Sounds similar to what I had some time back, where I read three separate responses (on FineStories), but when I exited the messages, it only listed one (and I could never recover those missing messages ever since).
There's some glitch in how the messages are kept/maintained/recorded.

if my memory serves me right, it was resolved my another author and they suggested the the posts be deleted, with the later ones being deleted before the OP can delete the initial post. There had been 3 posts in it the last time I saw it.

Replies must have been deleted. Somehow, I had missed the code that updates the thread's count when something got deleted. I fixed the issue.
