I've read a few stories where the MC lives in or near a junkyard/boneyard for spaceships and he builds his own that happens to be as good or better than most of the military ships being used I was wondering where I can find more stories that are similar

What is the title of the story you refer to?

Sounds like a couple of stories from Ka Humnd. Not sure how many that author has written along those lines.
