Henry Laenas
Hours had gone by as I kneeled before this altar for the gods. With only the candles as my sole light shining my presence, along with the presence of the seven gods of the divine. Their statues stood mighty high and looked down upon me. Their stony eyes open, a reminder that the divine sees all and hears all. If so, then I must continue to pray more to the sinful horrors that they may have witnessed under the Laenas name.
“To the great gods of the divine,” I started, bowing my head. “I, Henry Laenas, your humble servant, come to you now for atonement and guidance for my house. I atone for all the sins committed under my house and pray for guidance on ensuring my house’s grace.”
I have said this prayer so many times that it has become second nature to me. By now, the gods should have grown tired of listening to this old man’s repetitive prayer. If I were in their shoes, I know I would.
The door of the chapel suddenly opened, letting in sunlight that quickly brightened up these silent walls before shutting once more.
“I knew I would find you here again, Henry,” a voice came from behind me.
“Like a good man should be,” I said as I tried to get up. I must have been kneeling on my knees for quite a while, as my whole legs were numb to the bone. I could hear both my knees crack as I stood up straight and turned to meet the man whose voice it belonged to.
“But good men also have a life outside the church that also needs to be attended to,” Sigric said, as he started to relight the burned-out candles. He wore that same old brown robe instead of the silver-white robe most priests are supposed to wear, with sandaled brown sandals. His grey hair started to part, revealing patches of baldness about to come in. “Especially in your case.”
Only Sigric was the only one in this town who knew the burden I carry. I trusted him greatly. Not because he was a priest, but because we were once brothers-in-arms years ago in the king’s army during the Crusade of Ablon. A terrible war that was. I still have nightmares about those monsters and abominations we fought in those lands. Thank the gods that time is over.
Now, I face another battle. One, I fear that I am slowly losing.
“Edith is growing more ... unstable,” I started as I took a seat in a nearby pew. “I thought I satisfied her hunger last night, but this morning, she was like an animal in heat. I had to deny her and head to the market. I pray to the gods that she can maintain her hunger until I return home. And then my elder son...”
I placed my hands on my head as I could feel another migraine coming on. They started to become more intense, but I managed to fight through it. But that son of mine. The more I know about his doings in town, the more my migraine doubled down its intensity.
“I’ve heard,” Sigric said as he patted my back in support, “a few of the men in town have confided in me about their wives and daughters’ infidelity with a particularly handsome farmer’s son.”
“He’s becoming worse,” I said, staring up at the statues. “His mother’s blood runs strong in him. Soon, he’ll be lost to the darkness that consumed Edith’s entire lineage.”
“Pray that doesn’t happen, Henry,” Sigric said sternly, facing me with great concern in his pale blue eyes. “You must be vigilant in your mission to stave off your wife’s darkness. For both her sack and your children’s sack. If not, then you know what must happen.”
“But Sigric,” I said, desperation and exhaustion clearly heard in my voice. “I am one man, and I have tried everything. But Richard and Edith, I fear, will soon be lost to the dark. The only chance I have in saving the rest of my family is to get Solomon and Mabel away from them, far away from the darkness.”
It kills me to say such things, but that is the truth. My body is weary with the continual demands of Edith’s needs. While I was in my prime, it wasn’t a problem, and it felt pretty wonderful. I had so much vigor and energy back then. I wasn’t a man like Henry was, but I did have my adventures with maidens, nonetheless. I was able to satisfy Edith’s needs, and she would go about a day or two perfectly fine.
At first.
Now, my body has gotten older. The vigor that came with my prime is now lost to me. I could still get it up, no problem with that, especially for a woman like Edith. But her hunger and needs have only grown while my body and energy have begun to decline. I don’t know how long I’ve got before that woman rides me so far that I wind up dead in our marital bed. From my aches and exhaustion throughout my body, it won’t be long.
I brushed some of my light brown hair from my face. I noticed some greys have started to set in, another sign of my body weakening. “I don’t know how long I can keep going.”
Sigric sighed. “We knew a time would come when Edith’s darkness would resurface. And you, Henry, have done a great job of keeping it at bay and giving Edith a life of happiness and love for all these years. Never forget about that.”
I nodded my head.
