Looking for good military hero stories. The Grim Reaper is a great example. Or A Fresh Start. I have read several, but they are hard to find new good ones. Hoping to find some diamonds presented in suggestions. Ex airborne infantryman so I enjoy well written military.

The Florida Friends series by Dual Writer has several vets who are not as retired as they initially appeared.

'A Reluctant Hero' by Douglas Fox. Interesting twist from the usual military story.

There is another similar story in the same universe by the author that wrote all the Martian revolt stories.

The Private is good military scifi about a hero. Incomplete but long and enjoyable.

Giants in the Sandbox has a wounded ex military anti-hero.

Oops need to clarify, not looking for far future, aliens, high fantasy. Old west can work, do over can work, but mostly current era like Grim Reaper. Or A Country Boy Can Survive, or Once a Marine.

Try "The Shack". I forget who wrote it.

Slid into your DMs with one from the other main site that's excellent. I haven't seen Lady In Red mentioned, though in the original book the MC is not in the military yet he does have military training from his father. The most common complaint is the story isn't realistic, so if you're a stickler about that you may not enjoy it. Hunter is a story featuring an ex-military now-CIA agent where the MC plays the hero. Edit: adding Game World by The Blind Man as well as the character has a military background, it has some future based element, but also is an odd combination of future/past/present rolled together.

I'll suggest black coffee's The Gunny and Lenore although it's best to read Sparks first. Otherwise it's hard to make sense of a lot of the characters.

Gunny is quasi-military with most of the action in the latter half of the story. However, to me, it's excellent and fully deserving it's high rating.

To wander away from these hallowed halls - 'Red Storm Rising' by Clancy and Bond is a very good visualization of what a modern day conflict between the USSR and NATO forces. No one outstanding hero, unless it would be the intrepid weatherman, but a great ensemble cast from both sides.

To return to our world, 'The Mission' by Sagacious is a shorter story of action of a different sort during a modern day USSR/Nato conflict.

I too am a veteran. I am getting assistance with an Editor for some more chapters of Sixth Generation Cowboy and a Third Generation Whore. (I expect to have some up just after Easter at the latest; I am trying to be pessimistic because I had a significant delay last year.)

MC is a Marine who was wounded, and is on Bereavement Leave. Many of the secondary and tertiary characters are veterans too. In the upcoming chapters there will be the use of military patrolling skills. Later there will be some use of CQB techniques. Tactics and military action will be secondary at best to the story.

I would appreciate it when I get those chapters posted, you would browse through and read the military parts and provide your feedback here in the forum, on this post.

While various sexual escapades are a major part of the story, I am trying to realistically depict modern military experiences. In particular how some individuals cope, or have difficulty coping with return to "ordinary" life.

Damsels in Distress stories has vet in the MC role.

The John Taylor series by Lumpy has a vet as the MC.

In Dual Writer's Florida Friends series, Steve, Chuck and Lissa are all vets, as well as several of the other characters.

In the Shamus Journals the MC was a vet. There are also a couple stories about a female vet that comes home and I think becomes a deputy.
