Chapter 7: The Aftermath
“This ends my report of the indigenous sentient species Homo Sapien. Having spent a great deal of time gathering the information presented to the council and especially following the exploits of the one called Miriam Johnson who was only a child I sincerely hope that you recognize through her example the qualities and depth of this species empathy to the intended sacrifice of self for the benefit of many. The foresight, intelligence, and reasoning abilities, not to mention the courage this mere girl exhibited, far surpasses the standards our Intergalactic Federation guidelines for protecting sentient life forms that could eventually develop to a point of joining the Federation. My recommendation therefore is to resend the destruction order #GEO .92960318 and establish a permanent base on the far side of their moon so as to continue monitoring the planet as a whole and the dominant species Homo Sapien specifically. I also recommend that a permanent protective force be assigned to prevent tampering by unaffiliated species.
Thank you,
Director of Interspecies Studies

Miri’s wounds healed without developing any infection, it left two scars but they were much better than most wounds of the day. The scar on her psyche or soul was severe, but her triumph of spirit by stopping the monsters and surviving mitigated the effects. Being young also helped. As she grew into adulthood and for the rest of her life she never covered her left arm, she was proud of her steadfast refusal to let evil win. The rest of her life people would politely ask about the scars and the crooked middle finger that refused to work. She would proudly tell the story.
She did very well in school, receiving straight “A’s” in every class she ever took. She was Valedictorian of her High School class, she fought for and won entry into Harvard University, the first to attend that school, and the first woman to graduate Summa Cum Laude. Her attempted entry into the Harvard Medical School was fraught with contentious old windbags who continued to think that the bleeding of George Washington was necessary and justified, even though they bled him to death. Her response to this was a simple “Have you ever experienced it?” And of course they hadn’t. She ended up having her case heard by the United States Supreme Court and won the right of all women in the USA who met the standards of entry could not be denied that entry. Once again she excelled her father had schooled her on his practices in using cleanliness and antiseptic cleaning agents, fine silk thread for sutures, and proper diet for preventing and recovery from diseases. She supported John Snow and his theories, as well as Louis Pasteur and corresponded with both. Once again gaining straight “A’s” even with the somewhat contentious relationship she had with many of her professors. On once again graduating with the highest grades, she was offered a teaching position. Missing her parents and siblings, who were excelling in their studies also. She chose to go back to Oregon and began a private practice close to her family and Portland. She found a good man, had six wonderful, intelligent, successful children. Had a great life, published five books on Medicine, many of which were used in Medical Schools all over the world. She advanced the practice of medicine by a hundred years and by a hundred ways. Her body wore out after surviving the death of her husband by ten years, and died in 1943 being ninety two years old.
In all that time she had no idea that she had literally saved the lives of every living thing on earth. Not many people could have lived a more productive and complete life like that. She was buried in the family plot at the family farm attended by hundreds of people she had treated, many she had saved. And of course her family attended, at least those who could attend, many were serving in the Armed Forces stationed all over the world. Many of those were saving lives in the Medical profession.
But in reality, she didn’t die in 1943, Doctor Klaatu Barada Nikto petitioned the Galactic Court for the intervention of Miri’ death, winning with an unprecedented unanimous vote. At her imminent death her body was exchanged for an unliving exact copy. She was placed in stasis and transported to the most advanced medical facility in the known Universe. Located in the Andromeda Galaxy and reached by using an Einstein/Rosen Bridge (a wormhole). She was placed in a rejuvenator for six months. Every cell in her body went through a regressive therapy that not only reversed the aging of her cells, but prevented them from ever aging again. Then still in stasis she was shipped back to Earth, or more accurately the Earth’s Moon.
