Author Blocking - not absolute?

pj ๐Ÿšซ
Updated:

I got into a somewhat contentious discussion with an 'enthusiastic newby' writer and he suggested I just block him if I didnt like him.

Background: He asked a technical ? in Blog that should have been on the forum. I suggested Forum, he said no one answers him here. {Not True}

So I blocked him.

- Cuz I consider his stuff targeted to InCels and I dont get turned on by that

But while I dont see his blogging, I still see his story posts on the home page. Is that because I read the story?

I'm sure I missed something somewhere but why is that

The 'stream' on the home page is not affected by filtering. (Except those filters Laz places to deal with abuse, external links, etc.)

@joyR

Thx, Joy.
I DID figure out one obvious possibility.
Logged out and back in to see if filter prefs changed then.
Nope: Still see his listings not only on Home Page, but 'New Stories' 'Updates' and 'blogs'.

Short Response: Since you can't answer the point raised, why don't YOU consider not hitting 'Reply'?

Long Response: Since this was a technical question, and I only filled in my personal reasons for background. Why dont you reread YOUR response and think about it.
I know nothing about you but I've been 'on line' since the early eighties and am quite accustomed to 'Trolling'

- Here's more personal OBS. You and the guy I wanna block should get on fine! ;)

Author Exclusion Preferences is the way I block authors I don't want to see in lists. It works for me in the new story list, I don't use the update list and except for random story listing don't use the stream.

I assume you add this author's name to your Author Exclusion Preferences listing, if not that is probably why you see them in the new and update listings.

@REP

Of course he does appear on the exclusion list. Tried taking him off and excluding again.

I put two others on it long ago and as I recall it worked then.
So I guess it's not worth the hassle to block annoyances. I'm an engineer by training and mindset is the only reason I spent more than 10 minutes on it.

'My Stream' blocks him but lots of {most?} other postings as well.

@pj

The home page isn't filtered.

My stream shouldn't have anybody you block because it would be odd to put follow somebody and block them too.

The contents search can't be filtered so that isn't either.

Okay.. I get it. But where does it work?
Like I said if I hit New or Updated or blog lists he still shows.

remus2
Yeah I am. Like I said ... why did you reply?
At 76 I'm so crotchety that on Amazon Product Q&A, I'm pissed off by people who answer specific questions with
"I dont know" or "I haven't opened mine yet"

Ah,, whatever... I can live with it.

Okay.. I get it. But where does it work?

It works where the category exclusions work.

So go to the category exclusions and see what's checked:

New stories pages (New Stories)
Updated stories pages (Updates)
Category Search results pages (Category Search)
Search results pages (Advanced Search)
Random Stories Page
Rising Stars List (library)

If none are checked, then you have turned off filtering completely.

Thanks! Solved. Knew it had to be simple. Problem being I haven't touched that settings page in 10 years So I forgot about the listing selection. new and update weren't selected. Only had a few cat. excluded, like Pedo..

If I did see something I didn't like, I would just turn off my device And go fishing.

You'll note that Blog Entries (or Forum entries) are not in that list. They are not blocked. btw, nine times out of ten I consider this a "good thing".

Surely that results in extra wear on your tackle...? :)

@pj

LOL, my aren't we a sensitive one.

Easy answer is to simply ignore them. If it still gets to you, use the power button on your device and go fishing, hiking, or something along those lines.
