Moderators?

Eldof ๐Ÿšซ

Would it be possible to have someone/s moderating the forums? I only frequent the recommendations forum, so I can't speak of the state of the other sections, but the recommendations could do with some moderating. There are often threads that go off topic, and it would look cleaner and be easier to find story recs if someone deleted the off topic comments, and maybe deal out some bans after repeated infractions. To give you an example, what made me think of this was when I was reading the High Fantasy thread, and saw that user richardshagrin had pasted a Wikipedia article. Out of curiosity, I went through every thread on the first page of the recs section, and counted the same users posts. Out of their 14 contributions to the first page of the RECOMMENDATIONS section, only 2 posts were actual recommendations. The other twelve was weird comments (that almost everyone seem to just ignore anyway), or a reply to someone else going off topic. While this user isn't the only one making it more difficult to find actual recommendations (if you want an other example, just check the top post "Rags to riches" and you'll see the first response being someone telling the original poster to just search for the tag instead of responding with a recommendation. I'm sure the OP knew how to find stories with the tag, he was asking for recommendations from people who have read some within the theme and found them good enough to recommend, not for any random story that happens to be "rags to riches"), it would help the people making the threads looking for stuff to read if there was a moderator who could remove off topics and move discussions etc to the right subsections.

I'm sure the management can find a suitable moderator for the forums for whatever salary you send them to pay for the moderator. I know the current staff don't have the time to do any extra work like moderating forums.

I'm sure the OP knew how to find stories with the tag,

Not necessarily. Many readers of this site only have a basic, free membership, which severely limits their access. They may not have known how to do a tag search - I've seen that for a long time on here.

As for topics taking a left turn at Albuquerque or having the train of thought derailed, that's just part of the fun of this forum. Many of us who frequently comment on here are also authors of stories and novels, both on here and on other sites. Having a moderator come along and say, now, now, you're going off topic pretty much isn't in the nature of how this place works, lives, and breathes.

100%. This is the one and only site and forum I actively participate in and if the suggested moderation would enter I, and probably a bunch of others, would simply leave. It wouldn't be the same anymore.

Sometimes you've got to just row with the insanity. You mentioned bans, which I suspect is what you'd really like to see. To that I'd simply have to say, "lighten up Francis."

Short answer: no.

Longer answer:

Storiesonline (and other story sites) are place where creativity is celebrated. Having a big brother watching and tsk-tsking every time somebody steps out of the moderator's arbitrary comfort zone makes for a much less fun place and will eventually feel stifling and kills most of the activity.

I do some moderation to keep things civil, but I keep it to a minimum. And yes, we do have a blocking mechanism and when somebody proves to be an irredeemable ass, then they find themselves shouting into a blackhole.

And in another universe, far, far away, the natives hear the shouting and think they're listening to the voice of God. :-)

Ayep, and the universe is known as an Antifa meeting.

I suspect Ernest is closer to the mark. The most vitriolic discussions seem to be ignited by politics :-(

Which I am sure Lazeez has requested us all to avoid talking about, several times over the years- for that very reason.

Out of curiosity Lazeez, are the bans a set time or final? Or is it up to your discretion and the posting history of the individual? (asking for a friend, LOL)

Depends on the infraction. One person has been banned indefinitely. Others were banned for few days.

Under advice by consul I only have one comment. No comment.

@Eldof

You made a number of incorrect assumptions.

The Forum has a moderator, Lazeez, but his rules are not what you want. The majority of us who post in the Forum are happy with Lazeez's rules, and occasionally we will be upset by some of his decisions. Overall, he has done a very good job of letting us have a fun place to discuss topics and blow off steam.

Based on some of the threads I've seen started, not all of SOL members are fully conversant with the capabilities they have at their disposal. I know I am one of those people so I'm glad to be able to show my ignorance by making ignorant posts and getting answers that educate me.

I suggest that you adapt to the SOL environment or find a more restrictive social media platform that meets your need for structure.

Perhaps the local Home Owners' Association is looking for new members.
