Chapter 6
Luna stared Malissa down as they both breathed heavily. She was watching so closely that she knew the second the light bulb when off in her head. At first, Malissa’s face was furious, then guarded then amazement and shock exploded through her expression.
“Oh my god. You really are! Oh, that makes so much sense.” Here she her voice got marginally quieter as if she was speaking to herself. “I mean you don’t like sunlight or crowds. You push me away when we get too intimate. You don’t like bonfires.” Luna grew more confused with each passing moment.
‘Is she really just now figuring out that the fire traumatized me? What the fuck’ but a more charitable part of her piped in ‘better late than never.’ She sighed and shrugged.
“Yes the fire made all of that really...”
“You’re a vampire!” Luna felt like the world performed a record scratch, shifting under her feel as her ears started to ring for a moment. She even stumbled slightly, so thrown off that even her balance went out of whack. “I ... what?”
Malissa gave her a sheepish look. “I’m a little ashamed that it took me this long to figure it out. I mean, looking back, it’s super obvious. Just look at the way you dress.”
Luna had finally caught up to the bullshit spilling out of Malissa’s mouth. “ No no no ... I” here she paused and shook her head “ did you just say that I must be a vampire because I wear all black a lot?”
Malissa paused in her tirade and covered her mouth with her hands “ oh my god! Was that racist? Or ... species-ist? Oh, fuck is it racist to assume you’re a different species? You’re the first one I’ve met so I’m sorry if I was offensive!”
Luna threw back her head and laughed “ Offensive? Now you’re fucking worried about offending me you stupi...” she was cut off again by her ex-girlfriend’s voice, which was getting more fervent with every word. Luna had to bite down on her cheek to keep from screaming at yet another interruption
“You don’t have to worry Luna. I’m not going to tell anyone” She couldn’t help but to roll her eyes.
“Well of course you won’t because you would be labeled as schizophrenic and locked up before you could mess up Barbara’s run for senate” This was the first time that she seemed to register what Luna was saying and it threw her off. Hurt flashed across her face.
“My mother would never do that!” Her words were emphatic but the pitch gave her away. They both knew deep down that her mother would sell her down the river for an extra vote and a pack of cigarettes that she swore to voters she didn’t smoke. Luna figured discretion was the better part of valor and moved on.
