Chapter 3: The truth ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’
Mother and Fran practiced their story all weekend. On Monday they invited Suzy over to Mother’s house on the pretense of planning a birthday party. Mother said they sat at the kitchen table talking about the party, not the affair. When Suzy went to sit her cup in the sink, Martha took out her pistol. Suzy turn and Martha shot her twice in the chest. Suzy was dead before she hit the floor. Martha picked up Suzy’s cup with a dishtowel and threw it against the wall, then took a knife out of the butcher block and put it in Suzy’s hand. Mother said she did cry when the sheriff arrived. She gave a statement then another written statement at the Sheriff’s Office. The D.A. was present for that one.
Mother said the D.A. became so mad she called her daddy, the owner of the firm and told him everything. Mr. Greene said he fired Paul and told him to pack his things and leave.
Paul disappeared! Not a trace of him at all! So no place to serve him with divorce papers. The D.A. filed for divorce under the abandonment clause. There was not much of an investigation into his whereabouts since there was no insurance involved. Everyone figured he just ran off and disappeared. It happens!
