Chapter 6

Tom Granger didn’t have any complaints about how things were going for him. He enjoyed going to work and facing the daily challenges. The complement to his enjoyment of work was his lady friends who provided him with a delightful social life. The shock of Jason’s visit when he handed Tom that check gave Tom financial security.

His feeling that things were going well for him may have hit a speed bump. He thought that because during the weekly staff meeting. Colton Ackerman, the CEO asked Tom to stay after the meeting ended, saying he needed to discuss an item with him.

Treat her like you would any other new employee and don’t be concerned that she is my daughter. If she cannot do the work, you need to tell her that. If after a sufficient number of warnings, she doesn’t clean up her act, you can show her the door. I will not interfere in any way with you doing that. I wanted you to know my feelings about Myla working here, and how you should treat her.”

Tom told Colton he appreciated what Colton said and told him he would treat Myla just like he would treat any other employee. He knew that was what Colton wanted to hear, but did Colton really think Tom would have the nerve to show Myla the door? Never in a million years thought Tom. Then again, a lot would depend on Myla’s attitude and performance. Tom could only hope he wouldn’t be put into a difficult position where he had to decide on Myla’s continued employment.

Back in his office, Tom told his executive assistant Corrine, about the new hire starting Monday. He knew that only time would tell how it would be with Myla working here.

Tom picking up his mail at home noticed it contained an envelope from a realty company. Opening the envelope, he read the enclosed letter that said the building owner was converting this apartment building to condos. It gave specific information about the price of Tom’s unit and what he needed to do if he wanted to purchase the unit.

This conversion to condos came at the right time. Tom had been looking at the condos for sale listings and the purchase price for his unit appeared to be slightly below the prices he saw for comparables in those listings. This was a way to invest a portion of the new wealth Jason had given him. He would buy his unit and look to purchase an additional unit with a westerly view. Purchasing two units would enable him to diversify his investments, which was an investing principle Audrey stressed.

He would try to buy an additional unit at the price offered to the present tenants. To accomplish that, he placed a note on the BB in the mailroom indicating he was interested in purchasing a unit with a westerly view. Tom read the condo building Declarations and By-Laws posted online. He wanted to ensure they did not contain any deal breakers and was satisfied with what was stated in those documents.

The next evening, Tom was contacted by Emma Foster, who said she lived on the seventh floor and her unit had a westerly view. She said she wouldn’t be purchasing her unit because she didn’t have the funds to do it as she was paying off her college loans. Emma said it was convenient for her to live in this building, but now she would be forced to move.

Tom told her he would like to see her unit and she invited him to come there now. He went to her unit and was impressed with the view. He understood why the purchase prices for units with a westerly view were twenty percent higher than units with an easterly view.

He told Emma that he would contact the realtor to see if he could purchase this unit at the price they had given her. If he could do that, and since he was also planning to buy his present unit, Emma could still reside in the building. She could rent his current unit at a lower monthly rate. He contacted the building owner’s representative and told them his intention to purchase these two units which they approved. Tom was going to become both a property owner and landlord.

Monday at work, Tom tried to act as if there was no history when he greeted Myla and welcomed her to the unit. He could see that she had physically matured a little from the last time he saw her, and it was all for the better. She was one good-looking lady. He gave her a schedule of how she would rotate through the unit as he had done. This was to familiarize her with the unit’s operation and what her co-workers were doing.

Myla thanked Tom and said she would do her best to become a valued employee. As he was talking to her, he was admittedly giving her a once-over because of her good looks. It seemed to him that she was doing the same thing to him. The adage, “Of not dipping your wick in the company inkwell,” came to his mind because he was her direct supervisor and more importantly, she was the CEO’s daughter. Then again, he somewhat laughingly thought, there were exceptions to almost every rule.

Tom’s date on Saturday with Audrey was enjoyable for several reasons. He found her to be attractive, intelligent, a good conversationalist, along with having a pleasing personality. He found out later that she was not a “cold fish.” That was because he would classify her as a sexually liberated woman. It started during dinner when her looks at him gave him some good vibes. It continued when he took her back to her condo, she invited him to come inside.

It wasn’t long after they were in her condo she was in his arms, and they were kissing. He hadn’t done anything for that to happen, as she was the one who instigated the kissing.
