Chapter 4

Yeshua respawned inside the main facility, collapsing to the floor from his previous life’s burning death.

“Breathe, man. Breathe. It was just one more death,” Yeshua said to himself. He was getting really tired of dying to these superhero invaders.

Yeshua recovered and rose to his feet. He checked the local map. He was in the eastern wing of the facility. Yeshua grabbed for his rifle and held it in his two hands. He checked the magazine, making sure it was full.

It was.

Weapons were always full upon respawn. Yeshua made sure anyways. He could hear the battle rage outside. Explosions and heavy weapon sounds, the latter likely Avatars or enemy heavy mechs. He was at zero for deployment. Meaning, he had to be careful. Lessons from the dragon planet where the enemy pushed them hard when they made mistakes coming back to him.

Yeshua paused and put the map away. He pressed his lips together. He didn’t know where he was, beyond the general location from the map. He had not been in this part of the facility.

Yeshua looked around. He was at a junction. To his right was a corridor. This corridor turned a dozen or so feet down the hall and out of sight.

Yeshua’s left was another corridor. It too also turned out of sight.

In front of him was a long hallway. He could see windows in the distance. Since the facility had two main areas, he surmised that was a bridge that connected the two main portions.

“Computer, pull up the facility map again.”

“Yes, Sir,” a pause, “Here you go.”

“Thanks, Computer.”

“Anytime, Spirit.”

Yeshua noted he was correct. That was a bridge. Outside, underneath it, was a major connective corridor, large enough for several vehicles to go through. Yeshua figured the facility was durable enough to not break if an Avatar or tank fired at it. Maybe some of the concussive damage could get through.

Hopefully.

Hopefully, if a tank fired at it, it was sturdy enough to survive.

He took a deep breath and blinked in his helmet.

Yeshua pulled the charging handle back of his rifle and was ready for action.

Not a moment too soon, a squad of robotic infantry rounded the corner from the right. Yeshua brought the rifle to shoulder-height and laid into them, aiming down sights as he pulled the trigger.

The rifle kicked to the left and right, an oddity in firearm design. The muzzle brake on the end of the weapon alternated left and right vents. This caused the gun to move left and right. It made the gun harder to handle in a way but eliminated the upward recoil found on other weapons. Yeshua found this method for recoil to be better for mowing down robotic infantry and other at-height opponents, though admittedly it was best used against the aforementioned robots because they came in squads. Individuals were a challenge to deal with because of how the gun went left and right rather than stayed on target.

Yeshua put the first two robots down. The rest returned fire and clipped him. He moved to a corner and fired from around it, gun and arm poking out.

Another kill.

Then he was clipped.

“Argh.”

“You’re hurt, Sir.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be offline while in combat?”

“Yes, but I can still see you’re hurt.

“I recommend waiting for health regeneration.”

“No can do, Computer. I must push them back.”

“As you are. I’ll be here.”

Yeshua pulled his gun back and dropped its now empty magazine. He drew a fresh one from the void and slipped it in, locking it in place and pulling the charging handle once more. Then he got back to work shooting robots.

So, far, they were just basic infantry. Semi-automatic weapons, nothing too special, probably flooding the facility using numbers to beat down the Order Military stationed here.

Then, a robot with a shotgun rounded the cornered. It got one shot off before Yeshua put it down, noticing the difference in weapon design and shifting priorities onto it.

“Shotgun, huh? More advanced weapon bots, I guess.”

Another shotgun-armed bot rounded the corner. Before it could raise its weapon, Yeshua struck it down, too. More robots poured into the corridor. Yeshua kept up the fire, trying to push them back. He stuck his head out from behind the corner every so often to acquire new targets and take stock of the numbers.

“Not good, Sir.”

“I can see that, Computer.”

“At this rate, they will overwhelm your position in a minute.”

“Understood, got any solutions?”

“I, uhh...”

“Demon of the Night!” rang out from the originally left-direction hallway. A robed super soldier was slowly walking towards Yeshua.

“Shima Fucking Yisrael,” swore Yeshua.

“Language,” responded the computer.

“Shush, you. We’re in a war.”

