"Someone finds an alien spaceship" stories

pangor 🚫

I have two of those in my current reading list:

Project: Prometheus by C.H. Darkstrider

Stargazer - Book 1 - Into the Stars by James Howlette

I know there is at least one other which I cannot find anymore (maybe I should post this in "Lost Stories?"), but I am generally interested in that kind of story, so if you've got recommendations, I'd like to hear them.

And, by the way, both stories I've got share one big problem: they post way to slow. I know, it's free and I should not complain, but why are authors spreading out such a story over years? I hope they don't balk when they read the amount of mail I've written to them about typos in their stories.

Spill the beans. There are some individuals here with a somewhat scary ability to recollect stories, so write out what you remember and let loose...

scary ability to recollect stories

Does anyone recall the story, I Won a Spaceship, by Harrison Park? It was here then gone too quickly. It is the reason I usually download a story after I read the first chapter if I want to read it all. It can't get away from me and I have a heck of a library.

Spill the beans.

OK, all I remember is that this guy, he retires early or just runs away from things, and start a new life in a remote place. He basically finds a space ship buried in his back yard, gets it to work and after a trip around, he comes back and recruits some humans to join him.

In dead tree or as an eBook: Mutineer's Moon by David Weber (Baen) and together with two sequels in Empire from the Ashes.

@pangor

It might not be exactly the kind of story you're looking for, but Ascension of the Alpha Male, and associated stories, by GoldenMage (https://storiesonline.net/a/GoldenMage) is based on the protagonist finding an alien spaceship.

@geeko

Thanks! The story I was looking for is "Blazing Star".

But I'll check and maybe bookmark the other ones, too.

@pangor

but why are authors spreading out such a story over years?

Because for some it takes literal years to write. The reasons for this are many, for some it's health, for some it's because it's a hobby, and like most hobbies, they are only done when time and funds are available, for some it's because they have day jobs they rely on to pay the bills, for some, they would rather spend time they could be writing with the family, etc etc..

@Pixy

I'm aware that it takes ages to write a good story, but I have my issues with stories that get posted as written. First, the author might start to write junk at some point just because he ran out of ideas in the middle of the story, or might just stop posting for whatever reason. Even if the reason is perfectly acceptable, this situation is not exactly good.

If it doesn't have to be alien, there's The New Emperor by Adam.F.

Both stories get pretty dark.

Giants in the Sandbox was one of the stories I started reading once. Thanks for the links. Apart from that, though, this was not the story I was actually looking for.

Dark is one way of putting it, i was reading Giants in the sandbox and didn't really read the tags and didn't realise the MC is a pedo

I didn't know that, I gave up on it before reading anything along those lines.

Devils advocate, but there is a certain irony to 'recommending' a story you couldn't finish.

I had this in mind as both stories fit the OP query. Posting the bit about 'Gets very dark' was a general warning without spoilers.
To be more specific, The Spark includes nuclear war, slavery and revenge killing. It also has a growth arc from self centered teenage loner to self centered powerful adulthood and finally love. It was interesting enough to hold my attention to the end.
Giants in the Sandbox, IIRC has viral near genocide of the human race and a sociopathic MC willing to torture and kill. At which point I bailed. It does contain a feline alien and her damaged sentient spaceship at the beginning.

Another one that's not here is Gina Marie Wylie's The Mission, with sequels, available on her BtFH site

My records show that it 'finished' with Chapter 33 but the current last chapter is 27. Is the author doing a rewrite or something?

I have my last chapter as 36 from before the rewrite (still unfinished).
He stated that he had rewritten the entire story but posting the updated chapters stopped almost 2 years ago at chapter 27.

Thanks. It's a very engrossing story so I hope the author manages to finish it.
