Chapter 4: The First Members
I reached the overlook position and laid out my weapons. I took out my binoculars and scanned the area. In the distance I could see two minivans driving in caravan. They took the turnoff toward Walt’s cabin.
In the distance about a mile behind them was what looked like a group of Taliban in technicals. Technicals are pickup trucks with heavy machine guns mounted on them, probably Browning M2’s. I knew Pete and whoever he brought was in trouble. I got the Law and opened it. The two vans made the turn and shortly thereafter the technicals with 4 black-shirts in each made the turn the vans entered the switch back and were followed by the technicals, that were now withing range of my Law and grenade launcher with no room to turn around and in my kill zone. I sighted the rocket launcher on the first truck and fired. A second later the truck exploded. I aimed the M79 and fired a grenade at the second truck I miss a direct hit landing about 10 meters to its rear. The crew began to abandon the technical as the second round landed in the bed of the truck.
Threat eliminated. We would make sure the were dead before we left the area. I gathered my gear, my spent cartridges and walked down to greet Pete. I could see Pete had two other men and their families with them. Both men had AR 15 rifles and were very comfortable in the way the handled them. I knew they were either military or ex-military.
Pete Made the introductions.
“Joe meet Mike Rodriguez and Paul Chang.”
“Mike and Paul meet Joe Bridger.”
I then said.
“Nice to meet you Mike, and Paul. We will introduce the families later. Let’s from here before somebody comes looking for those Black-shirts.”
I got into the car with Pete and directed them to my place. We put the cars away out of sight and let everybody to their cabins and let them get settled. I went back to my place and asked Mary if we could prepare a meal to welcome the new families. She smiled and walked to the kitchen motioning me to follow her. She opened the oven and showed me a large roaster. She smiled.
“Turkey with all the trimmings in about 2 hours. I have bread and sandwich makings setup in the game room.”
