More like these guys?

Quasirandom 🚫

So there's a couple writers I group together as being similar in style and manner: Always Raining, Coaster2, qhml1, and Telephoneman. (Allied to these guys is The Wanderer / Denham Forrest, though he often wanders a bit darker than those four. Some of Jay Cantrell's adult stories also walk nearby, though in more hard-boiled terrain.) Not all their stories are the same, nor equally good for that matter, but their typical stories have many similarities.

I've two related requests:

What other authors are like these four in spirit?

Are there any female writers, or writers of female POVs, with a comparable spirit?

Note: I usually ignore RAAC and BTB stories.

What other authors are like these four in spirit?

Hmm. I don't get on with Always Raining's stories, so to me they are (presumably) not similar in style and manner. Makes it difficult to respond. Others may have similar views.

Who can you rec as similar to the other three, then?

@Quasirandom

Try TedBiker. British, somewhere in between qhml1 & Coaster2 in style. His stories are a pleasure to read, and occasional have a twist along the way.

You're right, he does write in a similar way. I've had less luck with finishing his stories, though β€” can you recommend a couple more to try?

@Quasirandom

Nope. He has the understated British stiff upper lip style, but not enough counter balancing humor/humour to be on my re-read list. Good but not great. GaryAPB is similar. I've never been able to finish Back to Bristol.
I do like Andyhm's Woodworker's Wife.

@Radagast

True that Back to Bristol doesn't have as much humor/humour as the core guys above, but the drama and very dry irony carried me through the story. It's not for everyone, though. And you're right, Andyhm's stories I've tried have that same lack of humour.

I do have The Woodworker's Wife in my queue, thoughβ€”I'll bump up its priority. Thanks!

@Quasirandom

I've just checked, I have his The Restraining Order and Secrets & Lies downloaded.
I also recommend DFWbeast for an American author who is more about the emotions than the act. Hedge Funds & The Long Goodbye are both good.
