Looking for caper stories

Quasirandom 🚫

I'm in the mood for a couple good caper stories. They don't have to be heists, though those are certainly welcome too. Some of the Tales from the Shack count here, but I'm hoping to find something new.

Any suggestions? TIA

Heh β€” I'd forgotten that one. Pretty good. Any more?

Anything by D.T. Iverson is good. He has a taste for old school detective style stories as well as his usual 'Spy nerd in Washington' theme.

All three look like they'll scratch this itch. Thanks!

Donald Westlake's Dortmunder books are IMHO the best of this genre. Complicated capers, straightforward writing, very funny. (In The Bank Shot, the gang steals a bankβ€”not robs a bank, steals a bank!) Dead tree (although my local library also provides ebook access to this series).

Warning: Mostly written in the 70s, and the characters and cultural backdrop isn't exactly enlightened.

Heh. I almost posted the question as "things like Dortmunder pls" but decided that was slightly too restrictive, plus I wasn't sure everyone would recognize it.

Well, heck!

Then I'm sure you know that if you want a similar feel, but more somber vibe, you go back in time to Hammett and the classic noir detective novels. And if you want contemporaneous stories with similar humor, then Gregory MacDonald (Fletch, etc).

I'm afraid I can't name a more modern successorβ€”but I'd be eager to read one if anyone has some suggestions!

Culinary stories might mention capers and perhaps even include a recipe or two, but you're not likely to find many of those on SOL :-(

Anything culinary requires suggesting the Donaldson series by Lazlo Zalezac, specifically Cookie Magic

Capers? Looking for capers?

Two schemes -- both long cons -- both involving serious moolah, twisted imagination, and a supporting cast.

I would suggest both in the series, if only to get the rest of the second one. (Grin)

I'd forgotten about that - been a while since I read it.

Do the Home for Horny Monsters count

Not really? That's more fantasy adventure, in my mind.
