Five months after Bea’s death, her two twin boys were well adapted to their new situation. Diego and Danilo had created an “orphan posse” with Tim, and they spent their after-school time at the Bailey house under the nominal supervision of Leah.
She was enrolled at the local community college, and so far, she had been able to get classes that were either between 9 and 2 o’clock, or in the evening. So, she was around to keep a lid on the three boys if their roughhousing got out of control.
As for the middles, Fernanda and Abel simply walked home from high school with Ted and Val. Routinely, they would change out of their school clothes and put on their running gear: sleeveless t-shirts, shorts, and their running shoes.
The first few times, Val and Abel had drastically slowed their pace so that Nan and Ted could keep up and learn the route to the glade. After that, they ran at their normal pace, which meant that they reached the glade some twenty minutes before Val’s “slowpoke” brother and his girlfriend showed up.
More than once, Nan and Ted would come upon Val and Abel before they had put their clothes back on. Ted would turn away. He had no interest in Abel, and Val was his sister; he appreciated how beautiful she was, but he felt inhibited. He didn’t want to interfere with Abel, and he didn’t want to offend Fernanda, his girlfriend.
Nan felt no inhibitions, though. She’s seen Val’s body a hundred times or more, even this day when they changed their running clothes. And Abel wasn’t her brother. She wasn’t reluctant to run her eyes over every inch of Abel’s skin; particularly those damp inches between his legs!
“We’ll be dressed and gone in a minute, Nan.”
“Oh, don’t rush on my account. Take your time.”
“Ted, your girlfriend is leering at my boyfriend again.”
“Val, there’s nothing I can do about that. Unless I can smuggle a camera into the boys’ locker room at school, she’s going to stare at Abel. That video would show her that Abel is less than average, after all.”