“Still shouldn’t take the Lord’s name in vain.”

Yeshua grunted a response.

The super soldier stopped and motioned beyond Yeshua. He turned and noted the robots stopped and stood at an attention-like stature.

“My Clerics and I are destroying your fellow Demon allies. Soon, we shall retake our Phoenix Down,” announced the metal man at the end of the left-hallway.

“What’s a ‘Cleric’?” Yeshua thought, “And what is a ‘Down’?”

“Today, we shalt wipe thou off this planet. Tomorrow, the renewal of the crusade against the Demon Host. Phoenix will be a Down of operations against the Demon Host: Your People.”

“Crusade? Is that what they call the incursion into Order and our allies’ territories?” thought Yeshua. He also made a note that ‘Down’ was synonymous with the word ‘Base’. Like, a military base.

Yeshua stayed audibly silent. His computer did not say anything, either. They were waiting for the super soldier to make the first move.

“Galooss,” whispered the super soldier. It may have been but a whisper but the audio sensors on Yeshua’s gear picked it up. The words ushered by the super soldier were soft, though. A small metal cylinder flew out from the super soldier’s robes and into their hand.

“Atislav,” continued the super soldier. The cylinder ignited with red plasma into a sword weapon.

“Asqagan,” finished the super soldier. Cross guards formed near the end where the plasma emitted and then emitted their own red plasma.

“Oh no,” thought Yeshua.

The super soldier motioned to the robots behind Yeshua and they started to move once more, bringing up their weapons to fire as they advanced on Yeshua’s position.

Yeshua immediately ducked into the central hallway and sprinted towards the other side, making note of various boxes and crates that could be used as cover. He slid past and around one such crate, about a third of the way down the hallway and used it as cover as he laid fire into the robotic platoon.

The robots advanced on Yeshua regardless of the losses they were taking. He shot one in the head and it crumpled. Two, three, four. Yeshua tossed a grenade their direction, claiming five, six, and seven. He reloaded, throwing the spent magazine at another robot, causing it to stagger, before reloading and putting it on the ground. Robot number nine dropped to more bullets. The tenth and eleventh managed to strike Yeshua. He gritted his teeth through the pain and blew their heads off. The final robot was downed by chucking a pulse blade into its face.

Yeshua paused. Then he reloaded.

“Good. I expect my Demon prey strong,” said the super soldier at the end of the hallway. They had completely ignored Yeshua and let the robots take the fall.

“Let me show you a taste of the Powers of Good.”

Before Yeshua could respond, the super soldier lunged forward with unnatural powers and force palmed with their left hand, blasting Yeshua out of cover and towards the center of the hallway, the bridge part that connected one side of the facility with the other. Then, the super soldier switched things by turning their body to extend their sword arm. The plasma sword also extended, energy lengthening the blade. The super soldier swiped it from left to right and back again, cutting into and slashing the walls of the bridge area.

Fortunately, the force blast pushed Yeshua to the ground on his back, so the sword blade missed him as he was blasted through and past the bridge area. Yeshua flew beyond the reach of the super soldier. As he came to a halt, Yeshua got back to his feet using the handstand method, augmented by his gear jets, the ones on his shoulders, specifically. Yeshua chucked a pulse blade towards the face of the super soldier, who blocked it effortlessly. Regardless, that gave Yeshua the time to start moving and gain momentum again. Yeshua hopped onto the damaged walls and began to wall run away from the super soldier, hopping between right and left sides of the hallway to keep his wall running going.

“You cannot escape, Demon!”

He couldn’t. He wouldn’t.

But for now, he did.

The super soldier chased after Yeshua at unnatural speeds. They were gaining on Yeshua.

“I can taste your death, Demon!”

And right into the T-junction wall at the end of the hallway. The super soldier fell to the floor at Yeshua hopped off the wall and down the right-direction hallway from the junction into a second-floor open patio-like area with a barrier before one would fall off.

He didn’t have much time to think for the super soldier recovered and barreled right behind him. Yeshua turned and jumped over the super soldier, bringing his knees to his chest.

“You won’t escape that easily, Demon!”

