Modern Fantasy stories?

dragonmike1973 🚫

I absolutely adore the idea of stories with Elves, Orcs, Gnomes, Goblins and such in the modern world. They are rare and tough to find. I just read one with Elves that I enjoyed (The Trouble With Elves: https://storiesonline.net/s/23355/the-trouble-with-elves), but I was wondering if anyone knew of any more?

Lazlo Zalezac's Magic may suit; the sequel More Magic is unfinished.

Gina Marie Wylie's The Mystery of Magic probably doesn't fit, as although the MC is modern, the action takes place in Middle Earth; there is at least part of a sequel on her site which I think spills over into our world.

El of a Way to Go Universe by Ol'Mac

This is a Universe populated by all the characters one would find in a clasical fantasy setting. The twist being that the tales are set in modern day "Chicago, IL". The tales themselves are,(normally) a lighthearted romp with enough adrenaline shots to keep your interest. Enjoy the trip, Folks.

You don't think #1 bad guy is a major component?

My recollection of the story is that elves are not a major component. Witches, yes. Werefolk, yes. YMMV.

Elves, important, yes.

Ian

ETA I think #1 bad guy is the Hag.

The hag is just a weapon, the elve is the mastermind/villain

It is premier

I'm not totally certain of forum norms and expectations. Is it improper to link to premier stories? As a longtime premier member, I pay little to no attention to whether a story is premier only as I read. Not allowing consideration archived stories eliminates a huge number of excellent stories.

Why would it be improper? Those stories are part of the SOL site. That they require a premium membership doesn't make it improper to list them when they fit an inquiry from another reader. An exception might be if a reader specifically requests non-premium suggestions but even then other readers often use those same suggestions for their to-read list and they might not be limited to non-premium stories.

I want to add one thing:
if a suggested story is premium please add this fact to your suggestion.
If another – like ian_macf did – adds this fact, the intention might be misunderstood as by tg_smith64.

A good suggestion but I know myself :) I don't even notice it if a story is premium or not so I will have to remember to check that before making a suggestion, something I'm almost guaranteed to forget.

Is there even a way for a premier member to tell if a story is premier only short of logging out?

ETA: I checked. If you do a search, it gets marked in the search results if it's premier only. However if you access the story from your library, there is no way to tell.

Undocumented, but yes there is.

Access the story and then click 'Show Story Details' under its title.

Premier stories will have an asterisk before the word 'Synopsis'.

I'm not premium and it's honestly just not that hard to hit the back button if a link is premium. Sometimes a story looks good enough that I cough up a few bucks for premium.

If you're okay with dead tree, there was a group of Mercedes Lackey series in the mid-90s called Elves on the Road. It consisted of three main series with most books co-written with various other fantasy authors of the era like Ellen Guon, Larry Dixon, Mark Shepherd, and Holly Lisle.

The series were Bedlam Bard (elves and humans using music to cast magic to save the world); Diana Tregarde, a witch who writes romance novels to pay the bills while defending people from vampires and demons; and the SERRAted Edge, about a group of elves researching new technologies so they can drive race cars without "cold iron".

In total there's about two dozen novels and a few story collections. Not the best writing ever, but they tend to be a fast, light read.

In my story Azatlan Portal https://storiesonline.net/s/25148/aztlan-portal

A leader of some Goblin scouts is an important secondary character, he has two trusted companions, and adopts a puppy; the rest of his unit are just "spear carriers" there are several Magisters too. They are present in the early chapters, but won't be seen for a while after chapter 15, or so.

Several "Fey" a "demi-Urk" and a polymagus (shape shifter) are briefly in the story in parts of chapters 16 and 18. They are part of a "Special Reconnaissance Team" infiltrating Chihuahua. Their arc is becoming prominent again around chapters 26 and 27.

There are other inhuman and demi-human characters.

However, for most of the first 25 chapters, most of the story is from the perspective of people from our Earth c.2018; as more people begin taking the situation seriously, more will be seen of the aliens.

Occasionally, the aliens comment upon curiosities such as big screen TVs, cold beer from the tap (but it's Weak "small beer"), they find utility of vehicles. They are impressed by the Firepower and range of firearms. However, they are contemptuous of our lack of magical abilities.

My intention is to tell a story about Asymmetrical Warfare, such as in Afghanistan, Iraq, or even what is happening in Ukraine. I wanted to avoid the politics and biases of actual events.

Magic vs. Technology is an Asymmetrical conflict. I am trying to portray interesting characters to experience unusual events.

My story is multifaceted, and slow, as wars tend to be. As we see lack of preparations and reliable Logistics severely effects a military campaign.

Death and serious injury, becoming refugees, and other matters are very serious. So, I try to add some levity to parts of the story. I was an Infantry NCO, who experienced multiple deployments, and some combat. We often indulged in various means of amusing ourselves.

Dead Tree, try Wen Spencer's Elfhome series. Three parallel universes, Elfhome, Earth & Onihida. Elfhome has immortal, magically bio-engineered elves, wargs, carnivorous walking trees & Wyverns.
Onihida has Oni (Japanese orcs) Kitsune & humans magically merged with crows. Once there were natural magical gates through caves that led to earth from both worlds, the elves tore them down to prevent invasion by Oni.
Then humans built a hyperspace gate in orbit that instead of jumping ships between stars, acts as a lense for magic, sending the city of Pittsburgh to Elfhome and swapping it for virgin forest. In the South China sea a small rock is swapped with Onihidia, giving the Oni a beach head. Every time the gate is switched off, new supplies & forces are moved into position to be swapped between worlds the next time it is activated.
