Corpus Christi

https://storiesonline.net/s/29142/variation-on-a-theme-book-4 by https://storiesonline.net/a/grey-wolf (there's a mention of the place in Chapter 32)

My search string in a search engine was: site:storiesonline.net corpus christi
There were some false positives, maybe "corpus" without "christi" would have been better, your "Christe" would possibly have had the same effect.

...which is illustrated by doing a G search:

site:storiesonline.net "corpus christi"

...which only returns 5 results, two of which are for the same story

Yes - mine just barely qualifies. More than Dinsdale's link, though. There's a 3-night trip in Book 3, Chapters 27 and 28.

I would absolutely not say that it's based in Corpus, though. That's three nights/four days out of well over 1000 days, by this point. I'm also not an expert on Corpus by ANY means. I've been there a few times, and to the majority of the places I mention, but that's about it.

Still, it's there :)

"Why is Corpus Christi so famous?
Legend has it that in 1519, on the Roman Catholic Feast Day of Corpus Christi, Spanish explorer Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda discovered a lush semi-tropical bay on what is now the southern coast of Texas. The bay, and the City that later sprung up there, took the name of the feast day celebrating the "Body of Christ."

Thanks for the help, I had just finished something based in Austin, and I thought if the others I had read centered around Dallas, El Paso etc. I have heard it is a beautiful and historic city and was just curious.

Louis L'Amour wrote at least 2 books set in the vicinity of Corpus Cristi c.1866 in the aftermath of the ACW American Civil War.

He provides some vivid descriptions of the unique terrain in vicinity of Corpus Cristi, that effected settlement and development of the area.

I have considerable interest in the region. Modern politics, and general ignorance of history, leads to many misconceptions.

New Spain included what is now the nations of Mexico, the Philippines, as well as parts of the USA, in particular California and Texas.

What is now the State of New Mexico was called that before the nation of Mexico existed (New Spain). The vast majority of people living there c.1600 to 1850 were different from the people of Mexico and the USA.

The decline of Spain in the 1600's, as well as the failure to find the "7 Cities of Gold" or other easily exploited riches resulted in the "retreat of the borders of New Spain" North of the current USA/Mexico borders. California and Texas are exceptions, for different reasons.

The Californias were better connected to New Spain by sea (the Pacific Ocean), including what is now the Philippines, than to Mexico City.

Tejas was in danger of being lost, similar to most other colonies of New Spain, until a significant number of "Yankees" were recruited c.1810/20.

The Mexican revolution in the 1820's focused upon Mexico City and the ports on the Gulf of Mexico. So too the various conflicts in the aftermath of the Mexican revolution.

Texas was not alone in resistance to the Dictator Santa Anna. He had to conquer and garrison multiple states in what is now northern Mexico. Early in the conflict Santa Anna offered to negotiate with the opposition leaders... He murdered them, this resulted in a number of "Yankees" being the surviving prominent leaders in Tejas/Texas.

Terrain, including thorny thickets, swamps, etc. resulted in the US Texas coast remaining somewhat different from the rest of Texas.

Is one, I can't remember the name of the other. Unfortunately, I have packed away most of my Louis L'Amour books.

The other L'Amour novel in that area was Lando, one of his Sackett family novels, I believe.

Most of my stories take place down the coat a few miles at South Padre Island and Port Isabel.
