“No visitors, just yet. Let’s get her stabilized and comfortable first.” The Doctor stated in a commanding tone. Then turning to me, he told me that “Nurse Moody would be here if I needed anything.”
Again I tried to smile and almost gagged.
I laid back on my pillow and wondered what had happened. I closed my eyes and fell back asleep.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and opened my eyes. Nurse Moody was there with her clipboard. A doctor was standing at the foot of the bed, reading one of the many charts there.
“Good morning sleepy head.” She said with a warm smile and a cheeky grin. I tried to say something but couldn’t.
“I know,” she said, “and here is the good news, we are taking the tube out of your throat in a minute, you still won’t be able to talk, but we can then give you some water slowly, to help you get back to normal.”
The young Doctor at the end of the bed gave some instructions that I didn’t understand. Rachel who still had her hand on my shoulder, rubbing it, soothing me, then turned to me and told me that I feel a little cold shot in the back of my hand, and will nod off for a short while.
“I know, we are crazy this way, we wake you up just to give you a shot to put you back to sleep. This time when you wake up the tube will be gone and half of these machines as well.”
She then leaned down and whispered to me. “We need to make up a list on who you want to see first, and maybe who you don’t want to see at all. No hurry, we’ll take it one small step at a time.”
They were the last things I heard until I was woken again. This time the tube from my throat had been withdrawn. My throat hurt and I was told by the Matron to just sip the ice water through a straw.
