Human Weaponry Gets Around
Writing prompt: Human weaponry has a way of getting traded all across the galaxy, and sometimes ends up in places it really shouldn’t be...
When the stranger had left in his magical ship, a ‘starship’ they called it, Hrost was still not understanding how a ship could be made of stars or sail without water. And especially how it could sail into the air and beyond the clouds.
Were there lots of these ships up above the clouds of Prosck? Hrost didn’t know but what she did know is that the ‘human’ had left her with a lot of gifts for her help in looking after him while he was injured and needing help while his rescue ship traveled to get him.
Most of the gifts were simple things like magic blankets and clothes that protected from the cold rains a lot better than the leathers and oiled cloth she had worn her whole life. Others were a variety of food stuffs with very peculiar tastes but ‘Grant’ said they were safe for her ‘species’.
But the most magical thing of all was a weapon that Grant had given her that was made of metal and had glowing parts and projected a beam of light that it could change from illuminating a cave or room to projecting a tight and focused thin light that would kill a Darph beast at 50 paces. She had seen Grant do this multiple times and had even been shown how to do it too by Grant as he recovered.
He had taught her lessons on when and why the weapon, a ‘gun’, should be used and when nit should not be. To save herself or others was understandable but it took Hrost a long time to understand why it shouldn’t be used to gain power or goods by taking it from others. Hrost now understood that was ‘being a bully’ and ‘only a coward’ took things from others like that.
The gun was a special thing in that it only needed to be left in the sunlight for a few candles every month to keep it’s ‘charge’ as Grant said. He said as long as she did that and kept it safe, it would always protect her or those she wanted to protect.
Hrost was heading out to the village today and she was outfitted in her best ‘Human’ clothing and wearing her gun on her hip as Grant showed her to do. It was the easiest way to grab the gun when she needed it and was perfect for hunting. And she had a large supply of hides, meat and bone tools and implements she had carved over the months since she saw Grant leave.
As she pulled her small cart into the village, she noticed a group of bandits walking out of Shishoff’s store carrying bloody weapons. She hoped they only wounded her and her husband but Hrost knew what she had to do.
She drew her gun and checked it was set to kill because this was protect time and Grant said that to protect others you needed to be able to kill. You could always choose not to kill but it was harder if you wanted to do it the other way around.
