a grin. It still felt weird to call a teacher just by their first name, but under the circumstances, and after what the two of them did, it just made sense.
A look over at Brittany before she walked away, Karla knew her friend was lost in ‘science mode’ and she wouldn’t get much of a conversation anyway. She turned and followed the young teacher out the door, something the two of them had done every night for the past four days since the Monday lunch meeting. It had become their little tradition, after Karla walked Brittany to the lab. They tended to talk about school or small things, nothing personal, as there were still a few people milling about the school.
“How was your day today, Karla?” Linda asked, as they walked down the quiet halls.
“Ok. Some English homework and stuff, but nothing too bad. How about you? Good classes?”
“Yeah, had a scuffle break out in my freshman class but that’s nothing new.”
The two chuckled, it was friendly and jovial, but both knew it was a little awkward. Both of them remembered their time together in the kitchen, and neither had really addressed it since. Still, they carried on their friendly banter as they passed the first set of doors to the exit. There was just the cold beyond the glass and metal of the next doors. The same as those they’d just passed.
