I'm sure this idea will generate a TON of polarized opinions, and not be a simple add...

I would love it if SOL could have tags assigned as both major and minor on stories. My thought is, while I use tags often to decide what to read and what to skip it would be really nice if they were broken out into which tags are central to the story and which are not.

I often see descriptions with things like "M/M only happens in one chapter and can be skipped". For me personally I would still try a story if my squick tags were clearly minor. Maybe the tags could be added separately when posting a story, but be combined in the list views for readers. Maybe just use a css class to change the text color of the tags in the lists?

This would also potentially help with allowing a larger list of tags that would be more manageable? Also, readers could potentially have a setting to hide "minor" tags.

You are right about that. Probably many of the same opinions expressed previously about tags.

One of the current problems, in my opinion, is authors not assigning tags appropriately (i.e., too many or too few or inappropriate). This idea would make that problem even worse.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. If I understand you, authors would not only have to select the appropriate tags, but would have to make a judgment call as to whether the tag is major or minor. That would create another point of dispute (i.e. someone saying an author should have made the tag a major tag.)

The bigger the list the more manageable it becomes sounds like an oxymoron to me. We already have a problem with some authors creating excessively long lists of tags for their stories. That is why Lazeez placed a limit on the number of tags an author can list.

If a reader sets display minor tags to OFF, then that could result in reader feedback complaints about the author not assigning appropriate tags. Yeah the reader set display minor tags to off so it is his fault he can't see the tags the author considered minor. The reader will probably counter that the specific tag should have been assigned as a major tag.

Overall, my opinion is your idea for an enhancement would cause a lot of problems for both authors and readers.
