Banadin's Rick Jackson series

Please, it is the Richard Jackson series. Both 9th grade and 10th grade use the correct name. Only the summer vacation story uses the less formal Rick. Richard is the ideal name for a man. We all want to be Rich and hard. Nobody want to be Rickety.

Like Rick, Dick is a well used short form for Richard.

If I can't think of a pun or something amusing there usually isn't much I can contribute.

In the Land of Re there are some amusing instances. It started in High School when in Chemistry we were studying Redox Equations (something about reduction oxidation and getting electrons to balance.) Then we started talking about what kind of ships would tie up to Re Docks. My favorite was the Re Publican Party, made up of tavern owners and other business supporters whose major opponent was the Re Diculace Party, whose primary interest was who put their Dick where and when, something like gay liberation support. And was intended to appeal to the populace. Combines Dick and populace.

And electricians can Re place your Re fuse in your electric Re mains. If you have a landlord he probably insisted you have a Re lease. One of the currencies is the Re mark. If you study grammar you learn about Re nouns and Re verb eration.

Is Ma/mt a recurring theme in the story, or is it something that just happens once or twice?

It is not a recurring theme. spoiler alert It is in relation to an abusive relationship that is discovered and gets corrected. Ma/mt is not a theme I enjoy either but feel that it is done here in a way that fits the story without being squicky and is only a very small part of the overall story.

I'm ten chapters in and I'm enjoying the main plotline well enough, even if I found the inbred little town a little offputting. You're right that some editing is needed, though I've read worse!

It has been a while since I last read the story. I think even before I started doing reviews. I may have to reread it with the thought of reviewing it.

That said, it can be a bit squicky for some folks but the overall theme of coming together as a community to overcome some serious threats and conflicts is what I enjoyed most about the story. The 'community' does shift over time as all communities tend to do. It doesn't hurt that 1/4 of my family tree is firmly planted in Mennonite tradition.
