Chapter 6: Voyeur’s Remorse
As Edna stood in formation, she watched James Parker come out of the barracks. He had been the first male cadet she saw nude. Now he was fully clothed, but not in Edna’s mind’s eye.
Then she noticed Greg Williams standing in formation and had no trouble remembering him standing in line in the drying room.
But then she saw some male cadets she knew were on the third half-floor but she didn’t remember seeing them shower. She missed them while she was staring at Bobby. Now, she regretted that she hadn’t given them a chance to impress her. She didn’t know what their torpedoes looked like at all. They were mystery torpedoes.
Even one of her fellow Fordham cadets on the male half-floor was equipped with a mystery torpedo. What a missed opportunity! Edna had voyeur’s remorse.
Edna began replaying the free show in her mind’s eye. She smiled at the mental image of Mike Driver reacting to her music choices.
It wasn’t as easy to hate Mike anymore now that she had taken advantage of him. He hadn’t done anything like that to her. She lost her moral superiority. She kind of had voyeur’s remorse about Mike.
At least she felt good about Greg. She had no remorse or regrets about seeing that hunk naked.
She didn’t even remember walking to the Mess Hall or getting her breakfast tray. She just remembered sitting at the table, not eating, staring off into space and remembering Bobby’s crotch.
Bobby’s crotch suddenly appeared across the table from her.
“Wow,” Bobby said, “You sure look happy. You’re smiling like a Cheshire Cat.”
Bobby sat down without asking. He just assumed he and Edna would eat all their meals together for the rest of Pre-Camp.
“Am I?” Edna asked, “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be,” Bobby said, “It’s an awesome smile. That tooth gap is really pretty.”
Edna quickly covered her mouth with her hand. She believed her tooth gap was her ugliest feature. But now this nice guy had said it was really pretty. And he had red pubic hair.
She slowly lowered her hand. “Whaaat did you say?” She asked.
“I said,” Bobby replied nonchalantly, “The space between your two front upper teeth is beautiful.”
Edna paused for a beat while a wave of warmth flushed over her whole body.
Then she said, “No, you didn’t. You said it was really pretty, not beautiful.”
Bobby stopped eating and looked directly at her mouth.
“Well,” he said apologetically, “I’ve taken a better look and now I think it’s beautiful.”
Another wave of warmth flushed over Edna and she had to take a deep breath and exhale.
“What about my nose?” She asked hopefully, “It’s kind of flat and wide, right?”
“Oh yeah,” Bobby answered playfully, “The nose ruins the whole face. BLEECH!”
Edna reached across the table and gave Bobby a playful push in the chest.
“I went too far with the nose,” Edna admitted, “I should have accepted the smile compliment and left it at that.”
“It was weird,” Bobby replied.
“Sorry. Just got greedy,” Edna apologized.
Bobby waved his hand and went back to his breakfast.
“So, what’s this big secret of yours?” Bobby asked.
Edna stopped breathing in fright. Did Bobby know something? Did he know she liked him? Did he know she saw him naked?
“Secret?” Edna replied, “What do you mean? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Last night you asked for PERMISSION to see me this morning, remember?” Bobby explained, “Well, here I am. Why did you want to see me?”
Edna couldn’t say, “For a cheap thrill.” So, she scrambled to think of something that wasn’t technically a lie.
“That’s over now.” (Sadly, Edna thought) “It was kind of personal” (VERY personal, Edna thought) “I’d rather not talk about it” (Or you’d be mad at me, she thought.)
“Okay,” Bobby went back to his breakfast.
What a nice guy. And he thinks my tooth gap is beautiful. He’s more of a grower than a shower.
“Can you at least tell me if it turned out well?” Bobby asked.
“Oh, very much so,” Edna said imagining Bobby in the cold shower flopping around, “Better than I could have dreamed.”
All day long, Edna was a little off at training. She was still above average. But she was not as sharp as she usually was. And she knew why.
Bobby.
He was getting inside her head and making her lose her edge.
At one training site, she was even out-done by Mike Driver. Aargh! He thought he would rub it in a bit.
