Female POV esp Recovery-TimeTravel-DoOver

jasonr.taylor ๐Ÿšซ

Hi all, thanks for the help.
I'm hoping to find stories from the female POV to help me be a better writer in this regard.

I have a story outline with a woman recovering from dark times including prostitution and drug addiction.

Time Travel and Do Over are the other themes I'm working on.

All include a major female characters, as either leads or co-leads, so that's what I'm hoping you'll recommend :)

Thanks!
Jason

Aroslav's Not This Time

Bruce Bretthauer & Colin Keizer's The Road Taken...and Taken over on BtFH (free registration; drop down the 'Quick Links' menu for Authors)

Both female PoV do-overs

'Not This Time' is a great story, but posting it in this thread is a bit Spoilery :)

I looked for "The Road Taken...and Taken", neither Bruce Bretthauer nor Colin Keizer have it listed in Beyond the Far Horizon

'The Road Taken' is definitely there under author 'Bruce Bretthauer & Colin Keizer'. It is the only story for the joint authors.

Oh, there's a separate entry for both of them together, I missed that.

Do over with body swap, boy becomes girl.

You might try Oz Ozzie's The Dragons Backbone.

Drug addiction and prostitution are main themes for the female M/C along with redemption. No Time travel or do-over though.

You might like to sample "Retribution" by Thornfoote, the first book in his "Linda's World" Universe. IMO it contains some good insights into the female lead's viewpoint.

Fantastic rec's!
Now, I just need a time turner and alternate reading accommodations :D

Please, keep them coming! Especially if you have any more like "The Dragons Backbone".
Having never been 1) female 2) drug-addicted or 3) a sex worker, I'm obviously going to be flying blind without some outside insights.
I'm actually reading a few biographies as well, though none so far seem to quite fit my MC, they do give some (rather eye-bulging) clarity into the world that is lifestyle/profession/last hope/terrifying prison and so much more.

Time travel / do over / multiverse / bodyswap.
Incomplete, but a great read up till that point.
Female MC, but a male writer, so I've no clue if the characterization is right or not.

Joreymay's "Angel" is a fairly interestin gender swap where a male transforms into a female. The whole family tries to help with the adjustments; social, moral, and physical. May give you an insight.

I actually rather enjoy writing from a female POV. And have done it a great many times over the years. Here are a few of my unique ones.

https://storiesonline.net/s/21463/once-again-for-the-first

This one is interesting, because it is a kind of do-over, but the person narrating it is not the one repeating. Think of "Groundhog Day", but as seen from somebody on the outside seeing another repeating a day.

https://storiesonline.net/s/22822/valley-girl

"Valley Girl" is another. It is actually a companion piece to another story "Country Boy, City Girl", but told from the point of view of the lead female of the first. And much of what you describe, she also deals with. Including prostitution and drug abuse.

https://storiesonline.net/s/23664/sally-the-welder

"Sally the Welder" is yet another, but is a period piece set in the 1940's.

I do not make a conscious choice which POV I am going to use, until once I start to actually write the story. Most times it is quickly obvious which I have to pick, because of where I want the story to go. But I have also made the choice at least once to do both in the same story.

https://storiesonline.net/s/18982/bohica

This one is a bit different, as the character has a "super power" that involves changing genders. And part of the challenge in that was combining both genders in the same character, yet have their reactions be completely different for each one. Chris (the natural female host body) is very different than Bohica (the male Superhero persona). And thinks, acts, and reacts very differently. Yet the other personality is always in the background, and sometimes I even crossed them over, so the reader could sense the frustration of Bohica as "he" is "forced" to kiss another man and have sex with him. And the reverse, then Bohica finally gets a girlfriend and Chris (a heterosexual female) has to endure the same thing in return.

That one probably sets a standard for female POV. There is one other elsewhere that may even be better for female point of view, "The Wandering Inn."

Hi Remus, could you please provide a link, site or author name for "The Wandering Inn", my google-fu has failed me :(

Thanks!

My apologies, I was unaware of the policy regarding outside links.

Just for clarity:

The policy isn't about outside links in general. Links to news items or on-line references such as an on-line dictionaries or encyclopedias are fine.

The policy is that we should not link to competing story sites.
