Finding Stories

octavion55 ๐Ÿšซ

Is there anyways of really finding stories without just searching the top lists or being premium? Been pretty difficult finding stuff to read.

I find the Category Search function very useful, as well as the recommendations at the end of a good story.

@octavion55

At the end of the story at the bottom of the page is a link that says "Show Similarly Tagged Stories"

Click on the link to see stories with similar tags. I am not sure I would call them 'recommendations' but the list will be similar in nature depending on how well the story is tagged.

I find this especially helpful as the stories are sorted by mostly by the highest score first.

Reading messages in the various forums (fora?) turns up stories people are looking for or discussing. They're worth checking out and I often find stuff I enjoy in this way.

Once I find a story that I like, I'll usually take a look at the author's other work. This too, can be a rich vein to mine.

at the end of the stories, just below the scoring box is a link that says Show Similarly Tagged Stories - you click on that to see some recommended stories.

I'll also go to the Favorite Stories list of the Author that I'm reading to see who they recommend. It can be found at the top of their Author page.

@gruntsgt

It can be found at the top of their Author page.

Only if they have any favorites listed. Sadly more often than not the author hasn't bothered to list any favorites. But those that do generally list stories similar to the ones they write making it a great resource for their readers.

If you read a story they recommended and enjoy it, let them know. They usually appreciate knowing their effort was helpful.

@anim8ed

if they have any favorites listed

And sometimes they seem to have made one visit to the favorites site, early in their career as an author on SOL. It would be so much better if authors would update their favorites more often. If the newest favorite is from 2009 or earlier, there are a lot of stories the author may like that are not on his favorites list.

I find premium to be well worth it. I maintain a subscription, but if money is an issue, just pay for a month, use the advanced search benefits, download any story you MIGHT want to read, and then renew again when you can afford it. This website is a great service and deserves our patronage.