Normally, charging into a Spirit that can jump over you would have sent one over the ledge. And that’s what the super soldier ended up doing. The super soldier could also fly, so that was kind of moot. They fell to the ground beyond the patio, twisting their body into a one-hundred-and-eighty-degree turn, and then jumped back up to the second floor, hovering in place.

Yeshua hit the wall above the doorway the two came out of, rotating and wall running to the right. He immediately hit another wall with a doorway, and changed direction with the wall. Then, Yeshua leaped off the wall.

Yeshua was intending to fly across the air past the patio area and dive into a doorway on the other side into a different part of the facility. He instead collided with the super soldier. The two fell to the ground in a heap. Before the latter could react, Yeshua rose to his knees and gave the super soldier a solid knuckle sandwich. He pummeled his winded enemy with left and right jabs, body punches and head punches. Yeshua did not notice the enemy’s hand, the one that didn’t contain the plasma sword, opening, palm facing him.

“Nuligreh!”

Yeshua was sent flying. He landed on the ground, his rifle flung from his hands.

“Enough, Demon. I tire of your fight. I wish to end this hunt.”

The super soldier jumped towards him. Reflexively, Yeshua threw his pulse blade into his assailant’s face, interrupting them long enough for Yeshua to get back on his feet and draw his sidearm, a semiautomatic handgun. Yeshua only managed to get a couple of bullets into the super soldier’s face before they brought their plasma sword up to block and the bullets evaporated into nothing upon contact with the blade.

The super soldier raised their free left hand to their face, palm open and facing them, then they clenched it into a fist while bringing their hand slightly downward and towards them.

“Ganesaneh.”

Yeshua was yanked towards the super soldier by an unknown force from behind. The robed super soldier extended their sword arm, sword angled like a rapier or spear. They intended to skewer Yeshua on the blade.

“Not today,” Yeshua thought.

He used his spirit gear kit to jump mid-air, the jet thrusters flaring to life to give him the momentum to go up and over his opponent. Yeshua landed behind them within arm’s reach of his rifle and going to a crouch, one leg on the ground, the other angled to support. He holstered his pistol and picked the rifle back up, peppering the super soldier with rifle-caliber bullets.

“No, what, how?!” screamed the robed super soldier.

Yeshua’s firing didn’t do much, though. Beneath that robe was still armor, and armor thick enough to shrug off rifle-caliber bullets. For how long, Yeshua did not know. Eventually, he would get through. But long before eventually, his opponent would kill him dead. He emptied the whole magazine into the super soldier. But his opponent still stood strong. Yeshua would need more firepower. Much more firepower.

He checked his gauge. Eighty-five percent. Not enough. Maybe this would be his second death today?

Ahead of Yeshua, the robed super soldier paused and breathed. Yeshua could see them recover from their shock and come back to the seriousness of the combat.

“I see you’re out of bolts, Little Demon. It is no matter. I shall destroy you. And we, Clerics of the Forces of Good People, shall win the day.”

The robed super soldier raised their free hand, palm facing downward and fingers extended, and chanted: “Anahgaliss.”

Lightning shot out from the super soldier’s hand and struck Yeshua, electrocuting him where he crouched. He dropped his rifle and fell forward, collapsing to the ground. Yeshua held his arms steady, preventing total failure of his body. He gritted his teeth in pain as the shocks arced across his body.

Then it stopped.

“See, Little Demon. This is but a taste of our power. You will be destroyed like the rest of the Demon Host and we will move forward with our crusade. Eventually, the entire galaxy will be Good People. Or, destroyed.”

Yeshua summoned his courage once more and sent his pulse blade directly into the face of the robed super soldier. He followed up by tossing both of his grenades at the soldier’s feet and took off running to the right.

“Ugh, that hurt!”

The grenades went off, blasting fragments into and around the super soldier, and giving Yeshua time to make it into his goal, a doorway, sliding through it. A platoon of robotic soldiers turned to face him. He transitioned from his slide into blasting the heads off of the robots.

“Got to keep moving forward,” thought Yeshua.

He popped three robots before he heard the unmistakable sound.

“Demon of the Night! I’m not finished with you!”

Yeshua gritted his teeth and kept pushing.
