I just have to feed my masochistic streak and ask for recommendations on stories that had great potential, but stopped in the middle due to the author either dying or disappearing.

The first two are Premier-Only.
The Private
ETA: This thread has some good suggestions also.

Wow, I've forgotten about 'the private'. Its funny how invested one becomes in a story, and then time passes and you find that you're not.
Thanks for the link
Some excellent ones there.
Raven Soule recently passed the torch on Tycoon to someone. I hope that means we will see an ending to that story. Raven really did have it to the point we would see the final conflict play out (or so it seemed) and finally learn some of the on going questions when his health over took his ability to write.
Rewind is mentioned too, Don surprised us all during the holidays by announcing his return, now we wait for the fruit of his labours to appear.
Xalir had completed volumes in his My Journey story but it has no answers and ends on a cliffhanger as to the future of one of his girls. There had been word of the mantle being taken up to continue this (we got one unfinished story completed by WriterMick) but its been a long time with no word as to progress.
Magical Slavery was one I enjoyed reading but hasn't seen an update in a long time, the author having move on to other stories.
The Bitch is another I enjoyed, but two years since there has been an update or anything from the author.
Xalir passed away so there won't be any finishing his stories until or unless someone else takes up the mantle. There was some talk that it might get taken up but I haven't seen the results from that.
Getting Ahead by Shakes Peer2B is one of my favorites, this for three reasons:
1. It's really a good story,
2. But you have to read Getting By by the same author, but the best may be,
3. The author is returning if his blog is to be believed so it may eventually end up finished.
And both stories are highly rated. Deservedly so.
ETA: to correct screwed up links
Jim S - your link for "Shakes_Peer2B" doesn't work so I provided again it below if anyone needs it,,, (the ":" is missing after "https")

I would recommend Twice Lucky series by Joe J.
https://storiesonline.net/series/1301/twice-lucky
Joe has returned after long absence and is posting again. Hopefully the third book get some updates from Joe.
I'd like to add Rare Dream's Bowling for Hearts which has some loose ends, and set the story up for a sequel which sadly never came.
Bow Valley by Barbe Blanch The Story is premier but I feel that the story was probably at or near a stage to start a second "book".
