Chapter 1
The forest I called home was teeming with life; every tree, bush, and blade of grass seemed to have its own tale to tell. Fairies flitted from flower to flower, their laughter echoing through the air like tiny bells. Water nymphs swam in the sparkling streams, their skin glistening like polished amber. Dryads sang to the trees, their voices deep and enchanting. Wood elves bounded through the underbrush, their agile feet barely making a sound. It was a world unlike any other, where magic was as common as dew upon the morning grass.
As a hunter, my life was not an easy one. I had to be cunning, quick-witted, and strong if I wanted to survive. The forest provided me with everything I needed; game was plentiful, and the creatures of the wood often shared their bounty with me. In return, I protected them from any threats that might arise.
The water nymphs were particularly fond of me. They would often come to me with stories of their kind being hunted by cruel men from the nearby villages. I would listen to their tales, nodding solemnly, and promise to keep an eye out for such individuals. They, in turn, would gift me with jewels they had found at the bottom of streams, or share their knowledge of the healing properties of certain plants and fungi.
One day, as I sat by a bubbling brook, cleaning my hunting knife, a young water nymph approached me. Her long hair was the color of the river, and her eyes were as clear as the water she swam in. “There is a man from the village,” she began, “who has been following you for several days. He has been seen hunting our sisters and brothers. You must be careful, Hunter.”
I felt a cold dread creep up my spine. I knew of the man she spoke of; he was a cruel and greedy man who cared for nothing but himself. “I will keep an eye out for him,” I promised her. “And if I find him, I will make sure he does not harm another of your kind.”
The water nymph nodded gratefully, her expression softening. “Thank you, Hunter,” she said. “Your kindness does not go unnoticed.” With that, she turned and dove back into the water, her lithe form disappearing with barely a ripple.
