Starting a new life

irvmull ๐Ÿšซ

I enjoy stories where someone abandons their old life and takes on a new identity.

Jacob's Grandaughters is one of my favorites:

and A.A.Nemo has a couple others along the same lines, like Concordia.

Yuma, by JRyter is another:

I'm sure I've missed many. Recommendations appreciated.

Honky Tonk Hero and Prisoner of Widows both by Joe J might suit you.

In honky tonk the MC had no choice in reinventing his life. They took out some of his brain. Still a great story.

FantasyLover has several, including "Escape from Lexington."

Yes, I just finished reading that one - great story, thanks for the recommendation.

Escape from Lexington is good too, I'm pretty sure I've read that at least twice in the past, maybe more.

Edit to add: Just finished Prisoner of Widows, too. Different and enjoyable read.

I actually had to cover that in "Disco Vampire".

https://storiesonline.net/s/25328/disco-vampire

A slightly tongue in cheek Vampire story, where the main character becomes a vampire in the 1970s. And of course she stops ageing, so every decade or so had to "reinvent" herself in order to escape detection.

And one thing I brought up was that as the decades progressed, that was becoming harder and harder. In the 1970s it was not an issue, literally at that time it was a piece of cake to create a new identity. But after 2001, it was increasingly hard so she was normally resorting to going to areas of strife (Former Yugoslavia in this case) and blending in with the refugees and claiming all identity and paperwork was lost so were able to make a new identity. And at the end of the story was about to do it again in Russia-Ukraine because of the then ongoing crisis over Crimea.

I wrote that in 2021, if I had written it a year later I simply would have had them plan to join the mass exodus of refugees fleeing Ukraine after the Russian invasion.

I heard she had sex with the disco duck.

No need, it was a fowl play...

I'm sure there are some stories here where the government gives someone a new identity via the witness protection program, but they're professionals.

To me, that's less interesting than someone having to do it on their own.

Having it happen purely by accident- i.e. they neither wanted nor planned for it to happen - would be even more interesting, I think.

Any stories like that?

I seem to recall reading some stories where a person without memories was found without any documents and those who found that person helped them adopt a new identity.

I read Reboot today, or should say re-read.
Soon realized that I had read it years ago.
It's definitely a "keeper".
