Up vote - Down vote

NC-Retired ๐Ÿšซ

In the comments section of the stories where the author has enabled comments, we have a thumbs up and thumbs down for the comment of some poster.

Can we get those up/down vote controls here in the forum?

I'd love to be able to react positively to some posting or comment without having to respond.

Conversely, I'd love to be able to disagree with a comment that is simply inane.

Doable or no?

Thanks

I think OP wants anonymity.

Aj...

You do that a lot. You try to think, but all you do is make wrong assumptions.

Why the F can't you take the words at face value rather than adding your inane comment?

That was a bit harsh, and, ironically, a bit inane. Had the system you wished existed, I would have given your comment a thumbs down.

So AJ was wrong, how were they to know that? I thought it was a fairly logical reply, and also one that I considered to be the reason (Having 'taken your words at face value'). It certainly didn't deserve the vitriol with which you responded.

Maybe your response was not written with the intention in which it's being received, or maybe it was ๐Ÿคท

Personally, I consider your response to be rather unnecessarily antagonistic. If you really don't like AJ, then either just ignore them, or block them.

That's what the thumbs down would be for. A way to express approval, thumbs up, or a way to express disapproval, thumbs down.

Since your hiatus, if you have been around these forums for the past year or so then you'll know that AJ frequently comes into a thread and sets up a straw man to knock down. Then when called on it he (seems to) go away and sulk, not responding to the criticism. Just as he has done in this thread.

Perhaps he has personal issues that keep him away, but when not criticized he seems to pop up frequently. So I do not know and neither does anyone else.

No, I will not ignore him or block him. in my not so humble opinion, he is the unnecessary antagonist.

Over time he's frequently been critical of many other posters in these various forums. Were I to characterize his behavior, it would be a high school bully.

But again, that's just my observation. You can go ahead and defend him if you'd like.

I have to admit to not noticing that. Maybe I will now that it's been pointed out (to me). I also admit to not knowing that I have been on 'hiatus'. Or maybe your definition as to the time required for a hiatus, differs from mine? ๐Ÿคท

I pop into the forums at least once a week, normally every few days. I don't always post when I do though.

Your own profile entry.

Which was written and posted over ten years ago, and I have posted 45 stories here since then.... So yeah, I really need to update that... ๐Ÿ˜‚

We should probably ask Laz to add post dates to profile entries...

An antagonistic, and imo undeserved, response.

Often in thumbs-up, thumbs-down response systems, you can just see a count of up/down votes, but not who voted. Such a system gives anonymity, and AJ seems to suspect the OP might want such a system; it would in effect be similar to voting for stories where people can see an overall figure, but cannot see who voted what.

For comments, we could have a different system, where readers could see the overall up/down vote summary, but by clicking further one could get a detailed breakdown. Or perhaps such a breakdown should only be available to those who had stuck their heads over the parapet and actually voted?

(Edited to correct a typo)

My post wasn't suggesting the feature already exists. I was simply agreeing with his request. I'd love a thumbs-up and maybe thumbs-down button instead of having to go find an emoji, copy it, and paste it.

Ditto, provided people could see who had stuck their thumbs up (or down, or briefly experimented with sideways).

When you click the reply bent arrow you get a box to type into. You also get choices at the top for a link, quote, etc. Maybe another choice could be added that would bring a drop down of emojis, like a thumbs-up and thumbs-down and maybe others.

My iPhone has that.

So instead of typing something like "I agree" or "ditto", all you have to do is choose a thumbs-up from the drop-down.

That's different than a count of thumbs-up and thumbs-down.

Up/down with an option to undo?

As a clumsy old fart, I have an unfortunate tendency to accidentally click on icons I didn't intend to (for example, because I meant to click the next icon over, or because I was really trying to scroll). In other places with up-vote/down-vote buttons, the only way to cancel an accidental down is to convert it to an up; there is no way to return to the neutral opinion.

They have on stackexchange where you can up/down vote comments, so it can be done. Do not know if it is easy or hard to add to this site. Stackexchange does have a member point system where you need a certain amount (quite low) to comment/vote.

Argon ๐Ÿšซ

@NC-Retired

Such a system would be counter productive. A forum is for discussion and exchange of ideas and lives from the presentation of arguments. Just thumbs up or down in response to a contribution does not really further meaningful exchange, does it?
Admittedly, many forum threads deteriorate after the first ten contributions or are hijacked for another topic, but they still resemble argumentation. Thumbs up or down does not.

If more posters just downvote a comment instead of flaming the poster, our discussions might be more civil. I don't know if this would happen, but I support any mechanism that might help.

This is why the system would be good, provided the u/d/g score is shown on the original post, not a new one - it removes the thread bloat from agree/disagree/whatever posts, without detracting from the topic.

Now that I'm thinking about it, the third option that would be frequently useful is some sort of a "GROAN" for the wordplay that certain posters indulge in. I often want to acknowledge a pun, but neither "Up" nor "Down" seems to be appropriate.

Our face to face RPG group has one inveterate punster. We have a couple of small sound effects things with, cheers, boos, crickets, rimshots, etc. Unfortunately it doesn't slow him down, but it lets us show our feelings.
