I felt so good about everything. Although I was uncertain about how it would all work out.
Paul paid his normal visits, brought flowers every time and sweets and was on hand when I was discharged two days later. He drove me back to my house and helped me every step of the way. The whole family were waiting for me, dad and the boys had taken a day off work just to welcome me.
We walked into the front room and everyone told me how great I looked, I called them all liars of course, but it was nice. I put my bags into what was my old room but now it wasn’t. Alan had moved in there and I had the boy’s old bedroom, it was twice as large, and felt like a mansion. The local housing trust had erected a temporary add on bedroom for my other brother at the end of the driveway. I hadn’t even noticed it when we pulled up.
It all felt so strange. Surreal. A house it was but a home it wasn’t, not for me, not anymore. I smiled in accordance with my new persona and laughed at their jokes. I didn’t allow my mum to hug me, not that she was a hugger in any case, but I made sure I didn’t give her an opportunity. I tried hard not to be alone with her.
Neighbors called in to welcome me home, all hugged me. Told me how wonderful I looked, and so glad I had recovered.
For the first few days, it was busy, and I made sure I kept myself busy. On the third day, I was home, Paul turned up and said we should catch up with the old gang. I smiled, of course, and said why not.
We drove off to a party, I told him I didn’t want to be late home, which was fine by him. It was good catching up with a lot of familiar faces but no Macca. I was going to ask after her but thought better of it.
During one of the many conversations, I let slip that Paul and I were to be married soon, and everyone was gushing. As always everyone wanted to see the ring, I had completely forgotten about the ring. But not Paul, and on cue, out came a ring. He slipped it on my finger, it was a tighter fit than I remembered from the last time.
So now it was official I was going to marry Paul.
When we got home that night, I waltzed into the front room, mum and dad and Alan were there, and my younger brother was out being a teenage boy of the late 60’s.
So Paul and I came and I wagged my ring finger at them and everyone jumped to their feet to wish us luck and happiness. It seemed everyone was truly happy for us, and the façade I was wearing also fitted in nicely.
