Scrolling through pages of information

REP ๐Ÿšซ

I would like to see a 'Go To Page' box on displays that require you to scroll through multiple pages of information to get to where you would like to be.

Assume there were 95 pages to scroll through and I wanted to get to page 83. All I would have to do is enter 83 in the box and the display would jump to that page. Otherwise, scrolling at 3 pages per click will take a long time.

On the page you get back from a 'Search' request at the top of the list of the first 10 stories are the page numbers 1 through to 7. On of the boxes with the number at the top has and up arrow and down arrow in it - on the first page it's the first box, but once you move along a few pages it usually moves to being the middle box number. If you use those up and down arrows you can cycle through to the page number you want, then you click the mouse at it jumps to that page. Also, you can highlight the number in that box with the arrows and type in the number of the page you want to go to, and then hit enter and it goes there. Thus it already does what you want in 2 ways.

Edit to add: I've noticed, and used, these same boxes on every story list I've seen on the site.

The only problem I've encountered with that is when you go over 999 pages it only displays the first 3 digits of the page number so 1000 to 1009 only displays as 100.

Lazeez, can you set that to display 4 digits with the arrows when required, please.

I had a similar need with the Category Search results.

It gave me the first 10 stories and I was able to jump ahead by clicking on number 7 at the bottom to get stories 61โ€“70. But the farthest I was able to jump ahead after that was 30 stories at a time.

It would have been nice to jump ahead and back by story number.

It would have been nice to jump ahead and back by story number.

I do that all the time by dividing by 10 then using the box with the arrows to use either the arrows or enter the number of the page I want to go to.

using the box with the arrows

I never saw that before.

If you get that many pages as a search result your search query is too generic. You would be better of by changing your search parameters to get closer to what you are really looking for.

I might want it to be generic. For example, I was looking at all stories from the inception of the site looking for the first date for a no sex story. Or I might want to search all stories from the beginning by a certain category and scroll until I find a story with a green dot (one that I hadn't read). I can keep track of the story number I left off and start there the next time.

Sometimes when you're specific you keep finding the same stories over and over again.

You need premium for this but with sorting and excluding codes you still might narrow down the results without losing the results you want. Searching is easy, to create a search query that returns exactly what you want is difficult, almost an art ;)

@Keet

Unless I search by descending date, I get the same results I got over the years. So I thought I'd start at the beginning and browse through all the stories by sorting by date in ascending sequence. The use of the green/gray dot makes it doable.

In navigation bars, if the possible pages are more than 7, then the current page number is in an editable box. If you change the number in the box and hit enter (or tap outside the box) then the page reloads and goes to the page you specified.

Some browsers don't show all the digits, but the box handles as many pages as it needs. It might not show all the digits because the way the browser may process it, but the digits are there.

the page reloads and goes to the page you specified.

I went to the Updates page and tried what you said. It didn't work as you described.

There were 159 pages and the scroll feature displayed selections for pages 1-7. I entered the page 4 selection, changed the value to 24, and pressed my Enter key. I received a message saying I had to enter a value between 1 and 16.

I tried again entering 16. The display changed to show selection of pages 10-16. I entered the 13 box and changed it to 24. I got a message that I had to enter a value between 1 and 16.

What you described may work elsewhere, but it doesn't work on the Update page.

@REP

I think you had 159 results, not pages. 159 results is spread over 16 pages.

Are you sure it was 159 pages, not 159 stories? at 159 stories, it's 16 pages.

Just out of curiosity, are the results of the search static or dynamic?

If I do a search that gets 50 pages of results and, while I'm scrolling through them, a new story is added that becomes the new story #10 and shifts all the other stories by one, is what I'm searching affected (dynamic) or not (static)?

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@Switch Blayde

Dynamic. If you go to the next page and a story was inserted as you viewed a page, then the results will advance.

REP ๐Ÿšซ

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

You and Keet are right. I read stories and thought pages.

I just looked at the updates page and this is what I see.

Displaying stories 1 through 10 of 162

That's no where near 159 pages.

REP ๐Ÿšซ

Thanks all. It is not apparent when looking at the display that the center box is editable, so I never tried to enter a page number.
