Chapter 5
Still in subterfuge mode, we toured the Museum of Art and all the local attractions ... except the important one ... the SAC (Strategic Air Command) base. They control the ICBM launch silos. Generals have to have permission to enter. We looked at the base ... somewhere in that vast expanse is the control site ... somewhere.
For lack of anything better ... we shopped the Used Car Lots. A 1964 nice blue Corvette coupe found its way to my pocket ... the title ... not the car. I have deep pockets ... but ... not that deep.
The story narrated along with the car ... new recruit ... nice car ... shipped out ... but had to leave the car. Alas ... the ignorance of youth. Never bring your pride and joy to training.
“Sorry, son ... you’re in the Air Force ... the car ain’t.”
And...”Nope ... no time ... you’re due there tomorrow.”
So ... it’s not a split but it’s a cool body style.
I’ll call her Sapphire.
The time came.
“You’re wearing that to the concert?”
Red said, “Well, yeah. You kidnapped me in the clothes I’m wearing and I’ve had no time to shop.”
“Kathy?”
“David?”
“Take Red shopping.” I dangled Corvette keys and my One Card.
“OW!” I sucked a bleeding finger.
The slam almost reset the Motel door hinges.
Car door slam ... door slam ... starter ... RUMBLE. rumble ... SQUEAL. SQUEAL. SQUEAL ... CHIRP. Four on the floor!
Ernie said, “Ooo, Dave. That was mean.”
“How so?”
“Now I have to buy her one.”
“Oops.”
A passage of time ... not as long as expected but longer than necessary. Plotting.
Ernie now has possession of SVIP passes and instructions. Limo, VIP door, no line.
