Chapter 8: Healing in the Cabin
Vanessa lay on the cot, trembling from cold and pain. Her legs were useless, twisted awkwardly from the fall, and every small movement sent jolts of agony through her body.
Bill knelt beside her, his face calm and steady. “Multiple breaks,” he said quietly. “We need to set them, or you’ll never walk again.”
Vanessa’s stomach twisted at his words. She had no choice. She nodded, biting her lip against the fear and the pain she already felt.
Gently, Bill grasped one of her legs. “I need to pull it straight,” he warned. “It’ll hurt, but you have to stay still.”
With careful, practiced strength, he lifted her leg and slowly extended it, straightening the angle of the break. Vanessa gasped, her breath catching in her throat, as pain flared sharply through her thigh. She gritted her teeth, clinging to the cot, willing her body to obey.
“There,” he said after a tense moment. “Now we wrap it.”
He repeated the process with the other leg, each movement deliberate, precise, and firm. Once both legs were aligned, he slid boards beneath them and wrapped strips of cloth tightly but carefully, creating sturdy splints to hold the bones in place.
