Chapter 6: The Fall
The sled tore across the frozen trail, the huskies wild with confusion and the wind screaming around her. Vanessa gripped the handlebar with both hands, the cold biting through her gloves. She had never driven a team before; she didn’t know the words to guide them or how to read the shifting snow.
The dogs sensed her fear. They veered off the packed trail, skidding toward a slope that dropped sharply toward the river below.
“Whoa! Stop!” she cried, but her voice was lost in the wind.
The sled hit a hidden ridge of ice. For one dizzying instant it lifted into the air, and Vanessa felt weightless, breathless, as if time itself had slipped away. Then the runners struck the ground sideways, snapping the handlebar from her hands.
