Bioweapons Are Now Pets
Writing prompt: Humans have managed to create new species by improving upon bioweapons. But no matter how cuddly, beautiful, or funny they look, remember they descended from weapons.
The slaver ship came from behind a cluster of asteroids that were a almost perfect shield to prevent detection of their ship.
The target was a liner which had been visiting the planets in the system for the tourists. Unfortunately their trip is now going to be a lot more dangerous and possibly tragic for a lot of passengers and crew.
The captain set off the emergency beacon, sent a message torpedo off to the nearest fleet base and called for all passengers to return to their rooms to stay out of the way of the crew as they tried to fight off the slavers.
It was almost guaranteed to be futile but they had to fight and maybe they could drive them off if enough casualties were inflicted.
But even with distribution of weapons to her crew, the captain knew it was a long shot because slaver crews were a lot larger than the 63 armed crew members she had to work with.
But she didn’t understand that there were a couple of families on board who were not the normal run of the mill tourists. These families were from Terra or Sol-III and they had their family pets with them.
Now family pets were not unusual on cruise ships. Lots of families took their pets with them to help keep their children under control and occupied. But humans had a slightly different set of pets.
For millennia, humans had dogs and cats as their primary pets and they helped them hunt and protect their homes.
When humanity reached the stars, their pets went with them. Unfortunately, the galaxy wasn’t as safe as humanity might have wanted or expected. The Wrasteloon empire wanted to show these upstarts who was the preeminent power in the sector and decided to attack their colonies and home planet.
They used their genetically modified bioweapons that had never failed them to attack the humans. But they failed.
Human casualties were minimal because the bioweapons were no challenge for human pets and defenders, not to say what the human military and civilians were capable of doing.
The war didn’t last long but the humans saw that the bioweapons that were used against them had advantages and could be companions. It didn’t take long for humans to produce cute and cuddly pets from the bioweapons. They were perfect companions for kids as they were friendly and loyal. But, they were still bioweapons at their core.
So when the slaver ship ordered the cruise ship to prepare for being boarded, the humans on board knew that things wouldn’t be going good for the slavers this time.
Between the four families, they had 14 pets and they knew that these pets were all that stood between their families and slavers. So they looked at the pets and gave them the orders. “Seek, protect, KILL.”
The rest is history and messy.
